@owlmom: if you are going to a regional children's hospital, ask to speak to child life and they'll make an appointment with you and your toddler to talk about it and maybe make a medical doll who goes through an MRI as a rehersal for the real thing.

@BananaPancakes: I scheduled an MRI for my 3yo this morning too :( We're also hopefully ruling out tumor, epilepsy, etc. I hope your little guy's MRI goes well and that everything is okay with him!

Aside from the restrictions on eating and drinking ahead of time, I'm at a complete loss as to how to prepare her for anesthesia. Anyone have any tips for how to talk about it with a 3 year old? @Mrs. Jacks: Do you happen to know of any resources I should check?

@LML: @LuLu Mom: He'll be close to 3 years. So he knows what's going on. He's such a tough kid, though, so I'm hoping it'll be a smooth process that won't be too awful for him. And thanks for all the tips!

@Danizaur: I was wondering how long it would take. I was guessing the MRI was less than half an hour. Thanks for sharing!

@regberadaisy: I don't know if you recall our whole vomiting/diahrrea nightmare last year, but they treated him for parasites even though we couldn't find any in his stool. Well it showed back up a few weeks ago and because his vomiting is solely at night in a similar pattern, his specialist wants to rule out worst case scenerios (aka tumors or epilepsy) with an MRI. Still praying it's just a parasite we can't seem to identify, which means we can't effectivtly treat.

T had one at 5.5 months. The sedation risks they go over really scared me, so I worried the whole time, but he didn't have any complications. They sedated him using Propofol. They let him fall asleep in our arms first and then administered it through his IV port (he was hospitalized at the time). They said it would burn but he would be out before he noticed it. He jerked his hand and then went back to sleep. Luckily they only gave him a small amount just to keep him asleep. It went well.

We didn't get to see him until he woke up. He woke up groggy but pretty happy. Hospitals are terrible for napping and he was needing that deep sleep badly! Lol

The whole process from sedation to him waking up was just 45 minutes.

My LO hasn't had an MRI specifically, but she's had several test where she's had to be sedated. How old will he be? The younger the easier, it's gotten harder as she's gotten older (she hates having her IV wrapped up and freaks out when she comes out of sedation because of it.) Otherwise she handles it very well, the no drinking is our biggest battle, I would try to get the earliest scan as possible. We always do right in the morning, so we take her to the hospital in her PJs (no diaper change even) and hope she falls back asleep for the 45 minute drive there.

Also, bring snacks/drink/his sippy cup for after (but hid it until he's back in the room and able to have it)

Bring his lovey, favorite stuffed animal, favorite movie/ipad ect, anything to keep him calm and feeling comfortable, they let her take it back with her.

We've used the same anesthesiologist for almost all of hers (she's been under 4 times now at 2 1/2) so we trust him and they actually take her from us awake and bring us back awake (sleepy but awake.) This is way easier on me so she doesn't seem me stress out and cry (I cry every time they take her.) This is the hospital policy, not sure if that's how it is everywhere.

How old is your LO? My DD had one at around 6 months and it went fine. The only thing that was difficult was not being able to feed her for a certain number of hours beforehand. I was really scared about the sedation but she did fine. And she was so young that she wasn't scared or confused or anything. She just rolled with it. If you are nervous you might try calling and talking with the anesthesiologist who will be doing it. That's what I did and it did make me feel a lot better about the whole thing. He talked me through the process and reassured me quite a bit.

Sorry for the delay. Update is: I don't have a tumor! That is great news. My doctor does not want to restest my blood for high prolactin levels, and is chalking it up to, um, excessive nipple stimulation courtesy of DH! I actually wonder if doing the blood test right after I ovulated, with all its BD, contributed.

I know that many REs will retest the blood, but at $200 per test I'm not sure it is worth fighting my doctor over retesting.

Hi--Forgot to reply to this. I have high prolactin levels (30s-50s) but was ovulating, albeit not terribly strongly (like a 12 progesterone level on 7 dpo). Unfortunately, I didn't find out about the levels until I was in the middle of an IVF cycle. I am now pregnant, but I will definitely do an MRI after I have the baby to see what's going on in there. Good luck!

