Wow, so far I took 500mg at bedtime for three nights. I was feeling good, and took 500 after lunch yesterday, and 500 after dinner. Guys, I haven't had a single tummy ache, or any nausea!!!! I've been watching the carbs as well. Also, taking it a good 20min after the meal seems to be helping. I'm on cd 24, so here's to hoping it helps me ovulate earlier next cycle or the next one.

I take 1500 mg and have ramped up slowly both times i've started it. 1 week at 500, 1 week at 1000, then 1500. I also take it at night right before bed (it's on my end table) so any side effects happen while i'm asleep. I used to get a bit nauseous but not anymore

Metformin also reduces the risk of miscarriage in people who have PCOS, so that's another reason to take it if you have it

Definitely start with one and work your way up. I can't believe they tried to start you on three at a time!

Also, try taking them with food and limiting your carbs/sugars. I felt much better when I took most carbs out of my diet when starting metformin.

I took one for a week, and then went to two. Once I felt ok on two (I was a little queasy at first) I went up to three.

If you aren't on the ER kind, look into it. It's extended release so it can be taken any time of day. I started with that and took it at night so I wouldn't feel as gross during the day.

I haven't gotten pregnant on metformin alone, but it definitely helped regulate my cycles.

@dc yoga bee: I did. I started with 1 then took 2 for awhile then when we wanted to ttc I started taking 3, then upped it to 4 and 4 made me really sick even after a few weeks. I think it's a good idea to take 1 for a week, then 2 then eventually try 3 again. Forgot to mention, this was all the extended release version. That is supposed to be easier to take.

@snarkybiochemist: I found that I could not take 4 pills a day without bad tummy troubles. 3 was completely fine but 4 was an emergency! My doctor said that is not unusual. I was taking 4 when I got pregnant this time but only 2 when I got pregnant with my son. They said 3-4 is considered a fertility dose so I upped it when I decided to try earlier this year.

I am taking metformin through my regular ob and am not having any success ovulating on it, so I'm off to an RE. I also only get stuck with stomach cramps and diarrhea in the middle of the night with no obvious pattern, which sucks. I have read that eating a diet that is low glycemic index helps.

The reproductive OB I was seeing uses metformin as a first line approach for PCOS and it worked amazingly for me. I conceived on my first full cycle on metformin after 12 unsuccessful months of TTC. I felt crappy for a few days when I first started, but then adjusted to it and actually felt great overall, more energetic etc!

A friend of mine was on metformin for non TTC reasons and went off of it to try and control her symptoms through lifestyle changes. When she went off of it they started NTNP. They NTNP with no success for almost a year. She went back on metformin for non-TTC reasons and the second month back on it she got pregnant.

When trying to get pregnant with J, I tried the Metformin alone for 4-5 months. At first it was rough, and I would get diarrhea pretty often, but then after 1-2 weeks, that went away. I had a different issue though, where I wouldn't ovulate at all, and the Metformin didn't help with that at all. But it might for you?

I was just commenting to say that if you stick with it for a little bit, the symptoms will subside, but it's getting to that point that's rough....

My midwives prescribed 1500mg Metformin for weak ovulation, and PCOS. I didn't have any cysts, just the weak ovulation, excessive hair, ovulation issues, etc... The RE said I was borderline, and the midwives said they would treat me as if I have it. My insulin levels are writhin the normal ranges. I previously ovulated on cd 17 of a 28 day cycle, and have been ovulating on cd 21 of a 28 day cycle. So, pregnancy was not a reset for me! I am 17 months postpartum, and DD weaned a few months ago. I tried the Metformin for a few days, but it made me so sick I couldn't take it and confidently do my 2hr commute! We are getting more serious about ttc, and I'm trying it again. Did you ovulate early while taking it? Also, anyone successfully get pregnant on Metformin alone?

@winter_wonder: I see you're pregnant! Congrats! May I ask if clomid worked for you or did you move on to other interventions?

@lauren0817: Thank you for the advice. I think we will move on in a few months if this combo doesn't work. Given my age and general good health, I've been reluctant to move on to the expense of an RE. However, it's getting to be that time. As far as tracking my cycles, I've never read TCOYF, but I'm familiar with the methodology. I can say with relative certainty that I don't ovulate on my own with regularity. The reason why is less clear.

