I've got a girl, so not really any suggestions for the standing bit. Our approach has been very similar to @Weagle: We didn't use training pants or a small toilet. We bought a ring for our toilet at home and underwear. We always offer the bathroom before we leave home. And we offered the bathroom frequently when out.

Regarding public bathrooms, with the seat gap, I often had LO sit to the side. Public bathrooms are loud! LO is just now learning to accept auto-flush toilets (almost 6 months in) and she still despises hand dryers. Flush the toilet first, let him see how loud it is and what it does.

Regarding your husband, I feel like he needs to get on board. I think that's how our daughter grasped so much quickly. She went to the bathroom with me. She saw how it works through observation. We are expecting #2, and I told my husband very plainly if this one were to be a boy (it's not) that he'd have to take the reins with training. DH and I are both now comfortable with him taking LO to the bathroom in public too.

@T-Mom: Haha Interesting. Either all men were not properly potty trained (therefore their public bathrooms are gross), or they all share a common fear of sitting down on the toilet when you don't have to because they never had to deal with that. Lucky them.

@Mamaof2: I suggested that too but DH won't do anything "unnatural" such as holding LO up in front of the urinal (because it is too tall.. please do advise if there is some crazy trick that is not so crazy lol). He is also the type of person who is very uncomfortable with having LO seeing him pee or taking a shower and what not. So that's kinda off the table (for now). I know, i know.

@T-Mom: Part of the reason DH has announced he won't help on potty training. He has a deep fear to public bathrooms. Sigh. In fact, he refused to even change LO's diaper when we were at the airport yesterday because he went earlier and "it was nasty" (I mean, how nasty can it be for an airport bathroom?). I said, so you think the women's bathroom is so much better? He said, well women take better care of themselves (thus the ladies' room must be like palaces and men's bathrooms were like landfills). Yeah right.

I have a friend who does not allow anyone in her family, kids included, to use a public restroom to do poop... Only pee allowed.. I couldn't believe it but I guess they just learn to hold it... People adjust and so do kids... He will get it (hopefully soon)!

@irene: Alli know is to just point his little thingy down for him until he gets the hang of it. That's what I had to do for the little boys I used to nanny for. We have a hard time with full-sized toilets because while LO will sit on them (at home or church, only once out at a restaurant) she just says, " I do it by myself," and pushes my hands away while she's basically falling in. I can't get it through to her that she has a tiny hiney and these things are huge!

@T-Mom: Good point about family bathrooms... haven't encountered one place that has it yet when he announces something is happening or about to happen....

I do have to avoid restaurants with a huge open gap toilet seat for now on though. So sad. one of them is my favorite (which LO screamed when I carry him close to the bathroom because of how small+not clean the slots were)! :(

Thanks all...! I have removed a lot of those items from my cart lol. I am still going to buy 2 training pants just in case (plus 7 elmo regular briefs). Then I am getting an on-the-go potty for the car, with liners, just in case....

@irene: the only training pants I had were the Gerber brand that I saved from my DD but we used them maybe twice. It's really the same as a regular underwear, just a little more absorbent. It still feels wet when they have an accident and you may have less of a "puddle" at his feet if he pees in it. I don't think a lot of gear is going to help you... My personal opinion. Sounds like he is still in learning stages and it will be a little messy (literally) for a while. Have you tried the family bathrooms when you are out and about (assuming they are available)? Those are a little more inviting for little kids due to lower potty height...

@mrbee: I don't know, he just hates public toilets like his dad LOL. But honestly, I really don't know. I think it is not what he is used to? (there is no adapter seat like at home, and it is not clean? and there were many people / noises? but then he also didn't want to sit on the toilet in our hotel bathroom which is very clean and very quiet)

@Weagle: I hope this is a phase that he will eventually reach.... and thanks for letting me know about the training pants! In a way, even I can't quite get to imagine how to make him sit and do his business on a public toilet with a huge gap in the front of the seat. I just don't get it.

@irene: LO sat on the public potty once all weekend. She didn't pee. Instead she waited until she got out to the splash pad we were visiting :) She has the option, but we don't force anything. Just keep offering. LO hasn't ever used the small potty either, but like I said, it's just for emergencies (ie we're in a traffic jam). By the time she will need it she will know it's her only option unless she wants to go on the side of the road... Which I guess will be fine too. If he was traumatized by underwear, training pants probably won't help. Unless you get some specialized kinds that have an adjustable absorbency they're going to be pretty much just like underwear. They're made for dribbles, not accidents. It does sound like he's made great progress! But I doubt buying stuff is going to help at this point. It's a mental thing, really.

@Weagle: Thanks for your advice!! If I had your LO, things would be very different LOL

- LO won't sit on a public toilet... I tried, he screamed and struggled! Sometimes he won't even let me carry him to go near the toilet. So I don't quite know how to "practice".... I will keep trying but there is nothing I can do if he won't even sit down...

- He won't even sit down on his small potty.... let alone doing his business. I wanted to keep a travel potty on the car too but I doubt he'd even use it...

- LO doesn't quite know how to empty his bladder when I put him on the potty yet. He flat out doesn't know how. So he's not quite there yet.

- I was considering training pants because he wet himself 4 times in underwear and he was traumatized. So traumatized to a point I was worried he won't even pee in his diaper (that's when I put a stop to our bootcamp)

@mrbee: Thanks!!

@Sammyfab: Thanks!! Haha I would let him pee in the bushes without a blink (well, when there is no toilet available of course) and underwear under the diaper is a good idea!

