@mrsmenow: hmm, not sure [I swear I am so spacey now-is this mom brain? anything I don't write down goes right out of my head. but anyway...I'll try that out tonight. I just brought my manual to work today so I will see if it happens with that one too. Its definitely happening on my electric with current settings [about mid-level suction and speed].

@charlotte: LO has always had a white tounge too! It is a milk tongue:)

If you are just transitioning to pumping only your body might just be letting down more forcefully to the pump. If you adjust your pump settings do you still have the pain.

I use to get a really deep pain behind my shoulder during letdown if I changed the way I help LO during feedings, I just figured it was just because of different areas getting more suction then they were use to.

all the time, but with him eating every 2-3 hours I wasn't sure if there would be enough time for it to go away. I will try to scrape it off and report back when I am home tonight [ back at work right now :( ]

Can you scrape off the white on his tongue? Does he have it all the time or just after he eats?

oh and I should mention I thought I read that if the thrush is deep it gets into the milk, and so drinking the pumped milk is spreading it to him. BUT....could be totally wrong and unrelated, its hard to do my research after only a few hours of sleep ;)

@hilsy85: no, they are totally fine. only real issue I'm having is the deep painful letdown feeling. And I never had it when nursing or even pumping in the early days, just in the past week.

I have a painful letdown, but I also have an overactive letdown...not sure how that would affect your LO if you're pumping though. Are your nipples red/sore/itchy/peeling? Those are all symptoms of thrush as well.

Never had thrush, but letdown was never painful for me. Just a tiny bit of pins and needles at the nipple.

Background: based on oversupply issues and going back to work soon, we have moved to exclusive pumping. DS has not nursed in over a week.

Just in the last week, I have been experiencing a very painful letdown everytime I pump. It hurts midway between breast and shoulder (upper chest area), deep inside. Other than that I have no pain...

LO has been increasingly fussy and gassy during the same time period. In trying to find solutions and reasons, I came across info on thrush. He DOES have a white tongue, but sort of always has? If we had thrush, would there be definite other symptoms? Do some people have deep, painful letdowns that are normal?

So confused and thinking I might just be stretching to find a solution. All of our issues always seem like there could be a million reasons and I can't figure out what is really going on. BUT I would like to know what everyone thinks about the painful letdown..
