I know a few people with double names but they all dropped use of the second by high school. Seems like a PITA for forms, especially on computers.

I love them and agree with @Happygal: about the second name being masculine/family. I wanted to go with Mary DH's first name for our daughter, but didn't because we agreed on a different name.
I am from the South and see this a lot.

I love them and my daughter has one. She's named after both sets of grandmas and goes by both names. That being said double names confuse people and I am constantly correcting people or people are annoyed because she won't answer to her first name. For whatever reason a few people I've met are really really anti-double names.

I like them. They are common in the south and can suggest a certain prestige, although that association is totally old school! DW is from Georgia and has a double first name. It's pretty but I will warn you - people are irrationally confused when they first meet her. It gets old!

I'm from the south and like double names, personally. But it think you have to find one that you like the first name on it's own, as well as the double. That seems like a good compromise to me.

There are some that I like, so at some point I was googling about it, and found lots of people complaining online about their double name because it can cause confusion - i.e. random bureaucrat gets confused that the double name is a first and middle name and so then the name on your passport ends up not actually matching your legal name, name on the airplane ticket, etc, and it's a huge pain to get random bureaucrat to change it...

@Torchwood: I'm from the South and live in the South. I think that's why he likes them, because he's accustomed to them. And he only seems to like the short first name, long second name variety (like, Anna Katherine, for example) but no further shortening.

But as to two different names, it's a good compromise suggestion, but I couldn't handle it. I don't even generally like nicknames, period! I like very simple, traditional names. I think he's going to have to give this one up.

It's pretty common here in the south. It can come across as pretty redneck with some names, but usually I like them. I occasionally call LO Lily Rae but I try not to do it in front of people because I don't want them to think that's something we want her to be called.

Could you just pick a name that works as a double and he can call her both and you call her one? My cousin calls her daughter (Amelia) Milly, and her husband usually calls her Amy. (Except I think the spell Amy weird.)

I grew up with people who had a double first name and a middle name as well, which made filling out forms complicated. But I think using a middle name as a second name could be cute. Although I feel like it works better with one syllable second names... I.e. Emma Kate, Sarah Jane, Mary Lou, etc...

I don't remember meeting someone with a double name as a kid living in California. In the south, however, it's much more popular and it has grown on me! I've met women who have a masculine/family name as the second name and love that.

My parents gave me a double name e.g. Anna Jane Lastname and wanted me to be known as Anna Jane (not my actual name). I've hated it since as long as I could remember. I don't like the way double names sound (very "country" IMO regardless of the actual names) and it was always such a pain. People always asked, is it one name or two, is it hyphenated, do you have a middle name, etc. I always just wanted a normal single name like everyone else. Finally, around 6th grade, I simply started calling myself just Anna and as an adult I have totally dropped the second name. My family still calls me Anna Jane and it makes me cringe.

@2PeasinaPod: I don't consider Maryann a double name either. It would be a true separate two names. It would be both the first and middle name, we'd just call the child by both.

@T.H.O.U.: I agree with you on the option. They could always drop the double aspect later. The only double name I've said I could be okay with is 4 syllables. Our last name is one syllable, so we actually need a longer given/first name to make it work.

ETA: and the one we're considering is a family name.

My husband and I found out we're having a baby girl and I'm thrilled, but we're definitely having difficulties on the name front. My husband is absolutely obsessed with double names (e.g., Anna Katherine, Mary Katherine, Sarah Elizabeth, etc. - although none of these are actually in contention). What are your thoughts? I don't hate all of them, but I prefer single names. And he can't seem to come up with one single name except for parts of double names I've already vetoed.
