@JJ2626: so sorry, I meant to reply to this and forgot and now I saw it again and it reminded me.

You know, the only thing I did that made him sleep later was drop to two naps 🤷🏻‍♀️ Then sleeping till 7/7:30 just fell into place.
Looking at your schedule, one easy thing I can think of is maybe to just not go in till 7am. Is she happy when she wakes at 6/6:30 or does she cry for you? If she’s happy I might just leave her till 7 then make a big exciting production at 7am. Sometimes they just wake when they wake because we go get them and they become conditioned to wake at that time.

The other possibility is to reduce wake time between naps. At this age the max they can prob do between 1st and 2nd nap is about 3 hours. But sometimes they can only do 2 hours. I would try to do nap at 1pm and then see how that works for a few days and tweak if necessary. So it would look like this:

7am Bottle (I know our LOs are similar in that they aren’t crazy about bottles, but if yours is ravenous in the AM this might not work. And remember they’ll be dropping bottles in like1-2 months!)
8am Yogurt
8:30am - 10/10:30 Nap
11am Bottle
12pm Lunch
1-3pm Nap
3pm Bottle
4:30pm Dinner
6pm Bottle and bed (even my “meh” bottle drinker will drink his bedtime bottle after eating dinner, it’s the easiest one...and again, bottles will start to go away soon anyway).

That is how mine started to sleep till 7/7:30. I think if you start to structure his naps and feedings where you want them to be, the rest will fall into place.
And I have to say, a 6pm bedtime with 7am wakeup is GLORIOUS. 😂

@natalie403: same as @JJ2626: at 9 months we did mostly purées with some finger foods here and there (mostly me being lazy because, 2nd kid). Now at 10.5 months I’m making an effort to do more finger foods, but if I’m having a bad day or things are rushed I’ll totally do a pouch. Or I’ll do protein finger food (fish or chicken or meatball) and then a pouch of veggies or something.
Today for breakfast was toast with a very thin layer of PB cut into little squares. And blackberries cut into quarters.
Lunch was random - edamame, cantaloupe and a piece of croissant haha.
Tonight for dinner he’ll try salmon and I made rice pilaf last night that he loved so I’ll give that leftover. And probably edamame or peas again.

Good things to start with if you’re still not doing finger foods are peas (frozen ones, steam in bag are great) because they are small and mushy. And easy to pick up since they don’t stick to the highchair. And scrambled eggs (as long as you have no reason to suspect allergy) - also very soft and can be made sort of like an omelette and cut into small cubes).
Shredded cheese.
Blueberries cut into halves or even quarters if you’re nervous.
Of course puffs are good for practicing pincer grasp.
Oh watermelon is good too. A little messy but easy to grab since it’s not slippery and easy to chew without teeth.
Canned beans are great too - same thing, mushy and easy to grab. Very nutritious. Just rinse them in water first.

And there are lots of things you can do that aren’t really super solid but lots of texture (you’d feed on a spoon). Like mild chili or even just ground beef that is seasoned. Rice. Cous cous. Quinoa.

And if you really feel ambitious (I kid, it’s an easy recipe but again, I’m lazy), there is a great recipe I got from HB for quinoa broccoli cheese bites. I make a batch in mini muffin tins and have them in the freezer for a few weeks. Just nuke 1-2 and it’s perfect portion.

@natalie403: We do mostly finger foods now. Eggs, Cheerios, banana, beans, rice, potato, avocado are her faves. And yogurt. But at 9 months she did more purées and then we just kind of noticed she wanted more finger foods.

@LadyDi: Thanks for sharing! It sounds like ours are similiar! This is helpful!! :)

@SweetiePie: This schedule sounds great! I find he takes better naps at home but probably because less noise from the other kids etc. What do you do for solids? Do you do finger foods yet??

@JJ2626: Ok that amount makes me feel better! I couldn't figure out if it wasn't enough (I know they say food before 1 is just for fun but he LOVES food... and isn't as interested in as much bottles) I have his 9m appt tomorrow so I guess I can run it by them too! Do you do purees or finger foods now?

