@hummusgirl: Left hanging - hahahahha I feel the same! Can they wait outside while I finish the movie?? When DS was very traumatized and he was sitting outside of the theater sobbing, I attempted to lure him back saying, I promise you, he will find his parents and everything will always turn out OK with a happy ending. Do you want to go back and find out? HAHAHAHA. and of course he said no :silly: And yes, I wish I can find $1 theaters....! not that we could use it anytime soon...

Speaking of which, DS also watched part of Frozen when we were on a plane. I forgot what happened but I don't think he finished it. He liked it and wasn't scared. I attempted to watch Inside Out with him on another plane trip but he got bored and wanted to watch something else when we were at about 1/4 of the movie. Too bad because that is certainly a lot less "scary" than Dory....

@yellowbird: good for you! I watched the trailer and saw one dog hitting the other and decided OK this is probably classified as "too scary" in DS's books so we went to Finding Dory instead. Hahaha.

@lamariniere: I wasn't worried, I just felt bad.... and a bit bummed. Going to the movies can be such a fun thing to do with your children, but I guess we won't be able to enjoy that until months/years later....

I wouldn't be too worried about it. My son is 5.5 and has never been to the movies. He is extremely sensitive to movies/animation and there are very few things he can watch without being scared (even shows that are completely not scary, like Bubble Guppies).

This summer, I took DS1 (3.5) for the first time to see Finding Dory. We left with about a quarter of the movie to go because he started saying loudly to me, "GO HOME!" No crying though. Later he said he liked it but it was "super long." He just didn't have the attention span. He didn't care that he didn't find out how it ended, but I feel like I'm still left hanging haha.

I think we'll try watching more movies before we attempt the theater again (or maybe I'll seek out a dollar theater next time). He usually gets about 20 mins of screen time a day and it's a variety - Paw Patrol, Daniel Tiger, random videos about whatever we happen to be talking about (how to plant basil, where wolves live, how maple syrup is made, etc. - lots of times he asks a question I don't know the answer to, we YouTube it). The only other movie he's seen was Frozen a few weeks ago at his grandma's house. I watched it with him and he liked it - was not too violent or scary, and seemed a lot less emotional than Finding Dory.

Thanks for sharing!

@Freckles: You are totally right!

@abbydabbydoodlebug: "Baby Day" is interesting. Wish we have it here...

@autumnlove: Ahh. That's a very good tip. I should have read the book with him first! But honestly I think it may not make a big difference for us. About a year ago I got tickets to watch a Pinocchio puppet show. The story is quite complicated so in order to make sure he understands, I hunt down the golden books and read with him which he liked the story. Then I showed him a clip from the Disney movie. He freaked out with Pinocchio's nose growing. (But he was fine with the actual puppet show, thank God) Same thing with Three Little Pigs he thought the short film from Disney was the scariest thing ever. So in a way I was prepared for what happened but I thought he might have gotten better after a year...!

@looch: @catomd00: Actually a friend of mine has taken her son (DS's best buddy and their birthdays are only 5 days apart) to Finding Dory. She said it was the best experience, the movie was wonderful, her son was not scared at all, and said DS would probably love it too. And that was weeks ago. My neighbor's DS, also same age as DS, also watched Finding Dory with his class as a field trip. I had weeks to expose DS to Finding Nemo, and he was excited to go to the cinema. I also watched several trailers of several movies, and decided Dory would have been the least scariest of all....

@hitchhiker: DS also doesn't get a ton of screen time too! Usually 2x5 minute videos a day... and occasional short films. Recently we did let him watch a bit more TV, like the Olympics, or football (college football season started, DH is a fanatic and wanted to introduce him to the sport). Nothing like a full featured movie yet though.

LO1 was 5 and LO2 was 2.5 years old. I took advantage of summer $1 movies at Regals and watched the Curious George movie. Both kids have seen Curious George with my oldest having seen the movie before on Netflix. Both kids were eager and anxious at first but hated it! They said the movie was too scary, and we left after half an hour or so.

I've noticed that Disney movies are too scary for my oldest. We try to watch some of the classics together, and we rarely get through the whole thing. For regular screen time we stick with PBS shows. It's more educational, fun, and innocent.

