Never really wore nursing clothes! Always wore nursing tank and regular shirts and pulled up. Or dresses/rompers that are button front. I finally bought new tanks/bras with #3 and find Target’s Auden line really good!

You don't need nursing tanks! Just buy nursing bras and some tank tops that you are not attached to. Then wear whatever shirt you want over the tank. When you need to nurse, pull your normal shirt up and the tank down. One up, one down. The tank will get stretched out, so don't expect it to last longer than your nursing life. This works with pretty much any outfit other than a dress.

I did miss dresses during the summers when I was nursing. I switched to skirts, but I don't like skirts as much as dresses.

Try Poshmark! I'm seriously obsesseed with it. I sadly just sold the last of my nursing clothes on there. I liked the brand "Lab40" for nursing-specific clothes. By my second time nursing, I didn't mess with nursing clothes much. I loved high waisted leggings, sports bras that pull down easy, and I would just lift up the bottom of my shirt. Or I looked for shirts in the "suplice" style. I don't know if that name is brand-specific, but its basically like some kind of wrap top.

My daughter is already one, but we are still nursing, and I've been living in my nursing clothes all year. I've actually really loved everything I've gotten from motherhood maternity. I have a couple tanks from Target that have worked well too. I've also been very happy with the bras and a tank I got from Kohl's.

I have some target nursing tanks that have held up surprisingly well. Also this nursing tank is my fave: https://www.amazon.com/BRAVADO-DESIGNS-Womens-Dream-Nursing/dp/B019OYXBT4?th=1&psc=1

I tend to opt for loose t-shirts (just ordered a few from Old Navy) with a nursing tank top underneath for home. I (usually) WOH, so I need clothes that are pumping friendly (access to both breasts, tend not to wrinkle), rather than nursing friendly per se.

FWIW, I've found that you get what you pay for with nursing bras and tanks. The Bravado tanktop is worth every penny and the cheap nursing tanks from Motherhood did not work for me at all (I'm a 38D/DD when nursing).

Baby #3 due in a week, pls hit me up with your favorite resources for nursing clothes - casual spring/summer stuff (tops and casual dresses) comfy for wearing around the house but cute enough for a socially distanced walk around the neighborhood :) Ideally wouldn't spend more than $20/top and $30/dress and it wouldn't be so cheap that it would fall apart after a few washes!

I agree to check tubing /connections and membranes on your pump, especially if you have those thin little membranes they can get tears that are hard to notice. Are your beasts hard/uncomfortable? Is you baby still hungry after feeding? If not and he is gaining weight I'd try not to worry. Were you able to do a weighted feed with theLC? They aren't perfect but might help determine if baby is just a fast eater (my DS2 is). Good luck!

A lot of good ideas here. I second the recommendation to see another lactation consultant. Our issues weren't diagnosed and addressed until we'd seen several! Some states also have a free breastfeeding hotline you can call to speak with a lactation consultant.

Agree with advice so far - hot shower, heating pad, stimulating the other nipple. My LO ultimately figured out the latter on his own and now is hell bent determined to pinch the other nipple while eating.

Also, check your tubing on the pump. This could contribute.

Clogs are usually painful, so I think you'd probably know if you had one...

Do you have a letdown? I found with this second baby I had to stimulate my other nipple to speed up a letdown otherwise my milkflow would be dramatically reduced. Not much would happen until a letdown

I EPed, and if I was having an issue with emptying I always used my hand pump. It was the Lansinoh pump. For whatever reason, it was much stronger than my electric pump and would solve the problem.

A few things:
a) Is there a reason you have been pumping after LO is done nursing? Your breasts don't need to be completely emptied every single nursing session...milk supply is supply and demand and will be catered to your baby's needs. The more you pump, the more milk your breasts think they need to make, and the more you will have to pump to empty them.

b) I know some women really have a hard time pumping if they are at all under any stress.. So maybe the anxiety of no milk coming out is causing some stress? Have you tried changing phalange sizes? Or even tried a different pump? Massaging your breasts while pumping? Hopefully some pumping mamas can chime in here! Whenever I had a clogged duct I could feel a hard lump.

c) Is your baby still hungry when the milk stops coming out? My babies nurse FAST, so a nursing session of a few minutes was not at all uncommon. Just because there is milk left in the breast doesn't mean that your baby didn't get a full feed. Sometimes my babies will fall asleep or just kind of suckle (but not really to eat as much as to nurse...does that make sense?)

d) I would find another lactation counselor if this one isn't answering your questions or seeming to take you seriously.

