@mamacate - Oh WOW! That is super crafty and cool! I wish my DH were more handy and stuff. He would just tell me to pay someone to hang this! lol

And we added a few birds hanging directly from the ceiling, not attached to the branches, that 'fly' when the air blows in the room. I don't have any good pictures of those...

@shopaholic: DH cut a dead branch off the grapefruit tree in our backyard and sanded/washed it. it worked out really well. I was able to find a decent picture of ours.

Here is the link to the original post:

@mrssuperhero - Thanks and can't wait for the post!
@skibobrown - That seems like a great idea and probably a simple DIY (especially for a Fall theme!)
@mrssunglasses - Cool! Pics or a post anywhere?
@SCG00387 - I bet it looks good from any angle!
@msmini - Oooh! LOVE you nursery and mobile! I think I've seen some like that on Etsy! Super cute!

I DIY'ed ours! Sawyer LOVES it (almost too much - LOL) he talks to his owls when he should be sleeping. I set mine up at an angle so they could be seen both from the adult and the baby perspective. I should get my DH to take a baby perspective pic.

I'll be DIYing ours.. my Mom pointed out that the animals ought to be perpendicular instead of parallel... but my thought is that the movement & noise & color is enough to lull and distract even if he'll be looking at the bottom of the animals' feet! But maybe I'm just rationalizing because I want it to be pretty LOL

We DIYed ours, but for Mavrick we had a ficsher price one (but it broke after too much winding) he loved it! Sienna's is more decor than anything.

My baby is 6 months, and we just finally ordered her mobile (a Calder-inspired one from Etsy). I have noticed though that my daughter is completely entranced by trees. She loves watching the branches and leaves sway around. Going outside and looking up at trees instantly calms her down when she's fussy. So I imagine that a mobile that looks anything like a tree would be awesome!

I did a DIY, post coming this week! I really don't think that you have to worry about it helping their development, it's meant to help them sleep!

@mamacate - ITA! I'll try to google it. Did you use real tree branches?

I found the store mobiles to be uattractive or overstimulatinh and overpriced, so i made my own. There are a lot of cute diys out there, including paper-based ones oif you are crafty. I ended up making the spool bird mobile and it was a lot of fun. It invoves sewing fabric birds that are stuffed and placed on branches. I dont have a link handy but you cangoogle it or let me know if you want more info.

We LOVE our Fisher Price Precious Planet 2-in-1 mobile. Baby Checkers has always loved it, and in addition to having the really neat ceiling projection feature (which also serves as a night light to some degree), it was one of the few mobiles I found to be cute. I've recommended it to all my friends and they love it too!

Met up with a GF who just had a baby (6 weeks ago) and somehow we got to discussing visual stimulation, colors, and mobiles. Came home and did a little more researching and it seems that mobile objects should face flat toward the crib (which makes sense, duh), but most mobiles face the walls.

Most interactive (sounds, lights, etc) mobiles seem like an eyesore, but the aesthetically-pleasing ones don't seem that great for baby's development?
I also read b&w is too stimulating for a mobile, but babies like primary colors?

Any good recommendations or other advice for a crib/playpen mobile? Mamas - do you really recommend this as a "must-have" or just a "so-so" item? Also, did anyone try to DIY a mobile?
