Heightened awareness of feminist and gender equality issues, especially in the context of working parents and the rights of women to maintain their careers and financial self-sufficiency.

Honestly, before I had a child I would have rolled my eyes at the notion that it's important to have a female president for any reason other than diversity / role models. Now I see how even my reasonably feminist husband (who does a majority of our housework and pitches in on childcare) still doesn't get certain aspects of inequality. I want moms to run governments. They will make better decisions based on the experience of being a mom.

I'm sure this is biased, but nothing throws a spotlight on your priorities like being a mom.

My sleep schedule for sure... I used to be up till around 11 every night, now I crash closer to 9:30 even on a weekend. And 7 am is sleeping in, where as I used to sleep till like 10 am on on weekend! Now that would be such a wasted morning.

Being a mom has made me a better step mom also, which I'm very thankful for. I also appreciate my step-daughter so much more because she is such a big help with DS and with chores. She's a great big sister.

I also am sooo much more emotional about childhood illnesses or accidents. All are so heartbreaking because I can now put myself in the parent's shoes and it's so hard to think about.

I was just thinking about this while driving to work this morning, that I used to LOVE summer. I love the heat, all the things I can do/enjoy, etc. But that's pre-kid. Now, don't get me wrong.. I still love summer! But it's a lot of more work too. If she's gonna play with water, then I gotta pack all the pool/beach gear; constantly making sure she has sunscreen... And it's extra exhausting being out & about in the heat.

I'm finding myself to start loving fall more. There are seriously festivals every weekend; pumpkin/apple picking; and it's not hot & not cold which makes it great weather to have outings! I never thought I'd break up with summer, haha!

Similar to you, the meal planning and cooking. I have to know what we are eating every day! I used to just throw together whatever or whine and order pizza (not that that doesn't still happen occasionally!)

Also sleeping in so late on weekends and being a night owl. Now 10:30 is a late night and sleeping in is 8 am even if I do get to sleep in. I'm still slow to fully wake up but mornings are so fun with him that I can't believe I missed half the day by sleeping before!

Budgeting for expenses and buying things on sale or with coupons just weren't things I thought about much. Now daycare is like a second mortgage and I'm so pleased to get a good deal or second hand bargain :silly:

After becoming a mother, was there something about you that changed completely, that you wouldn't have believed it 5 or 10 years ago?

I used to love to go out and eat, and HATED cooking. Cooking and cleaning up afterwards was a waste of time and I just didn't see the point. I did it out of necessity and I would eat out on weekends for sure. We always cook ahead of time and just reheat the food on weekdays. The things we cook are mostly pasta and not much veggie or protein.

Now with DS, and we needed to be more mindful about budgets. For some reason, I really really love cooking and eating at home 7 days a week. I didn't even mind that I have to pick DS up early, and go home and cook from scratch every night! We also eat so healthy with a ton of vegetables and protein. I thought I was eating the healthiest foods when I was pregnant, but no, we are the healthiest now. This is something I wouldn't have believed it (and still couldn't believe) 5 years ago.

You? Any natural changes after motherhood?

***Update***
Most of N's testing came back normal. However this morning we got his celiac genetic panel back and two out three markers were positive. The genetic panel by itself is not grounds for celiac dx but coupled with all his problems the GI feels comfortable saying he has Celiac. We still have a scope coming up and we will know the extent of his intestinal damage. We will also get to know if he is showing signs for crohns.

@MrsRcCar: I hate to hear N has to go through this! Some tips on the scopes (E has had 4 done in her lifetime) is to make sure to have a stuffed animal/blanket (security item) with you for them to take back with them. Our hospital doesn't allow us to go back with them, so this helped keep her calm. Have a sippy cup of their favorite drink ready when he gets out of it, his mouth will be very dry. I bought a new special one that had a favorite character on it as a added bonus. Emme HATES the IV and usually when coming out of anesthesia she immediately tries to pull it out, they have it all wrapped up with a hard thing around her hand and she will use that as a weapon in her drugged state. Be careful of that, I just hold her hand and soothe her the best I can! We also brought a portable DVD player so she can watch her favorite movie while waiting. The scope itself is very short, but the wait before and after can be a drag for a 2 1/2 year old :)

Fwiw i had an upper endoscopy done and the procedure itself was ~10 minutes. I was in and out of there from start to finish in ~45 mins. They spent a lot of time going through questions with me then they sedated me and then of course after the procedure they had to make sure I was ok before discharging me. It was outpatient. Of course I'm an adult though so it will be longer with a LO but just wanted to share my own personal experience and say it wasn't bad at all and I totally freaked myself out over it before the procedure. No side effects of any kind afterwards either. Good luck! Be strong. You can do it mama!

@hellobeeboston: The genetic testing will show markers for celiac without gluten. I was concerned they would want him back on gluten for normal testing but she agreed that it was unnecessary given his past history. She said when he gets older we could explore a gluten challenge if needed. I am hoping his testing goes alright. He doesn't do great waking up from surgery. My mum or Dad will be with me when he gets scoped, because DH will be unavailable due to work and school commitments. I am hoping we all sleep well tonight.

Today we met with GI at the children's hospital for N. Overall it was a wonderful visit. His GI doctor is a wonderful lady. We discussed all of his issues and my concerns. She looked over N and said that overall he looks very healthy (largely due to fact that I am diligent with his diet), but said she understood my concerns.
She ordered celiac genetic testing, stool studies (can I just say YUCK), Upper/ Lower scope, and something about testing for acid reflux. They will be calling tomorrow to schedule the scopes.

We did go ahead and get the labs drawn for the Celiac genetics test. It was AWFUL! He had to be stuck twice. The first stick there was no flash of blood and he just screamed and begged to be done. The second stick was fast and at least it was only one tube of blood. I guess I got pale, the lab person kept asking if I was ok. :meh: We should get the results in about a week.

Is it bed time yet? This momma is exhausted.

Great advice! I feel like I read so many books and articles while pregnant and it just doesn't make sense anymore to do things because a book said I should, or a bunch of people on the internet believe in it. Some things just felt natural to me and some things I thought I'd never do I did out of desperation.
