I went back to work when my nursling was 14 months old and I didn't bother weaning him, I just let daycare sort it out! I knew that my wee guy could settle to sleep if I wasn't around and sure enough, the daycare ladies stroked his face at nap time and he happily went to sleep in his cot. Wee dude is now 26 months and still happily nurses 2-3 times a day (he usually nurses to sleep during the day) and still happily sleeps for 1-2 hours in a bed at daycare.

I went to work at 10 months and left WCM for thr feeds I wasn't there for (it worked out to only 1, I think. I didn't wean or prepare. If I was home (weekends, etc), I nursed. If not, I didn't. It wasn't a big deal.

@delight: Thanks for the suggestions!
@petitenoisette: @mrsbubbletea: This is good to hear...I've been worried about the transition being even harder if she's going cold turkey. I guess we're on an okay track then since we've been reducing her feedings. @petitenoisette: Good to know that it worked itself out. She always goes longer than I anticipate when my mom is watching her (away from me, distracted, having fun etc.) so maybe it will be the same in the fall.

I'll be honest, I would probably work on reducing sessions a little bit, but for the most part enjoy my time with my baby and not stress. It will work it self out when you literally aren't there to nurse.

I think that it's really hard to wean before naps when you are still there. I had the same plan to wean prior to nap time over my summer break before my LO went back to daycare at 18 months. It just never happened and I didn't send milk to daycare anymore and she was fine. She would never drink cows milk so that wasn't an option. We still nursed before naps on the weekends just fine until I fully weaned her at a little over two. The nap session was the last one to go.

I slowly weaned over the summer before going back to work. DD was the same age as yours. I just switched to WCM in a sippy before her two naps. I gave it to her in the family room though while reading stories. Then we would go to bedroom and put on sleep sack, maybe read another book. I kept nursing morning, after work, and before bed for a little while longer. At that point I wasn't nursing to sleep ever though.
Now I have DS who is 7 months and I'm going back to work in September. He doesn't nurse before his first nap because he eats a huge breakfast and just isn't interested in it. Can you try having breakfast closer to nap?

@kayla0416 @avivoca: Did you just do a straight swap, or did you gradually reduce nursing & offer WCM instead? I've also been trying to nurse in different places so she doesn't expect it when we read in her rocker before naps...I should probably be more consistent about this. Thanks for the reminder!

@erinbaderin: Sure. She's fallen into a natural schedule, though it varies some days. Usually it looks like this...

4am: nurse (~20 mins...it's long!)
6:30 am: nurse for a a few minutes
7:30 am: breakfast
9:00 am: nurse for a few minutes, get ready for nap 10-15 minutes later
10:30 am: wake, snack & WCM
12:30: lunch & WCM
2:00pm: nurse for a few minutes, get ready for nap 10-15 minutes later
3:30pm: snack & WCM
6:00ish: dinner
6:30is: nurse
7-7:30ish: bedtime
Basically, I feel like I'm feeding her all day.

Thanks for the input ladies; I really appreciate it. Would love to hear more!

We swapped nursing for a sippy cup of WCM when we weaned. At that time, we were just nursing in the mornings. Also, for about two weeks, we couldn't even sit where we used to nurse (in my bed right after she woke up) because she would get very upset when she couldn't have milkies.

When we cut down on nursing at about that age, we switched to a sippy of WCM while reading a book in the rocker in place of nursing before naps. Is that something that might work?

It was probably an easier switch for my daughter though because she's been at daycare since 12 weeks and was used to a bottle of pumped BM before naps there, so I don't think the switch was as big as switching from nursing.

Can you give us a sense of her eating/sleeping schedule? My first suggestion would be to try to separate nursing and sleeping, so maybe you move up the nursing sessions by a half hour so she eats, then plays, then sleeps. And do a snack before nursing.

LO is 13 months and still nurses 5-6 times a day (including 1 overnight feed). I'll be going back to work in the fall and by that time, I need to wean her from at least 2 of those feeds. Unfortunately, they both fall before her nap.

I've tried don't offer/don't refuse, but we just always end up nursing. She's not usually nursing to sleep, but if I try to skip/majorly reduce the feed before her nap she just screams and won't sleep...so I end up feeding her. She drinks about 6-10 oz of WCM a day and usually eats 3 meals plus 2 snacks.

Any tips?! Similar experiences? Feeling like a total newbie with this one. Thanks!