@travellingbee: Thanks for reaching out! I know I've seen your journey before and I'm so happy y'all were successful. We had a chemical pregnancy almost exactly a year ago which was pretty devastating and started what probably has been the worst year of my life to date. But I'm glad to be starting back again. I have a consult with my OBGYN next week where we'll discuss our protocol. She has not mentioned monitoring to me, but I'm going to push for it. I need to be sure whether I ovulate or not on the clomid. Otherwise, what's the point. I figure I'll give that 2-3 months and then move on to an RE.

I also recommend seeing an RE sooner rather than later. Is your dr. Going to be monitoring you with ultrasound throughout your cycle? I think you get so much more information that way about how your body is responding to the medications. I was on clomid, HCG trigger and progesterone (but not for the same reason). I got pregnant the second cycle after trying this combo.

Also I tracked my cycles really closely and found out that I was ovulating on my own, but just sometimes very late. I read this book and used these cycle tracking methods - it was really helpful for me to figure out what was going on with my cycles : http://www.amazon.com/Taking-Charge-Fertility-Anniversary-Edition/dp/0060881909

I completely understand how overwhelming it can be at first! My advice would be to see a specialist (a reproductive endocrinologist) sooner rather than later if your treatment is not successful. I felt like I got so much more information and support once I started seeing my RE :) They will usually do a lot more testing than an Ob/Gyn to look into any other potential issues. I also have polycystic ovaries and did a few cycles of Clomid (all but the first also with IUIs) - I ovulated on Clomid, but didn't get pregnant. I ended up doing IVF and am now pregnant with our first :) Keep us updated on how your cycle is going!

@agold: Thanks so much for your concern and well wishes! It means a lot. Anxious is probably a better description for it, although sometimes I really am scared. I worry it won't work, I worry because I don't really know why I have cysts and why I don't ovulate regularly. I guess I'm just grateful that the overall prognosis appears to be relatively positive and that we have a lot of options left. I got really depressed earlier in the year about TTC (I had to be put on medicine) and I'm hoping to just stay positive this time.

I'm so sorry you are scared. I know that it is a scary thing. I don't have any experience with that exact combination of drugs. But I have taken estradiol and progesterone and, in fact, just finished a couple of weeks of those this morning. I haven't had any problems except maybe getting a little overly emotional a day or so after each estradiol shot. Good luck to you! :goodluck: You can do this! :goodluck:

Hi all!

My husband and I have decided to get back in the saddle TTC. We began our journey in January 2014 and have been trying on and off since. For the last six months we've been NTNP. He has no issues but I've got cystic ovaries. All bloodwork recently came back completely normal meaning I don't fit the PCOS profile- so my doctor (still with my obgyn) thinks I just don't ovulate on my own.

This cycle we're going on medicine for the first time - clomid, metformin, estradiol, and progesterone.

Any advice or success stories are welcome. I have to admit I'm pretty scared.

@LaughLines: I think it might depend on the person. I found out about a year and a half ago I had PCOS, and my dr put me on metformin (1,000mg) immediately. After a few months my cycles started to shorten, but they still weren't regular so we tried one cycle of progesterone.

I had the worst period I've EVER experienced that december, but then for nearly the next year, my cycles worked like clockwork. DH and I weren't exactly trying to conceive so I never took my dr up on Clomid.

I think it was about 5 months total between when I was diagnosed and when I was able to easily track my cycles with clear signals using temping and CM.

Good luck!

@LaughLines: doing met for 3m and then adding Clomid is the perfect recipe because the metformin takes awhile to build up (it's a build up in your body type of drug). So, by the time you get to Clomid, you will be primed and ready. Fx you don't even need it.

@LaughLines: I think it's highly unlikely it'll work that fast. It can take months for met to have the impact you're hoping for.

@pui: That's fantastic! I guess that's what i was hoping for with the low carb... which is why i waited longer to get more progesterone this cycle, i thought it would regulate itself with the low carb. Maybe that's another indicator the insulin issue isn't what's driving my long cycles.

@ShootingStar: I'm guessing everything that you (all) are saying is why the doc wanted to start with clomid first. I wanted to do the metformin because DH would still rather wait another couple months, so we were planning on doing Met for 3 months then adding clomid.

At least i know not to wait for another 120+ day cycle before going on clomid. If my cycle doesn't regulate with the Met in the first 40ish days i'll just assume that it isn't going to and not let it keep going so long.