I didn't have high prolactin, but I did have high TSH indicating Hypothyroidism. This was the first suspect for why I don't ovulate, but it turns out it was completely unrelated (My cycles/ovulation didn't start up after it was managed). This could be the case for you too, but I would definitely take the steps to treat this in case it does help.

I was diagnosed with a pituitary tumor years ago. At first I was very upset, but it has not been a huge issue. I have no idea what my prolactin was at the time, but I do know that it was elevated and I was not ovulating. My tumor is very small and not anything to worry about on a day to day basis.

The biggest issues with pituitary tumors is that they can sometimes grow during pregnancy and in extreme cases press on the optical nerve, which causes vision problems. My doctor thinks mine is small enough that this should not be an issue. I get an MRI every other year to check on mine, but I know it was especially important to have a baseline MRI right before we started TTC so they could gauge whether it might be a problem during pregnancy. Obviously you cannot get an MRI while you are pregnant.

I'm really surprised that you ovulate, but that is great. I did not for a long time. My tumor was controlled by cabergoline when I was not TTC because it works the best. It is currently controlled by bromocriptine because it is safe if you become pregnant. Bromocriptine has finally brought me to a normal prolactin level, but it required several months and a lot of dosage increases to get there. I don't know if this is what has caused me trouble getting pregnant, or if it is something else, or a combination.

Good luck with your results and with TTC! Be sure to give us an update!

I dealt with slightly elevated Prolactin levels. I think mine was around 28 (my dr. said normal was between 1 and 23?). My progesterone 7dpo was around 8, so I was ovulating, but just barely. My doctor wanted to bring my Prolactin levels down and see if that would naturally make my ovulating stronger and my progesterone levels higher.

Since my Prolactin levels were barely elevated, I did not go for an MRI, although my doctor said that was very common and he might have me do that later if medicine didn't bring down my levels. I went on Bromocriptine (generic Parlodel) for a couple months and my levels were normal the next time I went for tests. It turns out, though, that though high Prolactin was an issue for me, it was not keeping me from getting pregnant. I ended up going on Clomid and we eventually did IVF. I kept getting my Prolactin checked, though, and my levels went up and down a lot. I ended up getting back on Bromocriptine for my IVF cycle and just stopped it when I reached 12 weeks.

In addition to stress elevating levels, you can get a much elevated result if you've had any nipple stimulation in the day or so before the bloodwork. My RE even told me to not let the shower directly hit my nipples and be gently toweling off after my shower the morning of my test. Just wanted to let you know in case your dr. didn't mention that.

I really hope your MRI comes back conclusive one way or another so you can move forward with treating your high Prolactin levels and get on with the baby making!

I had a hormone panel come back with elevated prolactin several months before I became pregnant. I was not TTC at the time, but my midwife was trying to figure out why I had long, but regular, cycles.

In my research I found that the levels can vary a lot, so I would maybe ask to be retested before you have to go through an MRI?

My prolactin was normal on the second test, and my doctor determined that I must just have naturally long cycles. I was pregnant within less than a year of that elevated test.

@lokki: I didn't have this problem but my BFF did. Her prolactin levels were through the roof. She had a pituitary tumor, took meds for it and was able to ovulate in 2 months. She wasn't lactating either, which the doctors were amazed at bc of her extremely high levels. I want to say hers was 120+?

Hi everyone,
My doctor ordered a hormone panel since DH and I have been TTC without success, and she was concerned since my prolactin levels came back elevated (69).

The good news was that we determined via the blood panel I did in fact ovulate (which I expected), but she kept asking if I was having nipple discharge since elevated prolactin can cause you to secrete breast milk. Even more troubling, she sent me for an MRI suspecting a pituitary tumour.

Has anyone else dealt with this? Part of me is really worried that I might have a tumour, though most pituitary tumours seems to be beneign. I have seen online that something like 20% of the population has these.

Yet it seems odd I am ovulating, my periods are super regular, and I haven't had any discharge.

If the MRI comes back inconclusive I will make her do another blood panel since stress can elevate levels (and I definately had a lot of stress going on with work when I did the panel).

I guess I am just looking for experiences of those who had similar issues.
