@Mrs. Pickles: Glad to hear things are going well. This is a topic I think about a lot because my blood pressure was getting borderline high but I wasn't put on any meds. I had a scheduled C section at 38.5 weeks due to baby being breeched. Hope things continue to go smoothly for the remainder of your pregnancy.

I developed pre-e with my last pregnancy and was induced/delivered at 37 weeks (was just hypertension starting at 30 weeks).

I'm currently 38.5 weeks with my second and so far no issues at all - in fact almost no swelling even in my feet at the end of the day, and my bp has been fine throughout. I did take baby aspirin as suggested by my doc this time, and had lots more ultrasounds to keep an eye on baby. But glad to have a "normal" pregnancy this time around!

I developed HELLP syndrome/pre-e on my due date after a totally non eventful pregnancy. I was spilling protein and my BP was 160/110 5 days after a normal appt!

They told me the chance of getting HELLP again was either 1 in 4 or 1 in 5. Which is terrifying! Even though everything turned out ok, it was pretty intense.

I've been taking baby asprirn and calcium supplements per my doc's orders and checking my bp
it's been pretty consistent and good so hopefully things will continue on that route, 31 weeks this week and I only have mild swelling in my feet at the very end of the day
with my previous pregnancy I was puffed up like a sausage all day every day so I'm feeling better about that

just taking it one week at a time and hoping for the best :)

Not pre-e, but I had pregnancy induced hypertension with both pregnancies. It was far worse the first time around and swelling and hypertension started around 20 weeks. The second time only started in the final month.

My SIL had it very severely with her first pregnancy (induced at 33 weeks severe), but was fine her second pregnancy.

@mrsrugbee: After I had my son, my OB told me that I there was just as much a chance as me getting it the second time as there was for any other woman to get it and I shouldn't let it deter me from getting pregnant again (mine was really scary toward the end).
I mean I know there is a slightly increased chance of getting it the second time if you had it with your first, but he really made it sound like it wasn't as big of a risk as some make it out to be.

I don't personally have experience with this but I have read that if you had it with your first, you're likely to get it with your second if it's the same partner. Apparently the best theory for pre-e is that it's an immune incompatibility with the father's genes.

Some more granola sources (Ina May) put forward that a vegetarian, whole food diet can help avoid pre-e but I'm not so sure it's so simple.

I had it the first time as well- though worse than yours.

I'm not pregnant again but if it helps at all I've read that making sure you're getting 100+ grams of protein a day can also help lessen your chances of getting it. basically add chicken, turkey, yogurt, and eggs to everything!

I know this is an old thread, but something that's on my mind now that I'm 12 weeks with #2. I'm monitoring my bp at home, usually two times a day, and the perinatologist just told me to start taking baby aspirin daily as a preventative. He said that the risk for repeat pre-eclampsia is about 1/5 or 1/6 and that the aspirin can reduce the risk slightly (about 20%). Last pregnancy my BP starting slowly creeping up in my third trimester, but I wasn't officially diagnosed because my protein was fine (below threshold in a 24 hour catch) and I didn't have other symptoms. I was induced at 38.5 and delivered 39 weeks, but actually had a seizure during delivery (cesarean). I would pretty much do anything to prevent that from happening again.

I hope the rest of you have great outcomes for your second and don't have repeat issues with pre-eclampsia.

I'm curious to hear about others' experience with #2 as well. C was born at 33 weeks due to rapid onset pre-e & PPROM.

The OB who delivered C said that pre-e moms are 30% more likely to develop pre-e in subsequent pregnancies, though I've seen varying data on that in the literature.

I'm curious too, great question! I started developing pre-e at 23 weeks and was hospitalized and then put on bed rest until I delivered at 34 weeks due to pre-e. I vaguely remember my OB saying at my 6 week post partum check-up that you typically don't develop pre-eclampsia any earlier in subsequent pregnancies than you did in your first. I could definitely be wrong though....

Congrats on your pregnancy! Wishing you a healthy 9 months!

I had a mild form of preeclampsia week 38 in my first pregnancy, I was induced and then had a C-section... I started swelling at 6months but no protein spillage until 38wks

now that I'm pregnant with #2, it's constantly in the back of my mind since I'm only 11wks. I've told my doctor and they are watching me closely and have put me on calcium and baby aspirin as a preventative
Tell me your story, did you get pre-e a second time? Was it worse?

@Mae: You make a very good point. At the end of the day the only really important thing is that we do whatever it takes to have a healthy mom and baby at the end of the delivery!

