We weaned very slowly as well and I never had any engorgement afterwards. I didn't really test them out but my daughter did sporadically nurse a few times for a couple weeks after we no longer had any regular nursing sessions. One day I could just tell it was officially gone.

I never had engorgement or leaking. My breasts took about a month to stabilize in size (they are still bigger though). Six month after fully weaning my second, I can still hand express some milk.

We were down to just nursing at night before bed when my older daughter fully weaned. I didn't notice any engorgement or leaking until about a week later when I woke up with my whole shirt soaked in milk- it was like my boobs were like, oh ok we don't need this any more, bye! But I didn't realize that I was also pregnant at the time so possibly that was making me dry up as well.

I am with you on looking forward to not being home for every single bedtime soon, but not being ready to totally stop. I'm getting close- and I know my daughter will be ready, but she's my last baby so once she stops I'll never breastfeed again. :crying:

I didn't notice any remaining milk or engorgement when DD weaned. We also weaned slowly so by the time she weaned I was only nursing at night and I'm pretty sure I had minimal milk supply at that point.

I weaned when I was still doing a morning and bedtime feed. It was cold turkey at 13 months when I got pregnant and she had been at a sleepover and went to bed fine and woke up without asking to breastfeed (although she never asked anyway) so I figured I could do it. I never squeezed my boobs to see if any milk would come out. I tried not to touch them at all as they became a bit engorged and were hard for two weeks. It was uncomfortable, but not unbearable and not quite the same as being engorged when in the early days of breastfeeding. At the end of 3 weeks I noticed that they finally were more soft and I was more comfortable. I didn't know it would take that long, but I guess because I was still doing two feedings it made it a bit harder on my body.

I'm almost 3 weeks post our last feed (21 month old), and I currently have no milk on my right side (just some clear liquid if I squeeze), and my left side still has some shoot out if I squeeze. No lumps/bumps or engorgement but I didn't expect that I would have at this stage. I had been a little bit uncomfortable on my left side last week, but it could just be the milk that was in there, so I had expressed a little.

Just curious...

How long did it take for your milk to go away when you were done nursing? I'm curious especially about those who weaned slowly. We are about to give up our last nursing session this week.

I look forward to little things like sleeping on my stomach or not being solely responsible for bedtime (looking forward to my MOM meetings once a month that overlap with bedtime ...... of which I've only attended ONE since the twins were born!!!!!!). I know my mom has been dying to do a sleep over and this will let her have that joy. But I think I am really going to miss the sweetness and pure cuteness of them falling asleep forehead to forehead. So to distract myself, focusing on the curiosity of how long I'll still have milk up in there ;)

When did your milk supply regulate? Did it change all at once or gradually?

My pumping output dropped suddenly a week ago. I've been pumping since Day 1 (DS spent a week in the NICU after birth) and have always had fairly consistent outputs. I typically pump 3x a day while at work, pump for any other missed feedings when DS takes a bottle, and otherwise EBF. Since I started back at work in mid-Dec, I was pumping 450-700mL/day (about 15-23oz). Last week it suddenly dropped to 300-400mL/day (about 10-13.5oz).

I can't figure out whether this is a normal supply regulation or due to a combination of outside influences:
-DS started STTN more consistently (went from waking maybe once to not at all)
-I changed my diet slightly by cutting out most junk food. So I'm eating "better" and still eating often, but my overall calorie intake probably dropped.
-DS is getting over RSV. He started coughing the day before I noticed a change in supply, but was not very sick until several days later. At that time he had a very low appetite, but I was pumping a lot more to try to make up for it. His appetite seems to be back now.
-As of today, I seem to be catching a cold, probably from DS :(

Also, DS is 13 weeks and has always been <1% percentile for weight (I had to be induced early). At his sick baby ped visit, he had only gained 3 oz in 2 weeks (he was sick for a few days at that point, so let's say 3oz in 10 days). I'm always concerned he might not be getting what he needs to maintain weight gain.

Should I worry? Taking fenugreek and increasing the number of times I pump each day has not had any positive effect. I know EBF is the best way to create the optimal supply, but I obviously can't do that while working full-time. I would prefer not to call up the LC again because I had a bad experience with her attitude when DS was younger.

When you're baby doesn't sleep well at night and you end up with 4 hours of broken sleep for example, do you notice a decrease in your milk supply the next day? This happened to me last night and today I pumped less at work.

Seems like you are doing all the right things! The only thing that I did besides what you have listed is add a MOTN/Super-early morning pump. It was a little tricky to time it because I didn't know for sure when LO would wake up to nurse, and it was super painful to do because it was yet another wake up in addition to nursing LO. I would pump around 90 minutes after one of LO night wakings. For example if we nursed at 2am I would set my alarm to pump at 3:30am. This would get me another 4 ounces. My supply was pretty high in the wee hours of the morning.

I agree with @kiddosc about doing breats compression while pumping, and also trying power pumping is a good idea. Also when you pump at work, watch a video of your baby.

Also make sure to avoid mint and sage (in tea or food) as those will decrease your supply. You could try drinking a non alcoholic beer daily.

Another herb that can help is Goats Rue, you could try that instead of fenugreek. I have heard that eating quinoa helps some mom's with their supply.

Af returned for me at 4.5 months and my supply took a hit. I started taking fenugreek, mmt, extra water, sleeping earlier, power pumping sessions and took magnesium/calc supplements since my decrease was due to Af. I repeated the same every week Af was around until 13 months. And kept up to ebf ds. It got easier at 6, 9, 11 months as ds' intake decreased.

@junebugsmama: LO nurses 2-3 times a night. He goes to bed at 8pm, then nurses around 12,3, and 5. I used to do a dream feed at 10, but after many MANY nights realized this was very much disrupting LO's sleep and dropped it. I pump at 10 now instead.

@nicollette1189: Since LO is up 2-3 times anyway and I work full-time, I think getting up again to pump may kill me, LOL.

I have no experience with this since Im currently pregnant with my first but a friend of mine swears by fennel and basil essential oils. You mix a drop or two of each with some coconut oil and rub it on your breast, avoiding the nipple. Fennel you can only do 10 days at a time, then you have to take a few days off but basil you can do straight through. There are a few blogs on this if you care to google.

Can you add a MOTN pump instead of a dream feed so you wouldn't wake up baby? And I've heard of Fenugreek decreasing supply for some people, especially if you have thyroid/diabetes issues. Maybe try cutting that for a couple days to see what works?

@ms. pug: I don't think I would drop a session... I '3rd' pumping longer, I was able to increase supply by pumping for 26 minutes instead of 20, I get 'let down's roughly at 7, 12, 17 and 23 minutes.
When I went from 4 sessions down to 3 I was getting about a half ounce to an ounce less, which is why I don't think cutting a session would help.

Do you do compressions when you pump? There are some good youtube videos on how to do this. I'm at work now, so I can't look them up for you.

I would also power pump for a week for one of your evening pump sessions to try to increase output for that session. You pump for 10 minutes, rest for 10 minutes, pump for 10, etc... for an hour. This simulates a growth spurt and will help increase output for that session.

@ms. pug: I think you'll love it! Might take you a minute to get used to eating them cold instead of hot, but they're delish. Enjoy! :)
