@caitcat: yes!! They catch on so fast. :)

@karenbme: I forgot to add…a bath!!! Give her a daytime bath. You can sit by the tub and just chill and watch her play. Give her toys she doesn’t always get in the tub. Or a lollipop or a popsicle (minimal cleanup because it’s the tub!) — bonus points you can soak your own feet ;)

@togetherthroughlife: I did this often when I was pregnant with my second. I brought a some toys into our guest room and just let my daughter play while I rested. The room was pretty sparse and my daughter hardly spent time there before, so she thought it was novel/special to be in there...and it was easy to kid-proof and close us in. I rested while she played and babbled about whatever she was playing. She eventually sorted out that while we were in there, she would play more independently than when we were in other parts of the house.

I think a level of “guilt” (even though you didn’t use that strong a word here!) is very common when dealing with pregnancy symptoms and later on newborn days…all with a toddler who previously got all our love. I know I dealt with that! You said you’re worried that she’ll tell people at school you aren’t feeling well. Is there someone you could tell at the school that would keep it private? An adult who could know that if your daughter starts saying that, it’s definitely not about Covid? But in general I wouldn’t worry that a toddler’s hearsay would get you in trouble with Covid restrictions! I also don’t think it means you need to tell everyone before you’re ready. I think a happy medium could be found with just one trusted, professional adult!

I really struggled with being tired in that same window. After preschool pickup but before my husband got home from work to relieve me. TV didn’t keep my kid still. One day I woke up to him crying because he had opened the fridge, opened some hot sauce, and drank it. 🤦🏻‍♀️ I had fallen asleep on the couch. I think just creating a “yes environment” and then allowing yourself to rest is perfectly fine. Maybe you both go in her room with some toys, you lay on her bed, the door is closed to keep her safe, and then you allow yourself to just rest or sleep while she plays in that “yes environment?” Good luck!!

So we tried some TV time today, and even though she sat and watched Bluey, she is very much in a questions phase and I wound up needing to watch closely so that I could answer all the questions she had 🤦🏻‍♀️ Ultimately, I just have to accept that I’m not going to be able to be available 100% of the time, but it’s so hard when we only get a few hours together on weekdays..

@Lahela017: I haven’t tried Preggie Pops, but just ordered some from Amazon. Thanks for the rec.

@Chuckles: Thanks! We’re still not out of the woods, but it’s getting more real.

@winter_wonder: That’s an idea, too, there are three other families on our block with two year olds, but with the pandemic none of us have really connected or had play dates yet. I’m in the northeast where cases are high right now and I think we’re all just anxiously waiting for a vaccine.

I don't have tips for the sickness, but screen time or TV time would have been my suggestion too. Sometimes it's just about survival and if you need 30 minutes then letting her cuddle on you while she plays a game on an ipad or watches a show it'll be fine. The same applies for the 4th trimester :)

Re: her telling people at daycare, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Kids at that age say crazy things anyway, so I think the teachers probably don't put too much thought into their babblings about home. And even if they did it's none of their business to ask you...you could have a chronic illness or something else going on other than covid.

I’m so sorry, it’s awful! My first thought was tv too. Maybe you lie down and she gets to cuddle in a little nook behind your legs and watch a favorite show for 30 min while you close your eyes. Could be a helpful routine for 3rd tri exhaustion too.

I never had much that would help me feel better except time. And sleeping on the floor or couch while my kids played or had a show, even 20 minutes. I did find with my third heartburn was awful and making me sicker, but hopefully you don’t have that piece.

Kids are pretty oblivious so hopefully with a little distraction she won’t say anything. Or they might assume but wouldn’t ask.

Here’s hoping things start to improve, 8 weeks is such a hard time!

Ugh, sorry your dealing with being sick. It's even worse when you have to take care of a little one too. I'd let your kiddo watch some special TV while you get some down time between work and dinner. I'm currently pregnant and have a three year old. I've definitely let go of the screen time limits I had pre-pregnancy. I don't go too crazy, but some days I just really need the break, and that's ok.

Also, for the nausea, have you tried Preggie Pops? They are sour hard candy, and the only thing that worked for me. They only work while you are sucking on them, but it was a glorious 10-15 minute break from being sick.

I’m wondering if anyone has any advice on being pregnant while parenting a toddler and working full time. I’m 8 weeks along with number 2 and my morning sickness gets cumulatively worse all day. My two year old has started noticing (and crying about) the fact that I need to take 15-30 minutes to lie down most evenings between daycare pick up and dinner when my symptoms get bad. I try to graze and not let myself get too hungry, but most days I just feel exhausted and very sick by the end of my work day. Mint gum helps a little bit, but I have no luck with ginger tea or gum and carbonated beverages definitely make it worse for me. Any advice would be appreciated.

PS- I’m also a little bit worried that my daughter is going to tell people at daycare that I’m not feeling well, which given Covid restrictions could mean that we have to choose between telling before we’re ready and keeping DD home. If it comes down to it I’d tell, but since I’ve lost 4 pregnancies in the past I’d really rather wait.

