Oh yes, my almost 3 year old is the same. I’m only allowed to sing sometimes. In the car is usually a “mommy don’t sing!” although once in a while I’ll get him to sing along to something. I will say he’s a great little singer when he wants to sing. he doesn’t mind it when i sing in our music class or at bedtime. As soon as I’m done singing to his lullabies I get “go, leave!” :silly:

Is it possible he just doesn’t like ‘kiddy song’? Like if you play a beautiful lyrical song would he appreciate it? My little niece was snobby about music and only enjoyed really high quality stuff.

My son likes the radio/songs with words BUT I have started to get “noooooo don’t sing mommy!” A fair amount these days. I remind him to ask nicely and sometimes with oblige him and sometimes I will tell him that I am going to sing anyway. I refuse to let him dictate everything all the time, so I sig sometimes even though it would be easier to stop so he wouldn’t scream at me. But I want to sing and sometimes living with other people means you lose sometimes, toddler. :silly:

Our son loves to sing. Like sings all the time when he’s happy and relaxed and playing. DH also loves to sing, but gets in trouble ALL.THE.TIME from DS for singing. And he prefers to talk in the car but will occasionally tolerate the radio and sometimes likes to pick CDs from the library. He’s almost 4.

My DS is a little like this. He loves listening to music and singing. But other people are only allowed to sign requests (made by him) and occasionally sing along to the radio. We are, under no circumstances allowed to spontaneously break into song or sing along with just him. Preschoolers are strange creatures... :silly:

ETA. And yep, just like @Littlebit7:, I am NOT allowed to whistle or hum a tune. lol

My daughter is the same way. She will randomly sing songs she has apparently picked up at pre k, but hates it when DH or I try to sing with her. She only sings spontaneously. She doesn’t like the radio. However she does like jingles on some commercials and is obsessed with “singing in the rain” so we watch the movie clip sometimes on YouTube and she occasionally sings (the gene Kelly version, so weird). Toddlers are bizarre creatures. Oh and she hates it when I whistle and I’m a habitual Whistler who has no idea she is whistling.

So for the longest time I just thought DS hated the radio or me singing in the car. I mean, he's fine with me singing him lullabies or nonsense songs (lalalalala type thing), so it must just be in the car.

Nope, he doesn't like me singing outside of bedtime or turning on Pandora at home while I work. It is a little funny to watch him tell me "SHHHHH" everytime I sing a little phrase.

But he is just fine with instrumental music. Anyone else have a kids like this? What music do you listen to? Will I ever be able to train him to sing Wheels on the Bus with me?

Thanks for all the tips! I think buying a cheap CD player and checking out the CD selection at our local library is probably what I'll do. But even CDs seem to be going to the way of the dinosaurs. My laptop doesn't even have a CD drive anymore. It's crazy to think about how quickly technology has advanced, and yet I don't think it's always for the better!

We have my old iPod that we filled with classical music that we have connected to a very old iPod speaker. It was one that I had gotten for free from somewhere...but it's not any specific brand name. So we have a super old generation iPod hooked up to it that shuffles the songs and plays pretty much all night for LO2.

Ooh good question! I'm following. I fell asleep to stories on tape for years and loved them (I was 9-13) at the time though. LOTR, folk tales, fairy tales, etc.

The cd stories make sense. You could buy on iTunes and burn to cds if iTunes sells stories on cds. Libraries have them to borrow too usually.

My libraries have lots of kids' music CDs and books on CD. My son and I regularly check out children's and other music CDs for the car (he's currently on a Beatles kick thanks to Beat Bugs in Netflix). Just a quick search on Amazon provides tons of CD players under $25. Would that be an option?

OK, help me out mamas... when I was a kid my mom had an inexpensive cassette player in my room and every night she'd play a tape for me as I fell asleep. The tapes were just songs and books on tape that she'd check out from the local library. What is today's equivalent of that??? Technology was supposed to make life easier, but I don't feel like sticking the expensive Bose wireless player in my son's room and monkeying around with trying to find audio tracks on Spotify or iTunes. I'm nostalgic for the days when you could just pop in a tape and hit play. I'd love any suggestions for a simple nighttime music/audio routine! Anyone? :)

Ours is "To Love Somebody" by the Bee Gees. My husband played and sang it for me on our first Valentine's Day (and has played it every Valentine's Day since), and he even surprised me by serenading me with it at our wedding.
