@Happygal: she's not a huge fan of me in general . We have known each other for 15 years and were in the same high school class. We ran in different circles and apparently she can't move on. That's probably why I was so upset because I try really hard to be kind and thoughtful towards her and her family but never get the same response from her. Just bitterness and judgement. I just need to learn to let it go.

@Modern Daisy: thst is so true! Kids can do a lot lore than a lot of people think

Oh and I think people in general are weird about feeding babies/small children. DS is almost 3 and has all his teeth but our parents STILL chop everything into mush that they feed him. I'm like : "he can eat a whole carrot" also daycare sent several notes home about cutting his grapes in half until I finally called the director and asked for an explanation since his actual doctor was the one who told us not to cut them! No more notes after that.

If your doctor approves it then I don't see what the problem is? Sounds like they have too much time on their hands! You could be doing much worse things when it comes to parenting so seems crazy to me to make a big deal over this.

Has she been like this before? She clearly has strong opinions based on her professional field, and people often jump at the chance to remind you of credentials and share what they know when they're experts. If this is a first time occurrence, I'd take a deep breath and let it pass at this point.

@peaches1038: not that I'm aware, but she probably didn't advertise it either (not because she thought there was anything wrong, just because it never came up.)

As long as you're comfortable with what you're doing it doesn't matter. It's annoying to get unsolicited advice, but that's what happens when you have a baby unfortunately. It's easier to just say thanks for the concern, we will that under consideration than get into an argument about it. Ultimately, your kid your choice. No one has to agree but you and DH.

FWIW, we did BLW and DD had no teeth until 9 months. She's a great eater at 2, has never choked and I have no regrets. There was gagging early on, but it was minimal.

@Mrs. Lion: @Truth Bombs: @Mama Bird: thanks all for your replies. You all reiterated some of the info she gave me that was actually helpful and that I appreciated! I am a first time mama and obviously don't know everything (or even close!) so I welcome advice. It was just the tone of it all. We've had issues in the past as well, so I'm probably extra sensitive about it. After all this, DH and I have decided to back off a bit and stick to softer fruits and veggies for a while to give him time to learn. He doesn't need to know the joys of carbs quite yet :silly:

I can see some of her concerns... at six months, my DD had only two teeth but she was really good at gnawing huge chunks of food off (which she totally couldn't chew). Fruits with skin were a problem too, she'd gnaw off the skin but couldn't chew it. I stopped giving her anything that wasn't mushy for a while, and when we tried more challenging food a month later, it was a big difference and she was so much more capable of chewing tough foods or spitting out bits she can't handle.

But... you know your child best, I'm sure you were watching him carefully while he ate, and your SIL could have just called you up and talked to you! Somehow things come off a lot harsher over text sometimes.

While she shouldn't have taken a judgey tone with you, it does sound like she raised some legitimate concerns and you did learn some things that would be helpful towards keeping your baby safe. Even when we feel we are well researched, there's always more to learn. So maybe try to focus on the fact that there are lots of people who love and care for your baby, and try to ignore the rude way she communicated her worries.

I think as far as BLW goes, people just dont understand. Trust your gut!

Please dont take this as criticism, but we actually didnt do raw veggies until they had molars. Not sure if thats an actual rule but since they arent soft I did worry that a piece could break off and be choking size. That might have been something she was concerned about? But her response was still pretty harsh and not really helpful.

I got a lot of "oh that makes me so nervous" from our families and none of my friends have done it, so I definitely know what you mean about people not getting it! Even my pediatrician kind of gave me the side eye haha.

@catomd00: it's the choking. Did your sister have any trouble from her coworkers?

@Ajsmommy: haha hopefully they will come around soon!

@PawPrints: I don't think she was saying anything about the speech aspect, it was more swallowing. I think I need a tougher skin since it doesn't look like these ridiculous mommy wars are going to end any time soon.

@Adira: thanks! It's just hard to ignore when they are saying you are endangering your child. I've gotta be stronger and not back down, which is a habit of mine as I hate conflict.

