@winter_wonder: those embroidered frames are adorable! I used to do needlepoint (my grandma was our summer childcare) and I’m sure could find a kit or something, maybe for something leafy/botanical.

@bees_knees: malted milk looks exactly like the color of my elementary school bedroom! It is uncanny. I’m not against pink, in general. We have light floors and white trim, though, so that color may not be ideal in our space.

I did see this picture https://uwdecals.com/products/ferns-eucalyptus-wall-decals that I thought looked dreamy, with a crisp white wall and some green accents elsewhere. For my older daughter I painted a mural of mountains behind her crib, so I feel like it would be a nice symmetry.

Not sure how you feel about pink, but our daughter’s room is Sherwin Williams Malted Milk and it is the perfect sophisticated blush color! It looks great against our dark wood trim and brass accents.

@karenbme: we painted my daughter's room yellow and really like how bright and cheery it looks! My grandma also made little embroidered frames pieces that we hung in her room, similar to the one in this pic.

I’m due with #2 at the end of the year and ordered a pullout sectional at lunch today for when our guest room converts to nursery #2 and learned that they’re operating on a 3 1/2 month lead time, which means I need to order basically now to have any wiggle room before my due date, but I’m drawing a blank on nursery colors.

Baby is a girl. Big sister’s room is violet and blue so I wouldn’t want to repeat that. The room is already painted a pale grass green that could work for a nursery but I have no ideas for complementary colors, or we could always paint. Help!

Thanks everybody, I think we decided on the bear. 😃

@Petitduck: @bhbee: @PawPrints: The lack of a face is totally what gets me about the bunny, too! It’s just weird, and I’ve thought about getting eyes/nose to glue on, but I feel like I might not be crafty enough for that. 🙃

@LCTBQE: I also hate the gray everything trend right now! It’s my fav neutral, and will be great for the area rug since it won’t show as much, but too much gray just feels cold.

@Fawn: We’ve got other colors mixed in, too, an orange fox pillow, and multiple colors in wall art, so with that and the natural wood furniture I’m sure the bear would go, even if it doesn’t match. 😉

IMO no eyes are better than bad eyes, which a lot of stuffed animals and dolls have. I literally illustrate and develop animals into products for a living and a quarter of my job is working on layette and children's, so this is my professional opinion :) I do not find the bunny creepy and personally I prefer it.

But, if you like the bear better, I think you should get the bear! Your kid will love either and you're the one that has to live with it. Also, since your furniture is maple, I think the brown bear goes wonderfully with your palette and you won't get lost in a sea of grey which is a design trend that I hate.

I like the bear! I'm not really into matching everything though, so if it's going to bother you that it may not match everything else the bunny is also cute!

My daughter's nursery is mainly light green, light pink, and gray, but we have some random things in there that are different colors (orange tiger hamper, etc) and it all still looks cute together.

I picked the bunny because I generally prefer it, and also because I think it will fit the room better, but if you prefer the bear go with that one - I think you should pick what you like over what you think matches the best.

@Petitduck: Funny, I actually prefer the bunny partly because of the no-eyes - I think it makes it seem a bit more abstract.

I’m pregnant with my first and we’re putting the finishing touches on the nursery, and I need some help! We have a rocker/recliner coming, and wanted to get a little footstool for when we just want to rock. We’re doing a little bit of an outdoors theme—animal mobile and a dusky mountain mural on one wall—and found a couple of really cute animal footstools, but now we can’t pick. There’s a bear, that both DH and I like more, but doesn’t really go with the color palette (lilac/blue/gray but with light wood furniture Stokke crib in natural and maple dresser/nightstand) and a bunny that matches but we’re less into. Photos below. What do you think?

@crazydoglady: We just say that privately, not around her. As for DH being "the father," it always catches me so off-guard that I've never managed to say a word in response. Your MIL sounds similar to mine. I honestly think DH has more anxiety about it right now than I do, because like you and other posters have said, I do truly believe this will all calm down once everyone gets to settle into their new roles in the family dynamic. I think in the long run she's going to be a wonderful, doting grandma. I also agree that establishing boundaries will be helpful for everyone.

@foodiebee: So my MIL was a wee bit overwhelming (i.e. wanted to come to the hospital to help get us into the car, sent us an overwhelming amount of gifts, always wanted to see DS, was LIVID when my husband was unavailable by text for a few hours...ummm...I was giving birth...) I think a lot of it came from her anxiety and uncertainty about what it meant to become a grandmother and the role that she would play. I was very BEC with her and possessive of my son and afraid that this would be a big issue...but it wasn't. She did calm down BIG time once we hit our stride. DS (now 3.75) typically goes to her house one afternoon on the weekends. She often comes over for just a few minutes to hold baby girl (7 months.) She spoils them at Christmas, buys holiday outfits, etc. We just needed to map out our roles which happened naturally.

I would start with boundaries now so they get used to following your lead (especially if they are reasonable people.) I would personally stop joking about the incubating "her baby" because it fuels the fire. I get that you might be saying it to exemplify how ridiculous her sentiments are, but to me, it doesn't seem like a good idea. When she mentions something about DH being the father, I would counter with how "yes and I am the mother and joint decisions will come from US."

My aunt did this. I’m super jealous. Would be so handy. My mom got a playpen and we bought a second booster-high chair. And she has a bunch of toys/books for them. As for the separate room, just let her know that you are rooming in for the time being, but that eventually, you kid having their own room will be awesome (this coming from someone who has to put the pack and play right up against our bed and the older kid on the air mattress by the door). I would kill for a room to put the kids in.

@bees_knees: @bhbee: Ohhh yeah, taking the baby out of sight would be a trigger for me, I think! My MIL is bursting with excitement, which is very sweet, but thrown in the mix are these weird comments like about how XYZ needs to happen "because the baby is DH's and DH is THE FATHER." (Her emphasis.) It always makes me think, "Okay so? What about that I'm the mother?" We half-joke that she thinks I'm incubating a baby solely for her, but it's the kind of joking that is tinged with anxiety!

She even does it with our toddlers/preschooler and finally DH had to tell her to knock it off because she was taking them out of sight in busy public places 🙄 I think she does it because she doesn’t like to share any attention? She also doesn’t know how to play with kids besides showing them videos on her phone so she isolates herself with them.

Sorry. Sore subject 😂
