As a NICU nurse (especially night shift) we LOVE food. And I would say it has to be healthy either haha. Sweets keep us awake at night. I'd say most often we get donuts, pizza, cupcakes or something like that. But we would never turn away fruit either:)

What means the most though it the nice comments parents leave on the questionaire before they leave and sending pictures or stopping by to say hello as they get older.

@MrsRcCar: I think the above suggestions are great. I want to do something for the boys' birthday, and I asked one of my friends that is a nurse in the NICU if she had any suggestions. Here's what she said:

We love food! We usually don't get a lot of time to sit and eat, so quick things or snacks are great. A note with a pic of the boys then and now...we love pics of our babies to hang on our lockers. Also, we have people who give receiving blankets, socks, mittens, onesies, footie pajamas, etc. We can always use stuff like that.

I think this is a really sweet suggestion - I remember feeling like my NICU nurse was an angel. I think coffee and tea would be good, maybe like a gift basket with cheeses and bread and fruit would be nice too.

I suggest you toss in a box of tea as well - some people are not coffee people, and they will be really touched that you thought of them too! I think it's a lovely thing to do.

@NurseMommy: I was thinking something healthy. Most of the nursing staff that I have met are on weight watchers or some kind of diet. Perhaps fruit and coffee wouldn't be a bad way to go. I mean who doesn't love coffee.

As a nurse, we always appreciated when patients families give us healthy food, like a fruit basket. Or coffee. Coffee is always good. And don't forget to send a picture of E when he gets big and healthy too!

Oh and another thing I never did but meant to, was write a nice letter to the hospital naming the nurses and telling them what a great job they did...I always appreciated it when I would get a complimentary email from a job well done.

We're not planning on anything before the birth or during...instead I am bringing my entire OB's office a huge edible arrangement and a thank you card to Dr.xxxxx's staff when I go for my 6week appointment.
I like your ideas for doula and widwife....the nurses: I'd hold off until the morning you leave because you never know if you will actually get along with your nurses (I hope you do!)

I asked moms on my local facebook group and some of them brought things, some didn't. some made cookies at home and brought those (or had a friend or parent do it), some brought donuts, and another girl made chocolate lollipops ahead of time in baby shapes which seemed smart, especially if you don't know when you're going to deliver (but you could totally do cookies - easier!)

@looch: Thanks! I'm not an L&D nurse but it was always sweet to get a pack of cookies or an edible arrangement from a patient's family on my unit. I figure that I'm going to make them work for it anyway, being a FTM of twins! lol they'll deserve a little something extra! ;)

That's really nice of you. I got my midwives a small gift set from Bath and Bodyworks. I wanted to organize something for the nurses station, but when I was there, I noticed no one else did, so we didn't either.

We didn't take anything for our labor nurses! Oops. Probably won't take anything this time around either. :P
A small gift+ card sounds good. I love giving gift cards. :)
Or edible gifts.

Did you ladies give your midwife/OB/doula anything out of appreciation for your deliveries? What about the L&D nurses, mother/baby, and NICU nurses, if applicable?

I adore the midwife that's set to deliver our boys on Wednesday, so I was thinking of getting her something small and a card.

Our doula is unpaid, as she needs one more birth (mine, I suppose!) to be DONA certified. We think she's great, so again, I was thinking of getting her something small with a card.

For the nurses, I'm pretty sure I'm just going to have DH grab coffee and donuts from Dunkin Donuts - I always appreciated a good donut during a rough shift when I worked in the hospital!

What do you think?