@snowjewelz: thanks, I don't see a problem either. DH and I eat with him and are both certified in cpr/first aid

@erinbaderin: I think this is the approach I'm going to take. Keep my emotions out of it and just keep it simple

@Tanjowen: family drama is the worst. If it were my sister, I'd just be like WTF. But with them, it's just awkward and terrible. I really hope it smooths out soon

@gingerbebe: ugh you just can't win, right?! It's ridiculous!!

@swurlygurl: yes, the gagging vs choking is a big thing to educate our family on!

@macintosh: I can't wait for that moment! They are def busybodies.

@hawksaz: that's what I've been thinking too! I mean maybe moms chewed it and did a "baby bird" but I can't imagine they would do that for long!

@JerricaBenton: yeah I think we will hold off on noodles. That's the advice I was happy to receive, just the tone was very off putting. I think we will try to stay away from carbs in general for the first bit.

@JenGirl: I was reading the skin helps for gripping? I have no problem cutting it off though. Do you leave the skin on anything you offer?

I think what you did all sounds fine. I'd probably cut the skin off the cucumber, but that's it. What was her concern with noodles? As long as they're in long strips they're great for BLW! I'd probably drop it, but if she brings it up again, send her some BLW sites.

We did BLW and lo did great. It's definitely at least part of the reason she's a great and adventurous eater. The only thing that might give me pause that you mentioned is the lasagna noodle, because it's soft and floppy and doesn't dissolve - but you know your child and as long as you're right there and prepared to help in the event of choking then I can't see a problem. People about died when they saw me give lo a hunk of steak on the bone. Even though BLW is really pretty natural it's still one of those 'new concepts.' I live in a pretty forward area and I know no one else IRL who did BLW. Honestly I keep most stuff off social media when I don't want comments.

You are fine! My mantra for BLW was to avoid major choking hazards (grapes, nuts, etc) and always watch him while he's eating. That way you can see how they are handling what you offer and adjust accordingly. At first they aren't even close to swallowing anyway, they are just tasting.

I told DS' doctor about BLW and she was fine with it. At his 12 month checkup they asked "how much baby food is he eating per day?" I proudly said none, he eats table food!

I think your SILs are just being nosy. You do you, mama!

Ugh, this was the worst part of BLW - the other people! I think my ILs would have rather seen me riding in a car with them on my lap, than doing BLW!

What you're doing sounds fine. As long as you're monitoring your baby to make sure accidental large chunks don't come off in the mouth, you should be fine.

Also, I'm sure you've done all your research, but make sure you know how to tell other people the difference between gagging and choking. Any time L or K would gag on a piece of food, all my ILs practically flew across the table to swat her back :meh:

I'm not sure what she thinks you are doing so wrong? I did everything the same way except for the egg yolk, but I had concerns over family allergies and waited until 9 months to offer it to LO.

My mom had a very hard time with BLW and would hover over my LO and panic every time he gagged, but we stuck to our guns and would reassure her. Anytime my siblings brought it up, I would smile and tell them I was obviously a lazy parent that didn't feel like bothering with purees. It was kind of a smart ass way of saying "back off" and they did.

Anyways, sorry there is family drama. It's unfortunately inevitable in most families, but it smooths out as they grow, or so I'm finding out.

I agree... BLW is definitely still a relatively "new" thing depending on what circles you run in.

I'm not sure what they are saying that's harmful to your LO... I don't see any issue with it.

Not sure what SIL 2's issue is. As long as you're not giving him anything he could choke on, I think you're fine!

I just ignore people who give me grief about my parenting!

There's some issue with BLW and speech/language development? I'm curious what she was saying, if that's what it was. I think the things you are feeding sound great. And you can post whatever you want on social media, if others want to get all huffy about it that's their problem.

I don't think you did anything wrong either.... we did BLW and loved it. My mom and MIL had some issues with it (not as openly as your SIL) but we just stayed firm in our decision and they came around. I would laugh when they came over and would give DD teeny tiny pieces of food when she was used to eating much bigger pieces and DD would give them funny looks..... LOL

What's the concern? My sister is an SLP and has done BLW with her kids.