Four 7 ounce bottles sounds normal to me. At our 9 month appt the ped said it’s normal for intake to drop around now. My LO is 10.5 mos but has been on 2 naps since about 9 months. She eats about 20-24 oz of formula per day (has never been a huge eater). Her schedule is:

6:00/6:15am wakeup
— @SweetiePie: any tips to get her to wake up a bit later? Sometimes it’s 6:30 but I can’t figure out what makes it happen!
6:30: 5oz bottle
8am: yogurt
8:45-10:15 nap
10:30: 4-5 oz bottle
11:00: solids
1:30: 3 oz bottle (sometimes)
2-3:15 nap
3:15: 5oz bottle, solids snack
5:30: solids
6:30: 6 oz bottle and right to sleep (asleep by 6:45/7 and sleeps through the night)

ETA: When we started transitioning to 2 naps, we basically gave her 2 naps if she woke from her 2nd nap after 2pm. If she woke before 2pm, we gave her a catnap around 4/4:30. That worked and then eventually her 2nd nap started getting later.

My son is 10.5mo but he only dropped to 2 naps maybe 3 weeks ago? So we’re probably on the same trajectory. He was very late to drop his third nap. He was waking at 5:30-6am for so long but we never got him till 7am. But we still had to put him down for his first nap by 8am LATEST because he was such a mess. And it was this vicious cycle. I knew he was waking early because he was getting too much daytime sleep. But I couldn’t figure out how to get him all the way till 6 or 7pm bedtime when his first two naps ended by 1pm. He finally had a morning he slept till almost 7am so I just went for it.
Right now he does this:
7am wakeup (honestly it’s sometimes 7:30 now which is amazing) and bottle
8am breakfast
9-10:30/11am nap
11am bottle
12pm lunch
1-3pm nap
3pm bottle
4:30/5pm dinner
5:30 bath
6pm bottle and right to bed

So he’s now sleeping 6pm-7am
Napping 8-10:30/11 and 1-3pm

It’s so wonderful and my only regret is not trying to transition to 2 naps sooner!

My son is 10 months but his schedule hasn’t changed much. He dropped to 2 naps around 7 months. Typically, wakes around 7, haha 6-8 oz bottle, breakfast around 8, naps at 930, 6oz bottle when he wakes, lunch around noon, nap around 2, 6 oz bottle when he wakes, dinner around 6, 6 oz bottle before bed between 7:30-8.

Hi mamas!
Just wondering if anyone could share their infants schedule? I think my 9m old is condensing naps down to 2 and it’s affecting his eating schedule and I can’t for the life of me remember how my 3yo was at this age. He does solids 3x day and 7oz bottles. I find when his naps are longer he only takes 4 instead of 5 bottles but seems ok so wondering if I just up to 8oz??
He sleeps from around 7p til 5:30/6:30a and has bottle when he wakes. Then solids around 8:30 followed by nap (anywhere from 1-2 hrs), another bottle then solids around noon time then nap around 1ish for an hour then bottle then dinner around 5:30ush then bottle before bed by 7. He’s up to the stage 3 solids and does puffs well. Just would love to see how other infants schedules are at this stage..

Thanks so much

@DesertDreams88: Yes! She is 6 months old - I totally forgot to put that in my post. See ... sleep deprived

@starchild: We are definitely doing night sleep training as well as working on the schedule. Its a lot all at once!

Thanks everyone - I was leaning towards working on the nap timing first before "nap training" so I'm glad that sounds like the consensus on what makes sense!

I see from your profile that LO is 6 months? I think 2 naps is understandable at that age.

We prioritized a regular schedule first before sleep training. I felt that if her body got used to sleeping at certain times, then it would make sleep training smoother. I didn't want to be faced with a situation in which LO was screaming his head off for 20+ minutes bc I was trying to get him to sleep at a time that wasn't natural/habitual yet to him.

Sleep train at night first, it's easier because their sleep drive is stronger. Naps do after that. Highly recommend Precious Little Sleep (book, blog, podcasts, facebook group). And just be aware that for some babies, checks make it worse. I'd start with that approach and hope for the best, but if it doesn't seem to working after a while, maybe tweak a little and cut them back. Good luck!

Ok, so I have decided the time has come to get LO3 on a schedule and sleep train her.

For background LO1 was naturally a terrible sleeper that puked with any sleep training that included pretty much any length of crying so he was up 5+ times per night until he weaned at 16 months old.

