@yellowbeach:  Thanks  :heart:

So at pre-op today the doctor (different from Monday) suggested to wait for my period. He said it's impossible to tell if its really retained tissue or just some sort of clot and the thing that would worry him is that the lining there is 21mm. But since I said I expect a period this weekend he said "oh, well that could explain it too" Since my bleeding has stopped he thinks that means I'm "clinically fine" and that ultrasounds can sometimes raise more questions than they answer. He said if it was his wife/daughter he wouldn't recommend doing the procedure. So I'm back to waiting for a period but this time feeling good about it.

@delight: thanks for sharing - its especially helpful to hear success stories after all this mess

Another update from me - I seem to be done bleeding. The bright red bleeding I had Monday morning was just small gush that stopped just as quickly as it started and the rest of Monday through now have been free of any blood. If I didn't have the ultrasound showing that there was tissue still I'd assume the miso worked and cleared everything out. I ended up scheduling a D&C for tomorrow with pre-op today so I'm curious what they'll say at today's appt.

I’m sorry you are going through this. I took misoprostal for a missed MC at 11 weeks. I ended up having to take 3 rounds for retained tissue. I was trying to avoid having a D&C because I had already had a D&E (TFMR) earlier that year. I ended up ovulating on day 40 after my first round of miso. I was pregnant with my son after 2 more cycles. Best wishes to you.

Ok, so there's still tissue. Dr offered a D&C but I asked if I could wait and see if a period cleared it out and she said yes. But on the way home I started second guessing myself and now I want to call back and see if I can get a D&C. I expect my period to show up this weekend or maybe Monday next week, so then it'd be another week or more probably after that before they could check if it's clear because of memorial day. And then I'd have to have a D&C if it isn't. Or I could just be done.

Ugh, well, nevermind. Bright red period-style bleeding started 10 minutes ago. I guess only time will tell if it stays heavy and is a real period. Actually it sounds a bit like what happened to you, @yellowbeach. *fingers crossed* its still a good sign even though it means my body is all over the place. Doctor appt is in 2 hrs so hopefully I know more then *shrug*

A quick update: towards the end of Friday I noticed that my spotting was actually quite a bit thicker and darker than usual and I passed lots of small pieces. The spotting tapered off significantly on Sat and yesterday was the first blood/spotting free day I’ve had in 7 weeks!!! So I’m optimistic that at today’s follow up I’ll get good news.

My temps have also been up all weekend so I think I did likely ovulate a week ago like I thought. That means AF should show this weekend and I can finally start TTC again. Fingers crossed my follow up confirms all this but for once I’m feeling really hopeful.

Not that I remember :-/ I have a follow up Monday so I'll see what she says. If I get proof that I ovulated this weekend then I might just wait and see what a period does. I've been charting and I had three high temps, but one was after a lot of alcohol, and one was a very restless night of sleep so I don't think they're solid enough to count.

@JennyPenny: I think the thought was that if it hadn't gotten infected in the initial 6 weeks, it didn't seem like a huge infection risk after that. I did have to have monthly ultrasounds during the 7 months to check it. Because mine was placental tissue that had blood flow, they were waiting for the blood flow to stop and the tissue to die off. I was told that I was going to need to stop breastfeeding if my period didn't come back because they were hoping my period might help push the tissue out. I did stop breastfeeding at 6 months and had my period shortly thereafter and sure enough 2 weeks after my period, it just sort of fell out (super gross, I know!).

ETA: If it didn't dislodge after I'd had 2-3 periods, we were going to discuss doing the surgery.

@Shantuck: wow 7 months!? I'm surprised they weren't worried about infection or anything like that. What was their timeline that they would have done the D&C if it didn't dislodge?

I took misoprostol for retained tissue six weeks postpartum. I actually had a bad experience with it but that was related to my condition. I had placenta acreta where the placenta had grown too deeply into the uterus during pregnancy and then broke apart at delivery. I didn't know I had retained tissue for the first 6 weeks after delivering my daughter and then one day starting bleeding heavily. The ob/gyn I saw gave me misoprostol, which ended up being terrible medical advise because the placental tissue I had in my uterus still had active blood flow (which they should have known if they had done a proper u/s). I ended up having really heavy bleeding and had to go to the ER and ultimately admitted to the women's hospital for monitoring. Anyway, my circumstances were unique and my issues appeared within 30 minutes to an hour after taking it. I didn't have any more cramping or bleeding after that initial round. For me, we ultimately took a wait and see approach and the remaining tissue exited on its own 7 months after giving birth. I then had to have a saline u/s to confirm it was all gone and make sure there wasn't any damage to the uterus. I was really lucky that things ended the way they did. I wasn't trying to conceive but my ob/gyn referred me to an RE for handling this condition since we wanted to be careful to not cause any scarring, etc. in the uterus. If the tissue didn't dislodge on its own, the plan was for the RE to perform a D&C type procedure that was guided with a camera rather than just a standard D&C. I hope you can avoid having a D&C and I'm sorry for all you have been through.

ETA: I actually started ovulating before all of my retained tissue had dislodged. However, I was told that I couldn't try to get pregnant until I got the all clear on the saline u/s.

@yellowbeach: hey, thanks for responding. I actually read your original posts when I was searching and they were very helpful. Back then you mentioned that you thought the bleeding that cleared things out was your period based on timing. I *think* I may have ovulated on Sunday or Monday this week, so that gives me hope that maybe if this doesn't work (which it seems not to be) that hopefully I'm only a week or so away from clearing out. I would really like to avoid another D&C if I can.

That said, I took the misoprostol last night before bed. Had lots of cramping starting about 30 min after and lasting through the night. When I woke up though I have no bleeding beyond what I have been seeing. I'm still a little bit crampy though so maybe it'll keep working over the day. *shrug*

I had retained products after my TFMR last year and tried miso twice. It didn’t do anything either time, so we were planning for another D&C when I started bleeding the day before and on ultrasound at the D&C appointment things had cleared on their own. Very odd.

@JennyPenny: Hi mama. Sorry to hear about the retained product, that must be so frustrating. Not answering your question exactly but I took Miso for two of my miscarriages and both times my cycle went back to normal pretty quickly. The bleeding/period that followed the was like the next regular one and my cycle was back on track after that. I hope its the same for you!

I had a TFMR 6 weeks ago and have been spotting every single day since. I finally went to the doctor today and I do have retained product. She prescribed misoprostol that I'll take tomorrow. I've been anxious for a cycle and ovulation so that I can start TTC again and I'm wondering how this will impact things. Does anyone have experience taking misoprostol for retained product and when they ovulated later? My HCG is already 0 and most of what I can find by searching are people who are taking it for the initial miscarriage.

Hey @LAZB, it's a me, Mario from March 2019 whattoexpect :P We had the same due date and we were posting pix of our FRERs. I lost my baby and updated your "out of tests" post for any googlers future reference. I looked you up to make sure your baby was still a-okay, but found this post. Your tests and levels were so good, I don't know what to think. I'm so sorry you're going through this loss. This is the first time I've miscarried far enough along that there was actually something to see. It's heartbreaking. when I found out your lost your little March 2019 baby, I just had to make an account to offer my condolences. Devastating news.. I hope the rest goes smoothly for you.