@BabyBruins: I hope you are able to have your vbac! But, as you say, keeping everyone safe is the most important thing!

@GreenThumb: You know what's funny? I have always suspected that our June Bug would come early... I just didn't expect for it to be this way!

@Mrs. Jacks: The research I have done since we came home has convinced me that induction is probably the best thing we can do at this point. I certainly appreciate caution when my and my daughter's health is at stake! My husband spent yesterday cleaning the house for me, and I had to settle for re-packing our birth bag and diaper bag. Thankfully we already have everything set up for her arrival! I do wish I had more to do than just watch movies, though...

@mrsrain: I was sort of pre-pre-e with gestational hypertension, low platelets and vision problems starting at about 37 weeks (also out of nowhere). They monitored us for a week but after two trips to L& D triage we were told we would be induced at 38 weeks. The induction was just fine but I did end up asking for an epi about 8 hours after everything started. We had LO about 2 hours later. Wishing you the best!! I know it can be hard to wrap your mind around early induction when you weren't expecting it but your LO must be ready to arrive!! :goodluck:

@mrsrain: I got put on bed rest at 33w6d for high blood pressure but my blood and urine came back okay. I had my first son at he same point (33w6d) also bc of pre-e/HELLP. I hd to have an emergency c-section with my first and I'm trying to do a VBAC with this one. After 2 weeks my doc was happy with my blood pressures and allowed me 1 mild outing a day. At this point (36w5d), if my blood pressure goes up or if it would necessitate medication, thy will just try to deliver me.
I have limited induction options bc of my previous section so I'm starting some of the old wives' tales to "get ready" - pineapple, papaya, sex, acupuncture, red raspberry leaf tea. I don't think I'll go into labor if I'm not ready, but I think that I can make my uterus nice and favorable for induction.
I know it's not the birth you imagined (my c-section 6 weeks early wasnt) but a healthy baby and mom is what is important.

I'm sorry :( I can't fully relate because I didn't have pre-e, but after having midwives and planning on a natural childbirth, I did end up with an emergency induction due to high bp at 41w1d, and that meant I had to be hooked to monitors and couldn't labor out of bed really and basically my labor/delivery was the exact opposite of what I was hoping for (induction, epi, c section). But the thing is--- it honestly sort of doesn't matter. I'm only 5 days out from my induction and I already don't care. My LO is here and safe. I'm fine. My recovery from c-section has been not bad at ALL (actually sorta grateful that I am not having to deal with all the normal postpartum healing). I'm just so happy that it's all done and she's here and healthy and I'm healthy that I find the "how" is no longer important to me. I hope that if the worst happens and you are induced (and hopefully that won't even be the case!) you find the same to be true. No matter what happens, if you get a healthy baby at the end it's all okay.

@rachiecakes: Ugh, I can't imagine having to go through all those L&D checkups! :bummed: I'm hoping that my Bishop's Score will be high enough if it comes down to it, to make it an easier delivery. I don't know whether I am dilated or effaced at all, but I do know that baby is at +2 station (and has been for about a week).

I think I would rather be induced this week and just have it done with, as opposed to going through the cycle of waiting and checkups and waiting and more checkups, and still ending up with an induction later on... but of course, every day that baby is inside is better for her, so I guess this is one of those times to just wait and see!

@mrsrain: that's what happened to me :( Nothing worked to bring down my blood pressure except lying on my left side, so for three weeks, that's all I did. I had bi-weekly check ups, NSTs and BPP ultrasounds (I actually loved seeing his little face twice a week). 4/5 times I would get sent to L&D to check-in because something wasn't right in the check ups.
I was induced at 40w1d. They induced me with Cervidil but my water broke overnight and labor started immediately afterwards so that's all I needed to get things going. DS was in a terrible position (posterior and at first, brow presentation) and got stuck, so I did get an epidural to relax my body so they could try to turn him manually. With the help of a vacuum he was born a little over 24 hours after checking in to be induced. And I was barely dilated, baby was still up high, etc.
Wasn't ideal, but not too bad either. :)
The worst was the bed rest and getting sent to L&D over and over. I kept thinking something was terribly wrong and getting scared. (My fault, the doctors/nurses always assured me that I'd be fine.)
You're so close! :goodluck:

@mrsrain: You spray it on your skin, I usually put it on my legs. Unlike taking it internally, your body will only absorb what you need so it's impossible to overdose. Let me go find you a link....

@Arden: What is magnesium spray? Like... where do your spray it? Unfortunately I can't take baths anymore (tub too small to get in and out of) so epsom salts are off the table...
