Our Pedi's office had something called a Baby Basic's class, so they more or less answered every single question we could have ever thought to ask.

- what are their office hours? do they have after-hours?
- do they have saturday appointments?
- where do you go in case of an emergency? (We were instructed to call the pedi's office to be routed to the nearest hospital, based on injury. not all hospitals in our area are equipped to deal with infants/children)
- what are their views on BFing, formula and vax?
- Do you like the pedi's/nurses/staff?

We had already met the doctor and heard him speak about how to pick a pediatrician, so we didn't have many more questions. We just wanted to go meet him and make sure we felt comfortable with him, and make sure the office was clean. Things that were important to us when picking a doctor was their hours- our place is open 365 days a year. And they encourage you to call and ask questions if you have them- which we do a lot.

I interviewed a couple different ones and actually ended up going with another pediatrician! DS had a last minute appt and that pediatrician was available. I'm so glad it worked out this way because his doc is great! I think the most important thing is if you trust the doc and feel comfortable to ask anything.

We just interviewed one and found a few questions online to ask:

- Make sure they take your insurance
- Do they have a separate waiting room for sick kids vs. kids just there for checkups?
- Vaccinations (can you vax on a delayed schedule, etc.)
- How do they work covering for when you need to come in but your doctor is out/busy

Overall, how do you feel about the practice? Do you like the waiting area? The receptionist? The nurses and doctors?

Hope this helps!

I never interviewed our pediatrician, but I guess the things I would want to know up front would be their views vs yours on vaccinations. Some are really pushy about them. Also, who is oncall when they are off.

Our midwife referred us to a pediatrician that they have had great experiences with and who generally sides with a parent on the choices they want to make for their child. I scheduled an appointment with her to ask questions to see if we want to make her our pediatrician.

What questions did you ask your pediatrician? I need to start a list and don't know where to start!

We got a recommendation from several people to a large practice near us, and we met with several of the pediatricians there and chose from them. We absolutely love our practice. The best part is that they're open 7 days a week!

@miss-spunkin: Yeah, I'm going to look into it. It's a pain in the butt, but I don't want to have to lie or withhold info from my pediatrician because I'm afraid of what she's going to say. :P

I think middle of the night nursing is pretty common practice for moms who co-sleep? Not sure though.

I was all wound up today but started feeling better after I nursed my LO to sleep. She's at an age where she asks for milk by saying "mam-ma" (food in Korean), tugging at my bra or searching for it when she's sleepy. I told DH I'm not depriving my LO of milk if she wants it.

Thanks for your support and encouragement! Means a lot :D

@chopsuey119: yeah I saw that post, I felt so bad for you. Honestly I have never heard that you HAVE to give up night feeding when they're older, and honestly I think that logically, sugar in your breastmilk causing tooth decay is bull. But idk, I'm no doctor, I just think it sounds contrary to the fact that breastmilk is basically super-milk and the best possible thing for LO regardless of age. Sugar in breastmilk is nothing like table sugar.

I think you have the right to find a new pediatrician. Or at least get a second opinion before beating yourself up about it.

I asked for a rec but didn't put too much thought into choosing a pediatrician. Looking back, I should have made sure I chose someone who supported co-sleeping, limited vaccines, nursing for 2 years, etc.
:T I wasn't happy earlier because my pediatrician made some comments about co-sleeping and nursing in the middle of the night that didn't sit well with me.

I have a 5 week old and sine my post-partum care with my midwife is ending tomorrow, I am thinking about this.

I'm very concerned about it because there are some things I feel I am doing as a parent that most doctors would frown upon (co-sleeping, limited vaccines etc) and I don't want to feel criticized or judged when I am doing what I feel is best for LO and myself.

I will ask my midwife for recommendations so hopefully I don't have to do the research myself.

How long did it take you? What method did you use?