I didn't take anything with DD1 & DD2. I didn't like taking anything (and do not like medicine or over the counter things in general). With DS, I had to, I couldn't function or work starting 7 weeks. Doctor suggested Unisom and B6. I took it until 21 weeks when I started finally feeling better. I would do it again if needed.

I have good days and bad days, with exercise, eating better, and staying superrrr busy helping so I think I will hold off on the Diclegis. The possibility of sleepiness (literally the ONLY pregnancy symptom I don't have  ) makes it not worth it.

@Mrs. Deer: I'm glad to hear about your positive experience with Diclegis compared to Zofran. I took Zofran during my first pregnancy, but I don't want to take it again. My OB is going to be out of town for a bit and she called me in some phenergen in case my nausea gets awful like last time, but I looked it up and I think it's a category C drug so I won't be filling it.

@pachamama: My doctor prescribed it without hesitation. It's calassified as category A in pregnancy, which is excellent. It's very safe. However, it makes me very drowsy and gives me a very dry mouth, even if I drink tons of water. I've switched to only taking it before bed to avoid feeling these side effects. It really does help with the nausea, though, so it's very worth you giving it a try.

I took it every day until the day I went into labor! My OB said it is totally safe so no need to suffer. I found in the first tri it helped, but wasn't a miracle worker. It did make me tired at the beginning, but I was tired anyway. I got used to it though. My insurance paid for it, I think a month's supply was $30.

I took Zofran with my first two pregnancies and did not want to do that again this time around. I was skeptical that Diclegis would work, but it was truly awesome. I think it worked better than the Zofran with less side effects. I took it until I think I was about 28 or 30 weeks. Started with taking two pills in the evening, one in the morning, and one in the afternoon… But was able to slowly drop down as the weeks went on.

@pachamama: I was like you, didn't take anything with my first. For me I had a love/hate relationship with diclegis. I was constantly trying to decide which was the more debilitating: being nauseous all the time or being exhausted to the point of falling asleep. Even though I took it at night, it always seemed to knock me out in the middle of the day when I was at work. My body never seemed to acclimate to the effects.

I'm pretty sure my reactionwas atypical, and I do believe it's perfectly safe.

I called the nurse line, and they called in a prescription for me, no problems. I paid $40 for 120 pills and had no problem with insurance approving it. I'm still on one pill at night at 16 weeks. I probably puked on average once per day even with diclegis for most of first tri and felt pretty blah, but it would have been much worse I think without it. I'm so glad for the people here who encouraged me to get on it fairly early, even though I could have held off a bit longer.

It did make me tired, but it's also hard to separate how much was diclegis and how much was normal first tri exhaustion. I think eventually my body got used to it, and it didn't really make me tired. I weaned my dose from 2 (1 in afternoon, 1 at night) to 1 this week and have noticed I've had more trouble sleeping since then, but am hoping I'll get used to having less of it within a week or so.

I took it from 5+5 until 19+2. My nausea started shortly after my positive test and was only getting worse, I never threw up but food didn't sound good and I just felt awful. It did make me tired in the beginning and so I only ever took the lowest dose, 1 pill at night. My RE prescribed it without issue but my insurance took over 2 weeks to approve it, thank goodness for free samples. Good luck mama

DW was on the max dose of diclegsis until literally the day our son was born! Her midwife didn't hesitate as she was so ill...nearly had to go to the hospital for fluids a couple times. It did make her drowsy at first so she took it at night and figured out other times during the day that weren't as bad (I'm not sure) but she got used to it I believe.

Seeing her so sick, I would not hesitate to take it for yourself. It's extremely common and safe to take. It's not worth it to suffer IMO when there is something that could help and has no adverse effects.

I'm not doing well this pregnancy with my nausea and with an 18month old it's not fair to anyone. I have nausea from 2 minutes after I wake up, strong waves of it all day until I go to bed. Not throwing up but I just can't function. I'm extremely nervous to take anything while pregnant, never took so much as one Tylenol with #1 but I'm desperate.

Did Diclegis make you drowsy? Did you Dr prescribe it without hesitation? Anything else I should know?

Update: my symptoms are totally back/worse! I guess I asked for it. Have been insanely exhausted and lots of queasiness. It hits me suddenly out of no where and eventually passes after a bit of deep breathing. Not fun though and definitely starting to make work a bit less bearable! But in the end, hoping it's all a sign pointing to good things ahead.

@ShootingStar: My tests are all positive although from what I understand taking a pregnancy test after getting a bfp isn't a great idea since hcg levels can still be high even after mc. So I don't believe that's recommended. However I have taken more tests because I'm crazy and they're always positive

@Goldengirl: I felt the same way, but I ended up just enjoying it, and truthfully I had such an easy pregnancy, it was wonderful! I'm one of the annoying people that "loved being pregnant"
