@wrkbrk: He's almost 7 now, but he's had them without supervision since he turned 4. Since he was 2, I would buy the light colored versions (there's a set that is neon colors or something and they don't stain as badly as the bold and classic sets) and he could have them in the kitchen, when he was sitting down. We have an old formica table that I can clean with a magic eraser, so I figured that was a good place for art (markers and paint).

There's a set of color wonder markers that look like paintbrushes, those were a bit better than the traditional markers. I was disappointed in the finger paint, they're clear gel and don't spread that well.

@wrkbrk: I started out with the color wonder, we actually still have them around, they're my favorite thing to bring to other people's houses. I unleash my kid on their white couches and watch the fun!

But seriously, my son found them a bit frustrating, there's a weird "delay" to when the colors appear sometimes. So we went to the washable crayola markers and never looked back. My son's even got sharpies now, and you should see the surface of his desk, it's all marked up, but hey, it can be fixed with a little light sanding eventually.

@looch: This is my feeling too, about keeping them restricted. I figure crayons & stickers should be fine... @SweetCaroline: Smart about the cupboard--maybe we can figure out something similar! @Mrs.turtle: That's what I was worried about too! Paints are staying away for sure.

I also clearly need to get her more art supplies...so far she has some crayons and paper, and a few paints we use occasionally. I have a mission now...

We moved to our house when my son was 2 and I immediately let him have access to art supplies in the kitchen. I have this random wrap around bench for seating, so I have a table pushed up against it with bins on one side of the bench. Anything you can possibly imagine is in those bins...with the exception of kinetic sand. We had it and after constantly sweeping it up, I had to toss it.

My son also has an art cart in his room, I can't remember how old he was when we got that, but it has things in there that I don't mind if he uses in his room, like stickers and markers. Just no paint in there.

I was of the mind that if I kept the materials restricted, he'd never learn how to properly use them, so once I was confident that he wasn't going to put them in his mouth, I let him have at it.

I also have a huge role of Kraft paper. We often wrap family gifts with it and I let her go crazy with craft supplies.

Crappy pic, but DD is 2-1/2 and has free reign to crayons, safety scissors, markers, a coloring book, assorted paper and several sticker pads.

In a difficult to open cupboard that she mastered a few months ago she has glue sticks, tissue paper squares, dot markers, foam stickers and other random craft supplies. She can still access them on her own but I hear the cupboard open and am aware.

Following. We are at 2 years old and I have no intention of giving her free rein. I'm sure it would work for some toddlers, but mine would have the entire house painted in about 5 minutes. 🤣
I'm thinking of a small table with chairs and somehow storing the art supplies underneath it, or possibly installing shelves over it out of reach.

How do you store or set out your art supplies for your toddler? DD is about 18 months old and she's really enjoying making art. Right now we keep everything stored in a basket just out of her reach, because I'm a little nervous about giving her free rein with crayons at this age. But I'd love to make her paints, coloring supplies, and paper more visible in a way that's also visually appealing. Would it be crazy to store some of these things at her height at this age?

How do you store your art supplies? Bonus for pics or links. Thanks!!

@Mrs. J: when we move to our next house we are going to have a travel/world theme playroom but for now this is ours. We sacrificed a dining room for a playroom, I like the toys being in one place and this room works so well as it's gated but adjoins both the kitchen and the lounge so I can see him playing easily. I think the must for every playroom is organization and storage. If everything has its place it's so much easier to keep tidy!

This is our playroom, which is technically the "sunroom". I'd really like to get some window treatments and do some decorating, but it's been a lower priority on the list since we moved in over the summer.

@shopaholic: that little fox is actually a heatable bean bag pad for the microwave, DS saw it at winners and broke into laughter (which rarely ever happens) so i decided he had to come home with us.