LO2 was a magical unicorn who STTN and had herself on a great nap routine by 4 weeks old and each sleep regression we just dropped a nap.

LO3 did great until 4 months. Nap schedule was pretty all over the place because, well, 3rd baby. Now she is struggling more. Wanting to be rocked down, sleep is all over the place etc.

I want to get her on a 2 nap, 3/2/1 schedule. It should work well for my morning trips to drop off kids, go to the gym, do pickups etc. I also need to sleep train her because she wants to be rocked to sleep 24/7.

Which would you tackle first? The schedule and rock her if need be to make those 2 naps happen properly, OR the sleep training (we are most comfortable with controlled crying with checks/re-assuring every 5 minutes).

Hello!

We just started sleep training our 10 month old this week. Sleep trained our older son - he was quick to catch on and slept 7pm-7am after 4 days of training him to sleep. This little guy has been a much tougher sleeper since day one, and seems to be stubborn to the core when it comes to this sleep training. He sleeps 2 naps per day, about 1-1.5 hour each. We’re very happy that we’ve worked him up past 40 minute naps and sometimes we even get lucky enough for a 2 hour nap. If he’s had two short naps, we give him an extra nap in the afternoon. The issue is I have fed him at 10 before I go to bed as a dream feed and now it’s really tough to drop. And then he wakes up 4 or so times per night after that. We are doing 10 minute checks on him, and he cries harder and harder every time we go in. Today he woke up only an hour after bedtime and is still crying 40 minutes later. I guess I just need some encouragement to hang in there. Feeling like it’s impossible this time around!

And a question about the pacifier, I only give it to him when he goes to bed but I don’t reinsert it during the checks. Should I? He hasn’t figured out how to bring it to his own mouth while in the crib.

His schedule is wake 6-7am (depends a little on the night and also if his big brother wakes him), nap at 9:00 sleep till 10:30, nap at 1:00pm till 2:30ish, bath at 6:15, sleeping by 7pm

Thankful for all advice!

@SweetiePie: We're able to stick to that schedule at home but it's a whole different ball game with getting her on that schedule at daycare.

@Katebydesign: Ohhhhh when you said she started going 4-5 hour stretches at daycare I read that as sleep. My bad!

And now that I know that, agree with @lbee:
My son was on a 4 hour feeding schedule at that age but he was taking like 6-7 ounces per feed. I know many who were still on 3 hours at that age so it’s probably more common.

At that age I would be very comfortable being on a strict schedule vs feed on demand / fall asleep whenever. By schedule I don’t mean by the clock. I mean like no more than 1 hour awake, no more than 3/3.5 hours between feeds and naps 2-3 hours. If she starts waking at the same time each day then it will also naturally fall into the same time schedule each day.

Maybe also read 12 Hours by 12 Weeks? It basically says that night sleep is dependent on ounces consumed during the 12 daytime hours so that they don’t need any during the 12 night time hours. I didn’t read it till after 12 weeks either but it was still valuable and worked for us.

My daughter is a similar age. A few things:
1. Girl can't hang - she cannot stay up past 1 hour or she will lose her mind. It also is reflected in her night sleep.. she is the kind of baby that sleep begets sleep. (she's high sleep needs too)
2. She is on a strict 3 hour feeding schedule. If she is asleep during bottle time we request 30 minutes extension before she is woken-up.
3. By stretching bottles 4-5 hours you are pretty much eliminating one day time feed that most (if not all) babies that age need during the day in order to stretch out night. It sounds like she is just switching her days and nights to address that need.

Candidly it doesn't really sound like the 4 month regression. It sounds like a hungry, overtired baby.

@kiddosc: I've asked them not to keep her awake for more than an hour, because at home she really can hardly go more than an hour before getting fussy. She's definitely a baby that needs a lot of sleep. They say they try but that she just lays there happy and content for sometimes an hour before closing her eyes.

@SweetiePie: She's never napping more than 3 hours. Her naps just happen at inconvenient times :/

@Katebydesign: If she's falling asleep right before her next feed, then it seems like her wake time is too long. At 14 weeks, I would think her wake time would only be around 90 minutes. I know that's not always possible at daycare, but maybe they can try to get her to sleep sooner and then feeds could happen closer to every 3 hours. It kind of seems like she's reverse cycling, though I've only heard of that in the context of breastfed babies before.

