Hello! My son is 7 months old. He sleeps through the night for the most part (teething has been waking him up but he comforts himself back to sleep). He falls asleep easily on his own for bedtime.
Naps however are another struggle. He takes two naps usually, morning and afternoon. Morning nap is about an hour, sometimes in his crib. However, afternoon nap he will not sleep unless he is nursing. He will sleep for 2+ hours as long as he can nurse. I take him off once he's sleeping but he will wake halfway through and want to be back on.
My question is, how do I get him to nap in his crib and stay asleep for longer than 20 min? I know that I created a habit of nursing to nap, ?75 with him able to sleep at night on his own i know that he is capable. I'm not opposed to cry it out, I just want to make sure I am doing it right. I'll be back to work when he is 12 months so I have a few months to sort this out.
He will also nap well in the car or stroller.
Thanks for your help ladies!!!

@BlueWolverine: Or maybe she's not as worn out by me as she is by the other little kiddos entertaining her all day at the sitter's! Such a good point, though.

@looch: This doesn't help our DD yet. I think she's still too young or something, because she just gets distracted by me. Ha!

@snowjewelz: I agree. My LO naps like a champ at home (at least 4 hours per day) but at daycare only 1-3 30 min naps!

We had this problem. I couldn't get LO to nap reliably until 15 months. I asked her pediatrician about it and her pediatrician had the same issue with her kids. We survived. For the past year we've had consistent 2 hour naps. Like PP, the nap is an hour or two later than at daycare.

I loved it when my son was napping on the weekends, I can't tell you how many cat naps I took myself. I solved the problem of my son's bad naps by laying down with him, which eventually meant that we were not doing too many errands or fun things, but I figured if he was sleeping, he needed it.

At 2.5, LO almost always takes a later nap on weekends. At day care, they put her down from 12-2, but on weekends, we usually do more like 1:30-3:30 or so. Maybe she just needs more time to get sleepy after being excited about being home with you.

At that age, my LO wasn't napping regularly at home OR at daycare, so we usually just had her nap on the go in the stroller or carseat. In fact, we often planned errands or trips around when we wanted her to take a quick nap in the car. It it helps to know, things eventually settled down (maybe closer to 10 months) and she got better at sleeping on a schedule. As a toddler, she started sleeping less at daycare and then making up the time on weekends, so these days, her naps are way longer on weekends! Baby sleep is crazy.

@mfa_lady: I have to say life got easier for me once I tried to stop forcing things. There are definitely times that we get a grump baby but we go with the flow. There have been plenty of times we sit in the car waiting for one to wake up or cut dinner short because a melt down is about to occur.

My kid napped like a champ at daycare and would not nap more than 45 minutes a stretch at home unless husband or I held her. So we just held her. Somewhere around 9-10 months she stretched out to 2 naps and had no issue sleeping in the crib (though admittedly we rocked her to sleep for naps). She's now 2 and naps perfectly fine on her own. I always figured naps won't last forever so it wasn't a big deal to do whatever we needed to do for naps.

@Mamasig: We are SO fortunate (crossing all the things, knocking on all the wood) that she sleeps well at night, and I think it's time to just be grateful for that and give up on the nap schedule on the weekends. Ha! That would make things a lot easier for me. And what's the worst that can happen? We're out somewhere and she gets grumpy? At this point, that kind of seems better than not going anywhere because she should be napping but won't anyway. :)

@mfa_lady: Do what works for you! My kids aren't the best sleepers but they sure can fall asleep in a car! I only have the weekends to do errands and fun stuff with them so we're always out somewhere. A benefit is that they can sleep anywhere - it doesn't have to be at home in their crib.

@Truth Bombs: good tip! I have, but it doesn't work. She pays way more attention to us than she does to the sitter (who puts her down in a pack and play in her living room, lol) and if we're around she wants to be all up on us and NOT in her bed or PnP. Boo!! We duplicate her nighttime routine for weekend naps and that doesn't help either.

Since being in a nanny share at 8 months our LO has almost never napped on the weekends with us, ha. When she did nap it was kind of a long process and ultimately one of us would just fall asleep with her. At age 3, she naps every day for 2 hours with her nanny and takes 0 naps on the weekends. We don't try anymore.

WOHMs--talk to me about weekend naps!

Our LO naps like a champ at her sitter's house during the week--usually two 1.5-2 hour naps daily. (She's 7 months old.) On the weekends, though, we're lucky if we get two 45-minute naps out of her. We put her in her crib and she screams and screams. If she DOES go to sleep, she always wakes after that first sleep cycle. We try to stay home at least through her first nap, before we start running errands/being out and about. Any tips for making her weekend naps consistent and not totally crappy? Would nap training just for the weekend even work?

Night sleep is not affected by her naps at this time, so we just really need help with the naps!

I don't know if I would call it a "success story" because it was hard, but I was able to extend naps by watching the video monitor like a hawk. Like clockwork she would start stirring at the 40 minute mark (I think - I can't remember anymore but it was always the same amount of time) and I would sneak in her room, scoop her up before she was fully awake, and rock her back to sleep. Once she was 100% asleep I could lay her back down. This would usually get me another 45 minutes and a happier baby, but it was time consuming!

Obviously this was not nap training, as nap training teaches them to fall asleep / back asleep on their own. We have sleep trained at night successfully but even at 16 months I have to rock my LO to sleep for naps. Every time we tried nap training was a 100% disaster. But when we switched to a 2 nap schedule, they naturally lengthened and she actually became a great napper for the most part.

She also napped really well in the car - always has and still does - and so some days we would just go for a drive just for everyone's sanity. Hang in there!

As for falling asleep on her own - DS used to as well up until he was about 2-2.5 months old. Once he started becoming more alert and aware of the world around him, he really started to need our assistance to help him calm down and fall asleep. Maybe your LO is experiencing something similar.

I feel you pain. We have a similar issue. I know that DS will grow out of it eventually but I really feel like I'm spending my entire day trying to fight him to sleep.

Have you tried letting her nap in a baby carrier/sling? I sometimes take DS out in ours in the middle of the day and he'll fall asleep after maybe 30 minutes or so. Or sometimes I'll put him in it, rock him to sleep in the house and just do a couple chores or eat lunch while he snoozes.

It's just a nice way to alleviate the constant must-make-baby-nap pressure, even if he doesn't sleep for much longer than usual in the carrier.

@Mrs.Someone: I think I might play around with awake time this week, thank you for the advice!

@Charm54: the strange thing is... she's always fallen asleep on her own. We would wrap her and feed her as a newborn and put her down awake. I think I just need to relax and help her through it, it's hard though.

Ironically enough she's been napping for an hour and 20 minutes this morning. Although I think it's because she got immunizations yesterday and they seem to make her sleepy.

Honestly, the only thing that worked for us was time. She would only take 30-40 min naps for me until we trained her to fall asleep on her own at 7 months. Then they started getting a bit longer every time we dropped a nap. Now at 18 months she takes one 1.5-2 hour nap a day. I would not have thought that possible this time last year! She STTN great, just took shitty naps and didn't seemed to be too tired in the day so at least I didn't have to worry about that.