My son had just turned 4 when he saw his first movie in theaters - also Finding Dory. We stayed until the end, but about 3/4 of the way in, he started asking when the movie was going to be over. I don't think he really got the story, so he was probably bored towards the end. He kept getting out of his chair and asking for more popcorn. He's been watching a lot of movies at home lately since I was suffering morning sickness, so he's seen Finding Nemo and some other Pixar ones like Toy Story. I think your son's reaction is totally normal - when my son is watching a movie at home, he bolts out of the room when a scary part comes on. You don't really have that option in the theater!

I was very sensitive as a child and scared of many movies. I figured my son would be the same but nope! He's 3.5 and been to 4 movies-Peanuts movie, Good Dinosaur, Finding Dory, and a Little Mermaid sequel that was playing at a resort. He doesn't get scared and watches the whole thing. He watches about half hour of tv per day but no iPad or anything. Occasionally a movie on the weekends.

I recently took my 3.5 year old to see Finding Dory. She liked it, but she was primarily focused on the popcorn. Honestly, I expected more of a reaction like you got, because she can be sensitive and I hadn't done anything to prepare her because it was a last minute decision (friends had free tickets). I remember my sister reacting like that to most movies when we were kids.

She doesn't get much screen time at home (15 minutes a few times a week) and the only movie she has seen is The Sound of Music (in short increments--that movie is really long!).

Haven't taken mine yet but sounds like a very normal reaction for a young child. I think it's a good idea to watch movies first before showing them to kiddos that young, especially if they're sensitive to somewhat scary content.

My kids liked all of their movie experiences so far. Peanuts, Zootopia and Finding Dory. They were almost 4 and 2.5 at their first movie. They were very familiar with the Zootopia and Dory storylines because we read the books (Big Golden Books) a lot before we went.

I have friends with 5 & 6 year olds that couldn't sit through Dory. I think it just depends on the kid.

-When did your LO watch his /her first movie in the cinema?
We went this summer as a family.
-How old was your LO at the time?
DD was 2.5
- What movie did you watch?
We saw Finding Dory also!
-What was his/her reaction? Did he/she like it or hate it?
She seemed like she liked it at first (and has talked positively about it a bunch since then), but she also got scared in the middle and had to leave.
-Was there any crying?
Yes she got scared by something in the middle of the movie and freaked out.
-Were you able to stay till the end or did you have to leave in the middle of the movie?
DH left with her in the middle.
-How much screen time do you usually have on a daily basis and what do you watch usually?
We usually do an hourish a day or sometimes watch a movie. DD likes Sofia the First, DocMcStuffins, and most Disney movies. She loved Finding Nemo, so I was a little surprised that she got so scared at Dory- maybe because it's a bigger screen and louder?? We probably won't go again for a year since she seems to like movies much better when we rent them for our house.

When did your LO watch his /her first movie in the cinema? We went this summer to "baby day" at Alamo drafthouse.
-How old was your LO at the time? 2.5yo
- What movie did you watch? We watched Finding Dory too.
-What was his/her reaction? Did he/she like it or hate it? She really loved it! The only scary part for her was the chasing scene with the squid. She really doesn't like scenes with peril.
-Was there any crying? No.
-Were you able to stay till the end or did you have to leave in the middle of the movie? Stayed through the whole movie! Minus a potty break near the end.
-How much screen time do you usually have on a daily basis and what do you watch usually? Usually 30 min a day. We have movie nights 1-2 times a week.

Eta: "Baby day" is when they turn the sound down a little and the lights are raised up. But to me, it didn't look or feel any different than normal. She was so excited about popcorn and the big chair. I don't think I'd take her to see another one until another disney one comes out. I've read that Secret life of Pets has a lot of chase scenes which my DD does not like. I've been telling her that if anything scares her in a movie or tv show to just cover her eyes and that seems to help with those scenes.

Don't feel too bad. I still think for some kids, 4 is too young to go to the theatre. It's a different experience- dark, loud, huge screen to make it too real. My DD is same age and went to see Secret Life of Pets with her class and was terrified and cried most of the time. She does better watching movies on a smaller screen...in a well lit room. ;)

I don't feel bad when I hear about 2-3 year olds going to the theatre. Every kid is different!