@Katebydesign: sleep specialists advise that daytime sleep shouldn’t exceed 2-3 hours max. If it does it can mess up their days and nights so they do longer stretches during the day and shorter at night.
It sounds like she might have switched days and nights since she is going 4-5 hours during the day. I would have them wake her at the 2 hour mark during the day, if it were me.

@petitenoisette: It technically started at about 2.5 months so I'm afraid of what 4 months might bring!

She is napping better at daycare, she just often falls asleep right before she is supposed to have another bottle, hence the long stretch.

You're pretty close to 4 months which in our experience was a terrible sleep regression that our daughter didn't just naturally grow out of. We lived with it for a long time but wake-ups were every 2-3 hours until we did some sleep training. She still would get up after that but not as often.

Is she napping better at daycare? 4-5 hour stretch seems a long time during the day without eating too.

@Jennibenni: If it just started I would chalk it up to a phase. I wouldn't have thought twice about it if it was going on for a week or so. But after five weeks I'm worried this might be our new normal!

I literally just came to hellobee to post a question about my 14 week old now waking every 2-3 hours at night. I wonder if it could be developmental? I'm a little relieved I'm not the only one but holy hell, it sucks.

Prior to starting daycare at 9 weeks, my DD was sleeping 4-5 hour stretches at night without eating, fairly regularly. Five weeks ago she started daycare and like all babies, had a hard time napping. She still struggles. So we've instructed them not to wake her to eat since she had been napping so little. She started going 4-5 hour stretches at daycare without eating, but still eating the same amount during the day. Almost immediately, she stopped her 4-5 hour stretches at night and we haven't seen a 4 hour stretch for 5 weeks.
I wanted to give it some time, thinking things might change and it could be just a phase. But five weeks and feeding her every 2-3 hours at night still is getting super exhausting, especially being back at work.

She does have reflux and is treated for it. She's also on AR formula and was never breastfed.

Any suggestions? Is the only solution to have daycare wake her every 3 hours to feed her? Or is it that she's maybe overtired at night and not necessarily hungry?

Helllppp!

Super duper normal. DD1 started daycare at 10 months and barely napped too. But she started out half day so we were always able to salvage the 2nd nap and by the time she transitioned to 1 nap she was doing great.

DD2 started daycare at 6 months; she's almost 10 months and her nap here still kind of sucks! But such is life!

My son was the same way - he started at 11.5 months. 30 minutes or less for over a month. Then it went to like an hour. Oddly, his naps got way better once they moved him to a nap roll and cot with the other slightly older tots and he will now nap 90 mins to 2.5 hours depending on the day. He still skips naps some days or only sleeps 30 mins but we are just riding it out. Part of it is around age 1 there is a lot of sleep issues (was true of both my kids) so I knew the daycare nap would be where that was roughest. We are going through it again now around 16 months (there's a sleep regression and canines around 18 months) and it sucked for DS1 so I'm trying to ride it out again.

My almost one year old started daycare last week. She is adjusting well (as can be expected) except for the fact that she will not nap. We had a pretty solid nap routine going and this gradual entry has really shaken things up. I know it's only been a week but I need some reassurance.

She has only napped 20 min in her crib and 30 minutes when they were holding her. Yesterday she outright refused to nap even though they were rocking her. This has affected her home naps as she has fought each one and I have resorted to putting her in the ergo to give her SOME sleep.

Is this just a transition? Will she go back to being my (semi) decent sleeper? Her overnight sleep has been great but it's because she is so overtired. Is there anything I can do to help her/the daycare with naps? She has her sleepsack and lovey. I feel so bad for the daycare ladies and my sweet baby!

As others have said, in our state it was cribs until age 1 and then mats, so when she had her first birthday they told me they wanted to try it soon. I didn't believe them that she would do it and I was very resistant! I think she was 13 or 14 months when they finally went forward and tried it, ha, and she did fine :)

I actually think mats are a little easier for LOs that like to be soothed to sleep by an adult because it is easier for teachers to rub their backs.
