Oh, and I highly recommend getting a brown sugar keeper. It keeps the brown sugar so much softer than any air right container could.

And I also like a powdered sugar keeper like this one. It has a sifter built into the lid so you can sprinkle it on things straight from the container vs using a sifter or a mesh strainer or whatever. I love it.

The reason I like these - you can label the front (I did some but not the rest, not sure why, lol) and then instead of rooting around through lots of bottles and bags you just pull out the one you want. For my spices I also labeled the tops of each so that once I pull it down I can see what’s what and pull it up without lifting every single bottle.

My goal is to get more and do one with pastas/Mac n cheese, etc. One with my nut butters. Etc.
I also have organizers in my deep snack drawer but I’m not sure you need that. But I can share if interested.

These for corralling. They are perfect. I’m obsessed with them. I don’t have a pantry (dream someday) but I use them in my cabinets and in my medicine/toiletry closet. I have found similar on amazon but I find it much easier to get a bunch that fit and coordinate together well. I’ll add some pics in a minute.

I buy some things in large bags 25-50# and store in rolling dog food containers. If Im making a lot of something, with 15 cups of flour or oats, I just roll out the big container. Otherwise I use smaller ones and don't mind refilling. We have ants and nice regularly so keeping stuff in original packaging is not really an option. Plus refilling is a good sensory task for kids.

@JennyPenny: ahhh gotcha. Yeah then that wouldn’t make the most sense unless you did a center column of drawers. I’d still vote to go to the container store; their elfa system is pretty awesome! Just take your measurements and see what they could suggest. They are also really good about designing shelving to fit popular container sizes!

Thanks everyone! It’s nice that you all like having containers. I was worried it’d be irritating to have to refill them and no one has mentioned that, aside from making sure they’re big enough.

@Littlebit7: I initially wanted drawers but I think my pantry makes it impractical. It’s a regular reach in pantry that’s 45” wide inside but the opening is only 32” so I’d lose a ton of space I think :/

I don’t have a walk in pantry but I do have two banks of “pantry cabinets”. Drawers are pretty darn helpful. The rest of my pantry is cabinet depth shelving and it is pretty annoying to dig through To find stuff at the back. These are “problems” I know, but still. If I were to design a pantry I’d do a mix of drawers and cabs. I do like the oxo pop containers and anything else square or rectangular, but I’d measure out first and go to the container store after.

We finally have a pantry and I’m so jazzed about it. All things container store and a special plug for the home edit line of containers. I did Elfa shelves and drawers.

I’ve had Oxo pop-top containers (square and rectangle) for years — some of them are probably close to 15 years old by now — and they work great. The only downside is they’re a little bulky, I’ve seen similar containers that are slimmer and would probably fit my cabinets better but it’s not worth changing them all when they still work fine!

My suggestions would be to measure your space carefully to see which containers would fit best, and to list EVERYTHING you might want to store in them to figure out quantities and sizes. One shelf in my pantry is a graveyard of half-finished ingredients still in their packaging because I don’t have enough canisters or space to put them if I got more.

Has anyone bought a bunch of storage containers for organizing their pantry? If so, what did you get and do you like it or would you choose differently?

The reason I ask is that my MIL had generously offered to install a custom pantry for us, but I think rather than having fancy drawers or anything I'd like to have plain shelves with some nice baskets for corralling chips and boxes and things and some nice sealed storage containers for staples like flour, sugar, pasta, and other grains. But I'm curious if this would be an annoying system to maintain or if it is as lovely as I imagine it would be. Also there are way too many choices for containers so having insight into what works well for others would be nice.

Here is our pantry; it’s a walk-in pantry which was definitely a selling point of the house!

We keep all spices and oils we use every day (olive oil, balsamic vinegar, as well as flour, sugar, tea, coffee, etc.) in a cabinet in our kitchen so those are not pictured here. Also, we keep at least a case of wine in the pantry, but also have a fully stocked bar (stocked with another 12+ bottles, plus all the liquors and mixers) in the bar. The refrig is a little wine/beer/water chiller.
