I read her post and totally understand why she banned it!!

I feel that same way about Max & Ruby. Max, the little brother, talks in one-word sentences. One boy I nannyed was 4 and obsessed with this show. He was a great speaker, full sentences, large vocab etc. After watching this show he started talking just like Max, one word sentences. It was soo annoying! I had to tell him to use all his big boy words. It took a long time for him to go back to normal

there are some shows I totally hate too. Like Yo Gabba Gabba. wow... stupidity at it's finest!

We'll try to avoid TV as much as possible - that is how we both grew up. I find a lot of the Disney shows troubling, especially for tweens. The kids are all OMGSODRAMATIC in their mannerisms and actions, it makes my skin crawl. I find the princess "culture" troubling as well.

We'll try to stick to animal based stuff and educational shows (not necessarily geared towards kids) once TV starts being integrated.

I will also say, TIVO or streaming is the best ever for kids. I nanny for different families and you can always tell which kids watch commercials - they're always asking for specific toys or talking about where they want to go eat or play (McDonalds, local jump houses). Not harmful necessarily, but certainly more annoying for parents to be saying No all the time :)

@Mrsdaredevil: You don't meet many people who were raised that way. I just think there are so many small and insidious influences to grow kids up too fast in TV shows. I mean I see things like iCarly on in patients' rooms and I wonder if these kids (or parents) are picking up on the references. It gives me the heebie jeebies.

We have so much more family time for not having a TV. But I will admit that the computers are a horrible time suck too!

@Mrs. Jacks: I hope to do something like this, if DH will get on board. I never had TV growing up and I feel like we benefited so much from spending so much active time outside, doing lots of crafts, reading at a young age, etc. I didn't get TV until I was 17!

We just cancelled cable again; we kinda go back and forth every few years, but we were waiting to cancel it again until the Olympics were over. :)

There's a lot of "children's programming" out there that I do not like. Particularly, I don't like the shows on Nick Jr., Cartoon Network, the Disney channel, or regular Nickolodeon. Maybe when DD gets older I'll change my mind, but it seems to me there are a lot of mindless tv shows out there for kids that do not have any real worth. And some of the tv shows we've tried (the Backyardigans and Wild Kratts, for example) seem really innapropriate for a two year, to me.

Right now, DD can watch up to 15 minutes a day of YouTube clips, and on Fridays we have "Pizza and movie" night where she gets to watch one full episode of a tv show (approximately 22 minutes). The shows we allow her to watch are Sesame Street, Blues Clues, and Clifford the Big Red Dog. And she watches YouTube clips of Disney movie songs (she really loves the Lion King songs!).

I'm with @Mrs. Jacks. We cancelled cable about two years ago and only watch Netflix streaming after our LO has gone to bed, if at all. It was a tough transition, since I was used to just putting the television on for background noise while cooking or puttering around the house, but now I don't even think about it! I haven't seen any kid shows that I would want her to watch at this point. Maybe Sesame Street when she's a couple years old?

DD is just now starting to pay attention to the TV; DH has let her watch a few kid friendly shows on Netflix but she is more interested in dancing along with the Backyardigans theme song and then loses interest once the show actually begins. Since we don't have cable or satellite and just stream what we do watch we have a lot of control over it and rarely have the TV on except for the few times above and if it is on then we are either watching news or baseball.

I have banned DH from watching a few shows while I'm awake though.

My LO isn't really into tv yet so I don't have that issue, but I will have no problem saying no to shows for my LO.

I just read this blog post (from WB blogger Mrs. Dumpling) and it made me think about what shows we will let LO watch when she starts watching TV.

http://theomgmom.com/why-i-had-to-ban-caillou/

We have started putting the TV on more kid friendly channels when she is around (when we are getting ready in the morning and after dinner at night). She doesn't sit down and watch anything yet, but she will pause from playing on the floor to look at what is on TV.

I can see how some shows could influence bad behaviors or just be annoying for parents. I know we will discourage a lot of the Cartoon Network shows like sponge bob.
