I paid $350, which is cheap for the northeast. I felt lucky to have found her, because most of my friends paid $800-$1200! Most important to me was rights to the photos, and I received every single photo she took, outtakes and all. She professionally retouched 30, and I had some artsy friends retouch a few more that I wanted. I have now had six friends use her!

I paid $400, after a lot of shopping around and asking ither moms for reccos for cheaper newborn photogs. The typical going rate is more like $600-1500 where I live, with most of those NOT including digital rights. Mine was a natural light photographer who does not do a whole lot of post processing work. If I'd wanted the very-airbrushed look with a lot of lighting I would have had to pay a lot more.

@Mrs. Pom Pom: you're in my area--actually curious if you're moving into my neighborhood! I was looking at newborn photographers and they can be so expensive here! In the end it wasn't in our budget, but I would recommend The Kama Photography. Karolina did our family shoot last summer and she is talented and reasonably priced. I think a newborn shoot with her is $400, which is about the best I found for good photos.

I Just finished shopping for the same thing. I am a photographer also in Oregon. I've been quoted pricing up to $1500. I have a photographer friend who is doing them for $200 because she is beefing up her newborn lifestyle portfolio and loves our house. My second choice was $500-600, she's a film photographer. For digital I would have paid that or a little less full price.

We paid $500, that was for four hours in our home and she brought props and we digital rights to all the photos. She has other packages that are less- $200 in studio, digital rights are extra or $400 in home, no props but you get the rights to all the photos.

The newborn photographer who took my daughter's pictures started at $500. I got lucky though, and she saw pictures of her on FB and wanted to photograph her. I think she liked her red hair because she kept commenting about it. :silly:

Anyways, she did a fabulous job and I walked away with pictures for $60.

We spent what I thought was too much, which was $1000 for a package which included the session (a few hours since LO took forever to fall asleep plus I had to nurse once), all the digital photos (30), and I think it was like 10 prints of any size (including large ones). The reason we spent so much is that we messed up and wanted to order digital ones a la carte, but DH was so tired, he sent the photographer the list of all the photos we didn't want instead of the list of the ones we wanted! It was cheaper then to just buy the package with everything then to buy the rest of them separately. We live in Boston and it is pricey here but I had originally planned to spend no more than $700. I would not do the whole package again for another LO.

@Mrs. Pom Pom: We did a lifestyle type shoot. Very casual, in our home. No typical newborn posing stuff. It was $600. It would have been $900, but I'm a photographer too, and the photog give me a discount.

@Mrs. Pom Pom: I promise 30-40 photos, but usually delivery more like 60-70 (under promise, over deliver!). Price includes high-res digital images. No prints/albums, but people can buy those as add-ons if they want. I don't tend to get clients who want prints-- I think that is a separate (higher) market honestly.

We got incredibly lucky and I had a photographer friend who had never done a newborn, I asked her if she would be willing to give it a shot. She said yes but she couldn't charge me. So it ende dup costing me a thank you gift card of $50. Now 3 years later she charges almost $400 and I can't justify that cost.

I found another photographer who just did our family pictures and she's doing our newborn for $100, and coming to shoot both in nursery and in the hospital for first family pictures. She's incredibly nice, she just moved back to the area so she's building her client base which is why she's so cheap!

$300 for two hours. I think she now charges $500? That included all the high res photos.

Edit: she is not strictly a newborn photographer. I know the photographers who specialize in that in my area charge a lot more (and sometimes it's difficult to break down the cost, since their sitting fees can be minimal but the purchase of the final product is fairly high). But you're paying for their experience and what you want in a finished product.

i did not do a newborn photo session with my first baby, and this time I'm looking to have "lifestyle shoot" with our little family when our second arrives. In my search so far I'm coming across a range of costs and packages and don't have a real grasp yet on what's to be expected, what's a little pricey (because it all seems pricey). What do you think is normal for costs?

@Mamaof2: Duplicating shots is a good one! She has some SUPER cute shots in her portfolio. It will be at our house which, sadly, doesn't have the best natural light but we'll make it work hopefully! As the time gets closer I think I'll start keeping an eye on when the natural light is best in her room.

How many newborn shoots have they done? How much time do they allot for the appt?

The NB session took 4 hours for us between constant feedings, diaper changes, during the naked photos he peed/poo'ed on the props/blankets/me, positioning and trying to get him to sleep. It was way more involved than I ever imagined and having someone who was incredibly patient made the experience much easier.
