I saw Dr. Benedetto throughout my struggle to get pregnant with DD1. I. LOVED. HER. She and her husband run the practice. She's Italian and is very no nonsense and straight to the point. But she has a heart of gold, coming in just to see me in the hospital as Hurricane Sandy was bearing down on NYC and held my little girl for a good 15 min, just snuggling her. Once we moved away and i had a number of miscarriages trying for DD2, I called her several times just to ask her advice, even though I wasn't her patient any more. Her one fault is that she swore she'd deliver me but then she didn't. She saw me on Thursday and was convinced I wouldn't be delivering by my due date 3 days later so she was spending the weekend with her daughter because of the hurricane when I went into labor. I had another doctor in her practice, Dr. Cheon who was equally as fantastic and guided me through my labor and delivery with an amazing bed side manner. I wish I could still be at that practice.<br /> No complaints about NYU - I mean, we just spent the night in the dark and had to be evacuated...no big deal hahah. Dr. Brodman won't be delivering babies after the new year, but I love Dr. Friedman and Dr. Kim (who delivered my son). They're super friendly and relatively old school (not crunchy), if you like that vibe. The wait time in the office tends to be very good too. They deliver at Mount Sinai. Sinai West) on 11th Ave at 59th. I love love love my doctor—Dr. Nicolle Underwood—with Westcare OBGYN (located near the Natural History Museum on the UWS). While I was pregnant with my son, we moved to Long Island City Queens but since I was already established with the practice, I continued there for the full pregnancy. I figured I’d switch for a more convenient practice but for the fact that she is just so so wonderful—and after having such a good experience with her during our time trying to conceive including a minor surgery, plus her care while I was pregnant, and then her continued care since (including visiting my son and I in the NICU after his birth and being accessible via text and I could go on and on). But… I just found out that she is moving to California… So I’m trying to decide if I should just switch to another doctor in the same practice—who I know very little about—other than that I had a good experience with her—even though the location is not at all convenient to my home or work. Or if I should find a new practice, made trickier by the fact that I am currently 25 weeks pregnant with my daughter!</p> <p>Here are some of my concerns/considerations: Or to put it another way, my perfect practice wishlist:</p> <p>1) Delivers at a very good hospital—with a good NICU just in case—could be in Manhattan or Queens but preferably convenient to Long Island City (i.e. east side or at least mid-town. Nothing WAY uptown or downtown Manhattan)<br /> 2) The practice itself needs to be convenient—or at least no more inconvenient than my current practice. Long Island City near my home. Midtown Manhattan. Or downtown near my work.<br /> 3) I am currently scheduled to meet with a high risk OB at St Luke’s Roosevelt to get approval to try for a VBAC. I’m only high risk in that my son and daughter will only be 17 months apart—and apparently anything under 18 months automatically requires approval from high risk—or at least it does at St. Luke’s Roosevelt. So of course, I do want to know if any new doctor would let me try for a VBAC (assuming of course that it is safe and all goes well).<br /> 4) A female OB.<br /> 5) And if the hospital had cheaper private rooms than St. Luke’s Roosevelt, that would be fantastic too.<br /> 6) Willing to take a new patient—who is 25 weeks pregnant.</p> <p>Is this impossible? Am I asking too much? What would you do? Stick with your current practice? They run decent sales. My tops were from there or I was able to wear some of my "normal" tops that are longer.</p> <p>Repeat elective C-section - very common, and if this is the path I would start with an OB. I had a repeat C-section at 38 weeks with my second child 5 months ago. I wouldn't expect one to be scheduled before 38 weeks unless there is other areas of concern.</p> <p>OB - you got some good suggestions already, but the dr you saw for your IVF probably also has some suggestions. Since that seemed like a good relationship, that might be a place to start.</p> <p>Doula - I'm not sure one would be beneficial in a C-section. You are typically allowed one person with you in surgery. I wanted my DH there over anyone else. If you're in Newton, MA you are close to some of the best hospitals in the US! Brigham and Women's is excellent and I have a few friends who delivered there. There are also a few other hospitals near by as others mentioned! You can look up a practice and choose an MFM or OB. I would give them a call to get things moving, then you can discuss the c-section with them. You should also be able to speak with a nutritionist in your practice once you choose one to discuss diet. </p> <p> Welcome! I have to see them for extra ultrasounds because of some minor issues.</p> <p>You can find a doula different ways. <a href="http://www.dona.org/mothers/" rel="nofollow">http://www.dona.org/mothers/</a> is a site that you can use, but I just found mine by googling "doula nashville, tn" and then looking through the sites that came up. <a href="http://doulamatch.net/" rel="nofollow">http://doulamatch.net/</a> had some as well, particularly ones that are newer and don't have their own websites yet. The newer ones are cheaper, so that's a good way to find one if you don't want to drop a ton of money on it. Though I would assume they'd charge a lot less for a c-section, since that's scheduled (don't have to be on-call for a month+) and doesn't take hours and hours and hours like labor can! There are also different levels of care doulas can provide. Mine will do two pre-birth meetings to go over things, come to my house when I go into labor, go to the hospital with me, stay up to 2 hours after the birth (she's a lactation consultant as well), and do at least one postpartum meeting. She also provides unlimited support via text/email as needed. Others might have more meetings, or only come to the hospital, or provide postpartum help. It's just what you want. Most are not associated with a hospital. My midwives have volunteer doulas available for free, but they're just on a schedule and you get who you get. I chose to have someone that I could meet ahead of time and get to know (plus she's VERY qualified for some of our more unique needs). We went there for our 12 week NT scan and had some follow up testing, an amniocentesis, and ultrasounds done there because my OB/GYN doesn't do that testing within their office. I'm also not a great candidate for a VBAC either. I'm seeing a doctor from the hospital's department of maternal fetal medicine because I'm high risk for a few things, had a lot of surgery on my uterus and will be over 35 when I deliver, so I talked with them about my chances of having a successful VBAC. They were around 10% since my son got stuck on my pelvic bone and he was a tiny guy. As far as I know most OBs do not have any problem scheduling a repeat c section if that's what you want- you'd want an OB, not a midwife, in that case. I have heard Newton Wellesely hospital is really great. I delivered with midwives at Mt. Auburn, like rachiecakes, but had a low risk low intervention vaginal birth with midwives.
