I'm super hot, have a mild headache and puke if I move too much / too quickly on the bed. It has done a good job bring my BP down though.

I was on it for 48 hours at 27 weeks, with a steroid shot to follow. It worked, the PTL stopped (I was still put on bedrest though). It made me feel like I was hungover, flushed face, really hot, hungry but not able to eat, it also made me itch, and a bad headache.
I hope it helps you, it's not fun.

@ChelseaRose: I've definitely got a headache at this point! And the blood pressure cuff every 15 minutes is tons of fun! Thankfully I don't feel too out of it yet so maybe I can manage to avoid that.

I was on it for a day or two before delivery and 24 hours after. I was so out of it. It also made me nauseated and gave me a headache, so I had to take meds to deal with that as well as blood pressure meds (labetalol). That required a heart monitor and blood pressure cuff (going off every 15 minutes around the clock). I was so miserable. I'm glad it didn't happen until 38w5d so I didn't have to stay on it long. I hated it afterward because I couldn't do anything, had to stay in bed, barely nursed, and have almost no memories from that time. I didn't remember even telling my mom that my son was born and asked my husband several hours later when we were going to call her. I really hope to avoid it this time because it was one of the most awful parts of my first delivery experience.

@Mrs Green Grass: They did do the bolus first and have now switched me to a slower drip. So hopefully that will be better. I feel fine so far - just flushed.

@Mrs. Tiger: yeah - they let me inhale some food from the cafeteria before they started the drip but not being able to eat will be rough for me. Especially since they seem to be expecting my induction to take a while.

@Mrs.ThinMint: We're definitely glad that we've made it to 37 weeks before dealing with pre-e. So far I'm just feeling flushed but we'll see how things change the longer I'm on it!

Oh yeah I forgot about the water restriction. You can have about a cup a day in addition to IV fluids. I don't know if they give you the same strong bolus used to stop preterm labor (prob not) so maybe it won't be as bad. You get used to it after awhile...:)

@Mrs.KMM: I was on it for 49 hrs when I went into pre-term labor....they kept me on it so that I could get the steroid shots needed to speed up the development of LO's lungs. I'm not going to lie....it's not fun at all. I was on a very high dose (higher than normal....even my nurses commented on the doctor's orders). At first it was ok (I have pretty high tolerance for this kind of stuff) and then I started feeling like I was going crazy! I could on,y have little sips of water and bits of ice and my mouth felt like it was full of sand. I couldn't get comfortable, my body ached and I almost felt like I was hallucinating for a bit. A lovely night nurse came in and rubbed my back for me while I slept and it made me feel much better. But I was definitely tossing and turning and not feeling myself.

Prayers to you! You are a strong lady and you will get through this!

I had severe pre-eclampsia at 27 weeks. I was on a mag drip for 4 days. It was pretty terrible to be honest, but a lot of that had to do with how long I was on it. We were trying to keep my son in as long as possible since it was so early. I have a friend who was on one just for the duration of her labor and her experience was much better than mine. It does make you feel very very hot, so turn the AC down and get a small fan. Just tell everyone who comes to see you that they should just dress warm. It made me have some trouble remembering things, so make sure you have someone take lots of pictures and video. I'm so sorry that you are going through this. Pre-e is a terrible disease. While it's bad at any time, I'm so glad that yours is occurring near the end of your pregnancy. Please feel free to ask me any questions at all.

Mag makes you feel really whoozy and out of it, but it actually reduces the risk of cerebral palsy so that's an added benefit. I was on it for 14 days straight. It's not my favorite thing I've experimced, but it's worth it to have a healthy baby and mama!

Wishing you all the best.

Does anyone have experience with being on a magnesium drip?

I got sent to labor and delivery from my 37 week appointment this morning. They've diagnosed me with severe pre-eclampsia and are inducing me today. They've also started me on a magnesium drip as my BPs are high enough that they're concerned about seizure risk. They said I'll be pretty much stuck in bed tied to an IV pole for the whole labor now. Tell me about your magnesium experiences.

I was hospitalized at 37 weeks with pre-e, I had had massive swelling and high blood pressure but never felt "off", headaches, nothing. In fact, I felt pretty great aside from the swelling (and pregnancy carpal tunnel, that was a bitch). I had low blood platelets, too.
They released me on strict bed rest because my BP would improve significantly if I was at rest and my hospital doesn't like interventions like inductions or csections unless they are a true emergency.
I was induced at 40w1d because my blood pressure skyrocketed again and I wasn't dilated showing any signs that he was on his way.. little bugger.

The swelling was my worst symptom. I only had +1 protein and pressures were acceptable... That is until delivery when everything skyrocketed. They needed to control my pressures at that time even though delivery was the cure.

I had pre-e and delivered @ 34 weeks just a couple months ago . I had had high blook pressure all along and the protein in my urine had increased over the course of the pregnancy. I never had any swelling, headaches or vision changes though. My doctor did say that a headache caused by pre-e would feel like the worst headache you've ever had in your life. Not sure if this is helpful and I'm definitely not an expert but if you have any other questions let me know!

Congrats on making it to 37 weeks, good work :)

I just did the 24urine and tons of blood work for my elevated BP readings. Of course I'm running high at home and not at the office lol She also checked my reflexes before ordering the urine and blood work which I was confused about. But, one of my good friends is a nurse and she said my reflexes could be over active because of the BP or something lol
The swelling hasn't really been too bad. And I haven't had headaches or anything yet.
I had Pre E with both my previous pregnancies.
