Someone told me once to wear a new pair of red underwear on NYE for luck in love in the following year so my sister and I take turns giving each other a new pair of red undies for Christmas that we wear on NYE.

Black-eyed peas and cabbage on New Year's Day for luck and money in the New Year. I ate it every year growing up, and now I make it myself. Some years in my early-20s I ate them cold out of a can, lol.

Just wondering if anyone else's family has any new year's traditions or superstitions that they follow?

The Hungarian side of my family holds strongly to the superstition that you must enter the new year with a clean slate. That means that you house needs to be cleaned, all the laundry and dishes done and put away, beds made etc. So I'm doing one last load of laundry today and running/emptying the dishwasher before we go out for dinner.

The other tradition, also from the Hungarian side, is that the first person to wish you a happy new year should be a dark haired man. I have no idea what the reasoning is behind that one, but I always make DH call my mum on New Year's Day to ensure that happens for her!

What about your family - any fun traditions or superstitions?