We're not far into potty training, but LO has done really well so far. I feel I might have a little bit to contribute. I must say, though, that I'm not one to do more work than needed for this kind of stuff. For instance, we do treats if she goes to the potty and remembers to ask when she's successful. I am not going to buy paraphanalia and make charts and go all out if she doesn't need that kind of motivation. So, if you're the kind of parent that wants to cover all bases from the get-go (no shame in that game!), then my bare bones approach is not the best for you.

We're not doing anything extra as far as making potty breaks outside of the house more like home. She's going to have to learn to use those toilets, and I think the best way to do that is practice. Plus, I really don't want to carry around a potty seat. Gross. We will keep a little potty in the car for emergencies.

Second, my LO doesn't see any difference between regular panties and training pants. Yes, the training pants are a tiny bit thicker, but if she's really going to wet her pants the lining does no good. It's not enough.

We've been out and about since day 1, and the best thing for us has been teaching her to empty he bladder before we leave and giving her many opportunities to potty in restsurants/stores/church/etc. She's only going to learn by experience.

Awesome progress!!

Going to the bathroom is public is still a work in progress for us. This past weekend we had him stand on the seat and we helped direct the stream into the toilet. It was a bit of a mess! I purchased this seat from Walmart but we have yet to use it. http://www.amazon.com/Sesame-Street-Framed-Friends-Folding/dp/B00076SL0I/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1405391624&sr=8-3&keywords=portable+potty+seat

I am also kind of ashamed (well, not really) to say that we often have him pee outside on the grass if we're out and about and he tells us he needs to go and we're not in a place with accessible toilets.

ETA: we don't use training pants - just underwear. Sometimes if we were out for awhile I would put his underwear on under his diaper so he would be aware that he had an accident. He only managed to have accidents without the diaper though :silly: .

The thing is, he pretty much refused to use the public toilet 100% of the time! Then he won't use the small potty at home. I have $150 worth of stuff in my amazon cart waiting to check out (well some are not potty related lol) but I just don't want to buy things that wouldn't work. Training pants, 2-in-1 portable potty + seat, on the go potty liner refills, travel potty) Argh. I guess I won't know until I buy it huh (like the small potty that he never used).

Sounds like really positive developments!

We used a portable small potty that he could use anywhere... but over time, he started going regularly at home at the same time every day. That made it a lot easier to plan around! He also got a lot more comfortable just using the toilet seats directly. That happened over time, as he got more comfortable with the process in general.

Great progress! I kind of feel that if he is asking to go to the bathroom you could just act like he is potty trained when you are out and take him whenever he says he needs to go. Sometimes it is hard for them to pee on command. During potty training I had to take my DS six times (lost count actually but he asked every time) while we were in the same restaurant and he only produced pee one time. But it let him know that going in the diaper is no longer an option.
We don't even use the portable seat topper any more it was just gross and he didn't even like it. The gap in the public seat is a little unnerving but I just let it go and tell myself he will get a bath later. I try to cover with toilet paper but most times my DS wants to remove it because it bothers him. It takes a little persistence and patience but I think you are doing great and it sounds like it's clicking. Not sure if I answered your questions!

LO is 2.5 years old and we are in the potty training dilemma. We have tried the "modified" 3-day bootcamp which failed miserably over the Independence day weekend, but things have changed since. LO has been requesting to use the potty before he poops 80% of the time, and he has been pooping in the potty for 80% of the time when he is with me. (Note that he never requested to use the potty before the bootcamp) He has also seemingly started to tell me he peed / about to pee. Dirty diapers is starting to bother him. He wants to be changed even if he has just peed a little. Yippee!

With that said, I am in another dilemma. We were out of town over the weekend and LO was a bit confused. We were out and about most of the time, so we weren't able to change his diapers immediately regardless if he told us that something has happened. There was one time he announced "pee pee poo poo" several times over a period of half an hour. I asked if he needs to be changed he said yes, but I peeked inside and there was nothing, and he was dry. I asked if he wanted to sit in the big potty in our hotel room and took him to the toilet, he refused (and it was a nice bathroom!).

So, from your experience, what should we buy for a successful and consistent potty training experience even on the go / on the road / everywhere?

More facts and questions:

- He prefers to sit on the big potty with his adapter seat.

- He has a small potty at home which he never sits on it.

- We have some underwear, which he wet himself 4 times and he was traumatized. I am thinking of getting "training pants" which supposed to have linings. Should I? If so, what brand would you recommend?

- I have been tempted to buy those 2-in-one potty seat / stand alone potty things on amazon ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0016KYMMU/ref=ox_sc_act_title_9?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER ), but I kinda don't think I can carry that around when I am out and about, right? Besides, that thing would be super nasty if I do put it on the big potty in a public bathroom, and it is kinda silly that I have to wipe that thing down and put it back into my bag over the next years..

- many public toilets have a big gap on the seat toward the front. If you let your LO use the big toilet directly when outside, How do you deal with that?

- What do you do when you are inside a small bathroom lot that your LO won't want to sit on the potty, but the slot is also not big enough for you to pull out a travel potty, or even just a tupperware? (Yes that's a friend's suggestion and she has 3 potty-trained kids)

- Any other tips while traveling / on the road / outside that can help you on creating a consistent potty training experience?

LO was less than one week old. It felt good to get out of the house! We just go in the early morning or late evening and I watch him for signs he's getting too warm.

The day we got home from the hospital, but that was January. In the summer we usually walk around 9pm when it cools down.

@Bookworm: I'm in north Texas right now visiting my sister and we took a walk yesterday with E in the Ergo. We kept it short because it has been crazy hot, but maybe I can convince DH to take an evening walk if it isn't too soggy still.

First walk was when DS was 3 weeks old in January in Baltimore. I took him out in the car before that, but had a c-section and was worried about doing too much walking myself.

I'd say just keep it short, keep LO shaded and have fun!
