Ugh, I struggle with this Every. Single. Night! I go to bed at 10pm and wake up at 2:45am to pump and then take over from DH so he can go to bed. I usually use my laptop or ipad during the 15-20 min pump (otherwise what else would I do??).

But then afterwards, even if LO (rarely) sleeps for an hour stretch, I find it impossible to fall asleep. It feels like such wasted time :bummed: I also pee in the dark and keep the nursery light super dim for MOTN feelings. I've tried an eye mask, but that didn't work... May need to try ear plugs next. Like @Mae: I'm on edge, waiting for his next wake up, which I know will be soon. When it's our "shift", we sleep in the nursery on a twin bed. White noise machine isn't enough!

Yep. Dreading this the second time. My plan is to suffer through, then try to night wean as early as possible.

@ChiCalGoBee: I close my eyes while I nurse and sometimes dose off. I think it helps. I also try to meditate when I get back into bed and can't sleep.

@Pumpkin Pie: Yep, I don't turn on lights either (I either use the light of my phone or a very dim night light in his room). I pee in the dark, too! My husband turns on the overhead nursery light and I think he's nuts! I'm sure the backlight from my phone isn't helping.@ladybee: Yes, earplugs are key. Pre-baby I used them every night (I've always been a super light sleeper). I need to start using them again!@looch: You're right-no email in the middle of the night. It can only lead to thinking!@tinyperson: Exactly-I hear a single cry and wonder if it's going to progress, or even what @hotchildinthecity: said-a phantom cry that I swear I heard and then I'm on edge listening for more!@snowjewelz: Props to you...I think I've nursed lying down once or twice and had such a hard time! I'm always sitting up in a chair.@Mamasig: I guess now that I'm having trouble sleeping I should just close my eyes throughout...before I would drift off which scared me, but for now it couldn't hurt to try and stay half asleep!@Mae: Thanks for the honesty-I am hopeful that time will be the great healer, as it is with all newborn things! Already him not waking up as frequently as he used to certainly helps!@meredithNYC: Pregnancy insominia-I SO had it! It was one of my first symptoms. Sorry-it totally sucks. I also will likely be following up with you for STTN @ 3 months advice  .

Thanks to all for your advice and tips-I'll keep at it!

I had a super hard time with this, too, and I don't think it really improved until 1) LO was sleep trained and STTN (around 3 months), 2) LO moved out of our room and so I didn't hear every noise, grunt, sleep sounds, etc. and 3) I got a prescription for Lexapro to help with my anxiety!

Now I'm experiencing pregnancy insomnia and sometimes wake in the night and have a hard time relaxing again. Honestly, the most helpful thing has been having an awesome white noise machine.

I had a hard time with this too. I think for me it was a combination of getting too awake and of being stressed about when she'd wake up next. I was too on edge. For me it helped to read on my kindle rather than play on my phone. But honestly most of it was just waiting until she was sleeping a little more consistently so I could stop worrying about when she'd wake up next.

I basically stayed half asleep. I didn't turn on a lot of lights and didn't play with my phone. I relaxed and closed my eyes while feeding. I bottle fed but tried to do the same in the beginning when I did bf.

I was just complaining to my husband about this. When LO first came home i would fall asleep comforting him I was so tired. Now he only wakes up once (occasionally twice) and I have a hard time getting back to sleep after.
I also hear the "phantom crying" and it's driving me nuts. I told DH it's PTSD lol.

I Think the big thing for me is I have to stop checking my phone. I go to check the monitor after I lay back down in bed and then tend to get on tumblr, email etc.

I still have a hard time getting to sleep if I hear LO at night, and she's 2! I think it's pretty normal. I just keep wondering if I hear her if it was a one timer hint, or if something's bugging her and she's going to actually wake up.

The biggest thing for me was not to turn on the lights, or even move around too much, it would wake me up. Then I'd have to get right back to bed and resist the temptation to check email or go online.

I'm up right now after a diaper leak. It's 4:26 here and LO is 14 months old. I've always had a hard time but I think the biggest issue is that I get on my phone. Eat plugs have helped also.

I have a really hard time falling back asleep after night feedings also. My LO is 3 months, and I've had trouble sleeping after night feedings after about the 2nd month. I have no advice. What helps a little is not to turn on any lights at all. I usually use the bathroom after feeding and pee in the dark. I don't check my phone during feedings or turn any lights.

I'm wondering if anyone out there experienced/experiences insomnia after feeding your baby in the MOTN? At first BFing exhausted me, and I was able to fall back to sleep within minutes of putting my son back to bed. Now I find that my mind is racing, I'm unable to get comfortable, I keep thinking I hear him cry, etc., and it takes me ages to fall back to sleep after a night feeding. If you've experienced this, what helped? I have a check-up with my OB 8 weeks PP so will bring it up then, but wondered if anyone had advice in the meantime. My son is 6.5 weeks old, and I'm EBFing.

*I did a search on this topic and didn't find anything, so figured I'd put it out there! Apologies if this has been discussed before:-).

My son was never a textbook sleeper, but i did find that blackout lined curtains helped lengthen afternoon naps. Ours were just plain curtains, with a black out liner...they function just like regular panels.

Now we have blackout roman shades and they are just not as good.

@pastemoo: They're up all the time and we use them for naps, too. We didn't want to invest the money in them initially so we used the type you can get on Amazon that you essentially tape up over the window, but they were a pain and always falling down. So we got the expensive ones and they keep LO asleep until about 7-7:30am.

@meredithNYC: Black out blinds? Do you take them off in the morning before LO wakes--or LO wakes while it is still dark?

Sometimes cosleeping does give me a little extra time to sleep--and to sleep while nursing, too. That's why I do it. Lately LO hasn't been as interested.

We sometimes do the 7pm or 7 30 bedtime. Bedtime was 7 30 a while ago and he started to wake up in the 4am hour FOR THE DAY so that's why I pushed it back to 8. :) I don't actually know if that helped or not!

@pastemoo: What seems to work for us is a slightly earlier bedtime (7pm-ish) and also, black-out blinds. Now that it's summer and the sun comes out bright and early, the blinds are a lifesaver and worth every penny.

Also, we don't co-sleep because my LO never took to it, but a lot of bees seem to do that after their LO wakes up for the day and some say it gives them another couple of hours. Might be worth a try.

I don't know if this is a "sleep training" post or not really.

My LO is sleeping through the night (EIGHT HOURS! YAY!) He sleeps from 8-4 straight. Finally! He is almost 14 months old.
It's been maybe 4-6 weeks of this (maybe 6 nights a week).

I am interested in seeing if we can stretch this 8 hours to more. I know he needs more than 8 hours but once I feed him he goes back to sleep and wakes every 45 minutes until he is up for the day (between 5 and 6 30 depending on the day).

If I don't nurse him, he still needs to eat and generally just decides to be up for the day (though once DH got him to drink water and eat fruit and then go back to sleep!).

I am inconsistent in whether I put him back in the crib or if I bring him to bed with me/us.

Should I mess with a good thing? If so, how?

Tell me about your sleep journey with your LO. :)