Hang in there! I know it's so tough to get figured out! Much love.

Take a long hot shower and pump or nurse immediately afterwards. You could also try using a heating pad for the same effect. I also used a back massager while pumping, pressing into the ducts that felt hard to try to get them flowing (anything that, uh, vibrates strongly will have the same effect).

My son is almost 4 weeks old. The first two weeks of his life breastfeeding went great. I could hear him gulping when nursing and he always got enough. Then I would pump and drain the rest. After two weeks I started having difficulties with pumping and I'd have milk still stored in my breasts but barely anything would come out on the left breast. Then about a week ago it got to the point where no matter how much I pumped literally nothing would come out either breast, even though both still have milk in them. When I hand express i only manage a few good squeezes before the milk barely comes out in drops. However he was always able to express my milk when nursing. But as of yesterday he can only express for a few minutes on my left side before he cant get milk to come out,, even though my breast is still full. Could it be a clogged duct even though there is no signs or symptoms of one being present aside from this one problem? Has anyone else had this problem before? Lactation consultant doesn't have an answer it seems, and it's starting to seem like it's starting to happen on the right side. I'm starting to break down and feeling hopeless. I don't want to stop breastfeeding but im beginning to have to supplement with formula. Any suggestions are appreciated!

Back with a review for the one I linked.... not really a fan. My nursing bra (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0799DJP1M/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) doesnt' really fold down easily enough to use that clip on pumping bra. It might work better if I took the padding out, but I have to leave it in there so I'm not so nipply. And it's still a pain to clip it on and clasp it in the back.

I always just in clipped my nursing bra down and put the pumping bra over my clothes. I usually wear tank tops undershorts under blouses or sweaters or whatever, so I didn’t have to get all the way undressed to pump, just pull up outer shirt, down tank top and bra, and then pumping bra over...

Not sure if this fits the bill since it's not really a combo, but at least doesnt require changing bras, it just hooks on to a nursing bra. (I just ordered this one so no feedback on how well it works out yet, but the amzn reviews are really good)

@buttermilk: I really didn't love most of the nursing bras, and while I liked the idea of being hands free, having to completely undress while pumping at work was annoying. I took to wearing nursing tanks under everything instead of bras (boobs not huge over here so it was fine)... i liked the ones that were thicker and had light padding built in to hide my nursing pads.

With the nursing tanks I used rubber bands or hair elastics and hooked them around the suction cups and on the nursing bar (google it) and could be hands free that way!

:)

These were the ones I lived in - i got 4 (they weren't that expensive when I got them):

Hi! Anybody have a recommendation for an everyday bra I can wear for both nursing and pumping? I had one of those strapless zip-front pumping bras with my last baby and was constantly taking it on and off. This time I would prefer a crossover style bra that allows me to both nurse and pump, one I can keep on all day.

I found this one on amazon which seems exactly like what I want but doesn’t have the best reviews for quality. Anybody used it or have another to recommend?

@buttermilk: To be honest, I don't really know. Breastfeeding was so hard with my first and it ended after 7 months due to work (something that to this day I regret). My second seemed easier because I pushed through the difficult weeks, and there was no job either. This one last two years.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! I just ordered the book “Making More Milk” so I’m going to read that before delivery and have my supplements ready to go from day one. I also got a Spectra pump this time which I’ve heard some women are more responsive too than the Medela. I may start taking alfalfa and goats rue in my last month of pregnancy as well. Fingers crossed!

Yes! With my first, I was only able to EBF till 6 months, and supplemented till 9 months when I totally dried up. So many factors I feel like contributed to my low supply.

With my second, I think my supply was better, I was armed with more information, I had less pain, I was more active in trying to up my milk supply and also to build a stash early on. I think I also wasn't as stressed about it which may have helped to have more! I took specific supplements this time around that I've recommended to other bees, and I used that hakka pump in the early days to help build up a stash.

I didn't pump enough for my first, and supplemented with formula when she was at daycare and exclusively nursed on weekends when we were together. With my second, I made an effort to pump more earlier on, added in an extra pumping session in the evening before I went to bed after I went back to work, and ended up renting a hospital grade pump from months 6-12 when I started to pump less than he was drinking at daycare. It was a lot of effort, but I did pump more for him than for my daughter, and with the stash I built up in the beginning, we made it to about 11 months before I ran out, and at that point our pediatrician said not to worry about supplementing with formula.

So overall, my output increased but only because I put in the effort to build up a stash early on. Otherwise I think it would have stayed the same.
