Thanks all! Sounds like what she's doing is pretty typical. We'll keep trying...worst thing that happens is she doesn't take to it.

My son is 3 months and I usually have to hold it in his mouth for a minute or so until he really gets sucking it. We mostly just use it to help him fall asleep.

LO seems to like it very occassionally. Sometimes it will soothe her when upset but other times she gets super pissed and spots it out. I think we first introduced it around 4 weeks.

I tried every single pacifier (mam, nuk, soothies) from three weeks on per bf recommendations. She just wouldn't take one. I'd warm them up, put milk on them but nothing worked. I continued to try sporadically for the next few months. Finally at almost five months she decided she was interested in them. So happy I kept trying because it really was a game changer for rides in the car and sleep.

DS took the soothie brand the first night in the hospital! I read somewhere (Happiest Baby on the Block maybe?) that in order to encourage your baby to take it, you should put it in their mouth and then try to take it away. Their reflex is to suck it back in! If you try to push it into their mouths by contrast, their instinct is to spit it out.

@atoz: I've heard it's common for them to reject it at first. it probably took my son a month to "like" it. We started him on it when he was 4 weeks old or so. We used the Avent ones. We only use it to get him to sleep when he's crying- he sucks for like 3-5 mins then spits it out.

@Banana330: Interesting. The only one he can even kind of keep in for maybe 5-10 seconds is the smallest - MAM for newborns. I feel like even the Soothis brand one is too hard/big.

@Littlebit: hahah - this is DH's thinking and his method when he stays up with the baby. I'm like - it's much too much work to try to hold it in all day for him. I give up after a few tries.

@buttermilk: I've heard good things about that one! I just ordered one to try last night on Amazon! FX'd!

@wrkbrk: lol! Reverse psychology on a newborn! I love it! He just turns his head or gags, so there's no even tempting him.

@rachiecakes: Girlfriend, you and I got a group of thumbsuckers! waahhh! I'm still trying to figure out how to get K to stop. *sigh*

@shopaholic: lol! I'm sorry :silly: J was the SAME WAY. I wasn't anti-paci from day one but he'd only take it for a minute before spitting it out. But oooohh he would fight to get those fists in his mouth, even in the hospital the nurses couldn't keep him swaddled.
Yep, going to be 4 and still a thumbsucker!
I'd keep trying with the paci, even just to give you a little break here and there.

I was anti-paci in the beginning with DD as well but once she was bottle trained, she took the paci very well.

I held off on paci's a bit with DS as well but he just never took to them.. Like you, I tried many diff brands and tried to hold it in there for a bit to get the sucking going, but he didn't care for it. No thumb sucking, either.

I would just keep offering but maybe he's just not a paci-loving kid ;). Hopefully your little guy stretches out the time btwn his feedings soon and can learn to self soothe in other ways.

We waited to introduce it until about 6 weeks but she didn't take to it until about 11-12 weeks. She only likes the MAM style, never cared for a soothie. If there is a next time, we will try much sooner though I know there is no guaruntee that will go differently. I think if you just keep trying in different scenarios (for us, the first time she really took it was on a car ride, after a variety of attempts) they may realize "hey, this helps me feel better!" and a light bulb will turn on. That was our experience anyway! Hope your baby comes around to it!

My LO didn't hold in his pacifier for very long when he was sitting upright. He never tried to spit it out when laying on his back. It definitely seemed like he kept trying to play with it or something and it would fall out. There is a lot of holding it or putting it back in. It got better though as he's gotten older.