Reason I asked is, we took DS (4.5 years old) to his first movie, Finding Dory, at the cinema today. It was nice cinema seating with gigantic reclining chairs. But he was TRAUMATIZED and cried. I had to have him sit on me in the middle of the movie. The second time he started crying was when Dory found the bunch of "Dories" and they said her parents are gone, and Dory went back into the ocean. DS cried like his parents died and said he wanted to go home. So we walked out and he was very traumatized, and said the movie was very scary. When asked if he was scared he'd get lost too, he said no, he just thought the movie was very Dory. Ahhh. And I wouldn't be able to find out what happened in the end until a few months later when the DVDs come out! :( The thing is before this movie, he watched Finding Nemo (well, first half of it) at the dentist and he said he loved it, and he didn't find it scary, and he would like to watch Finding Dory.

Tell me about your experience...

So far she's only seen a handful of movies so it's not really come up, though watching movies from my own childhood as an adult in often shocked by how emotionally turbulent kids movies can be! My parents heavily monitored what I watched for a very very long time and DH's didn't monitor at all. I don't think I'll be quite as strict as my own parents but I definitely see DH and I running into issues down the road as he doesn't understand why anyone would tell their kids what they can and can't watch.

@caterw: Randomly, a couple weeks after we saw Snow White, my LO announced to my husband "daddy, I don't ever want to have a step mother". I could not stop laughing. Damn straight little lady.

Like others, I had no idea that Frozen was PG, so I guess she's been watching them since around age 2. She's almost 3 now and we are fairly loose with it (recently, she has watched Zootopia and Shrek, which are probably both a little mature for her, but she liked them). Ironically, the movies I don't like for her to watch are some of the classic Disney ones that actually are rated G (Bambi and Alice in Wonderland come to mind).

We haven't taken her to a theater though, so we just watch movies at home and if she gets bothered by a scene, I turn it off. So far, that works for us.

@ValentineMommy: exactly this. If something bothers me, I turn it off and find an alternative thing to do or movie to watch. Anything we need to have a chat about, we do. I honestly don't have the time or energy to screen everything we watch, and they're not going to be shielded from this stuff forever. I'd rather talk about why something was bad or not ok to do or say, etc, than police her minimal exposure.

@caterw: I never realized how scary it was until I watched it again with her. Also, she loves Little Mermaid but we have to fast forward through the Ursula parts.

@mrsjazz: Anastasia is SO SCARY! My 2.5 year old got completely freaked out by it and had nightmares about Rasputin for days.

We use our best judgement before letting DD watch anything and keep her fears in mind. She tends to get really freaked out by evil stepmothers for some reason (Tangled scared the poo out of her), so we will be skipping Snow White and Sleeping Beauty. Scary animals don't seem to bug her so Finding Nemo / Dory were absolutely fine for her. She has snuck into my room to watch Harry Potter when I had it on for me, so I will allow her to stay and fast-forward through the parts I think are too grown up for her.

Like @mrsjazz: since about age 2 (he is 3 now). They are usually movies we have already seen so that we can make a judgement call on whether we will let LO watch them beforehand. I think I'd be okay with most PG movies, as long as I have seen them first and feel like he would be okay with it.

She's been watching them since she was 2. Frozen used to be her favorite. She just saw Finding Dory and The Secret Life of Pets. Cars is G rated and she loved it. Anastasia is G and we had to stop watching because she got scared.

We are not strict about ratings. We are probably way more lax about this than others. Hell, we watch Cleveland Brown together and that's not for kids.

I must be in the minority, but my 3.5 year old has been watching PG movies since....forever? I really don't see much of a difference between G and PG movies. And if something brings up a topic that we need to discuss, then we discuss it with him. But, that's never happened yet.

I will say, most of the time we've seen the movie before he has, but not 100% of the time.

@T.H.O.U.: This is something we struggle with. My husband watched horror movies from a young age, so he thinks H should be able to as well. I absolutely don't agree, have put my foot down, and we've had many fights about what is appropriate for our kids.

She's seen Frozen in its entirety, and has seen parts of Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Minions, and probably a few others from school. I don't mind showing her Disney movies at this age (2.5) but we generally don't let her watch movies at home. The majority of what she sees is Paw Patrol and The Andy Griffith Show.
