These are all great, thank you. And reflecting back on tonight and looking at you guys responses, I see now that she really needs a listening ear. I'm going to drop off something this week and just visit. I can't even begin to imagine how lonely she must feel right now since it's so recent and she said really unexpected too.

Drop off snacks and just make an effort to stop by and say hi when you see her. My mom is a widow and she has so many neighbors who stop by to say hi, keep an eye on her house when she is gone, exchange christmas gifts with, etc.

That is so awful! I am so sorry for your neighbor. I would probably make her a gift basket with some nice things in it like bath salts, chocolates, maybe some baked goods, a good book, etc.

Take her some nice flowers with a card - I did that for the neighbour I'm attached to, in a similar situation. She'll reach out.

eta: most of all, be there to listen if she needs someone to talk to :(

My husband and I have lived in our small neighborhood for 7 years, and we are well-known to a lot of people because we go on nightly walks with our dogs, and now our LO. There is one older couple down the street that always stopped to speak with us.

Tonight, we stopped to say hello to the wife, and she broke down in tears and told us her husband died of a heart attack last week at home, and she found him :( Her kids live an hour away and can only imagine she's lonely. We spoke to her about helping with her yard and her dogs and to call us anytime, but I feel so very sad for her and want to help somehow.

It tends to make me uneasy to intrude into people's personal space because I"m a private person, but any ideas on how to help her besides the yard? Maybe a sympathy card to start?
