Thought I'd bump this since it's World Prematurity Day today. Any other preemie moms out there?

Earlier this year I had a 25+4 baby boy who weighed 1 lb 14oz. He had a Grade 2 brain bleed and was on oxygen support until a few days before coming home at 39+6. I never imagined I'd have a micro preemie. It was the hardest and most stressful thing I've ever gone through.

@Mrs Green Grass: thank you so much! Yeah I've heard feeding can take awhile... It's unbelievable when you think about it - learning to suck, swallow and breathe at the same time!

@lauren0817: good luck with everything! It's never great to be in the NICU, but it's also kind of cool to get to watch development you wouldn't normally get to see... I hope eating goes smoothly (that was the toughest part for us).

Oh I love this post! Our little miracle, Matilda Jane, was born at 32 weeks last Thursday by emergency C-section after attempts to get her high heart rate under control in utero were unsuccessful and she became distressed. She was 4 lbs 7 ozs, 18.5 inches long. She had an extremely rough first night due to a reaction to the heart medications used to treat her heart issues, but is doing well 9 days later. She was intubated, then on cpap, then a nasal canula and now breathing on her own! The next step will be learning to eat - she is doing well with breast milk feedings through her stomach tube right now. We started kangaroo care yesterday - seriously the most amazing thing ever :)

Born at 33+1, but she was 5lb7oz, so she was pretty big. They put her on the cpap initially as a precaution, but she was off all breathing assistance by day 2. She was in the NICU for 15 days, mostly because she was too sleepy to eat enough. She's about to be 5 months now, and is almost 13lb, doing great! You'd never suspect she was a preemie.

Lo2 was born at 34 works via c-section due to the onset of severe preeclampsia. She spent 4 weeks in the NICU for feeding/general prematurity/ brady issues. We were released this past Friday and our only remaining issue seems to be reflex, which I expect we'll be dealing with for some time.

Born at 31 weeks with severe IUGR; he only weighed 450grams at birth.

Currently in NICU & so far has received 2-3 blood transfusions, has a small PDA & grade 1 brain bleed, on cpap, lipids & is tolerating his feeds well at 2 ccs every 2 hours. They also managed to place a PICC yesterday with no issues. The plan is to keep increasing his feeds by 1 ml every 24 hours & hopefully get the low hemoglobin under control with this latest transfusion. As for weight it's so hard to get an accurate measurement because of determining what's fluid weight gain and what is actual fat weight gain.
No idea on when he will be coming home.

My water broke at 28 weeks and I was put on hospital bed rest. I kept them in until my scheduled induction at 34 weeks. They told us that twins rarely come home at the same time and they defied the odds and both came home after 15 days in the Nicu.

Baby girl was put on c-pap for a day and oxygen for a day. Baby boy needed oxygen for a day but then switched to air. Baby girl was the one that needed to catch up to her brother. She did. Towards the end of their Nicu stay, she was the one doing better than her brother. She's such an underdog!

E was born at 35 weeks due to infection of undetermined origin. He was born unable to breath on his own and required CPAP. While on CPAP, he ended up with a hole in his left lung. The hole in his lung forced him onto a 100% oxygen hood to seal the hole. He remained on oxygen for almost the rest of his stay in the hospital (13 days total). E also required an NG tube until he could take all his feeds by mouth.
Most importantly he came home on no tubes or wires and he has grown to be a happy healthy almost two year old.
