Hello wondering what you resolved about the Perrier possible high nitrate issue? I don't eat meat, dairy and already get enough grief from my siblings that I'm not eating enough protein simply because I refuse to eat meat. They have never heard of a woman being vegetarian and pregnant, those two don't go together in their eyes. Please reply, I drink lots of water but would love to get some variation in my beverages.

@looch: Yeah I definitely realized that. When we were having troubles getting pregnant, my best friend in the US was like, "What the heck, they'd be giving you drugs and IUI here by now!" (Which isn't necessarily a good thing. )

Some ways of doing things here are for the better I believe, but I was annoyed with the "Wait and see " approach my old doc had. I have no idea what will happen now, who I'll be turned over to. We did start going to a fertility place and were in the middle of all our testing when I got a BFP (I think HSG cleaned me out a little.) Anywho.....I digress.

@TheSwissWifeStyle: It's a type of lettuce that is very popular in Switzerland, I am sure you've seen it!

I moved away in November of last year, but I spent 4 years living there. I was surprised at how hands off my OB was during pregnancy. Totally different attitude compared to American OBs.

@lindseykaye: eeep! I just found this chart:

Perrier is one of the worst! :( Crap. I'm stopping now and making the switch to a safer one! Who knew!?

You're abroad, right? Docs in Switzerland are really lax, my doctor only advised me not to eat nusslisalat. Everything else was fair game.

I drank TONS of sparkling water while I was pregnant, too. It was a tasty and quick way to stay hydrated and helped me drink a lot more water than I would have otherwise.

I will say that 18mg/L of nitrates is kind of high for drinking water (anything under 50 mg/L is potable but the lower the better obviously). See if you can switch brands - San Pellegrino only has 2.9 mg/L nitrates to offer a comparison.

I drank a ton of Perrier, couldn't go for flat water at all. And I'm a vegetarian mama, too. :)
When in doubt, ask your doctor/midwife. My practice always told me feta cheese was fine even though the internet would tell you otherwise. And they laughed about the soft serve thing, too.

I drink perrier every time I go out to a restaurant! I don't want to order soda and can't drink alcohol - so sparkling water it is!

I don't know if it's okay to only drink perrier and no water, but I will say taht I am dying of thirst for regular water after a few glasses of perrier.

Yup, I drink tons of sparkling water. I'm trying to stay away from soda while pregnant unless I can't avoid it so I drink massive amounts of seltzer and water now. No calories, no sugar, no caffeine :).

I drank tons of sparkling water in the beginning. Never gave a second thought to it. Flat water was icky

The grapefruit flavor was my favorite!

So, since I got my BFP a few weeks ago, I've really been on a Perrier kick.

DH has been very cute since the BFP, making sure I'm taking the best care of myself that I can. Sending me links for Vegan/Vegetarian Pregnancy books, Pre-natal Yoga, and lists of what I should and should not be eating. I love him for this. Both of us are very scared of another MC.

So while I was glugging away on yet another liter of Perrier last night, DH asked me 2 questions that I don't know the answers to. I've tried good ol' Dr. Google, but the results are somewhat inconclusive. So if anyone can help me:

1. Is it ok if the only water I'm drinking is sparkling water? Do I need to drink regular water too?

2. Is Perrier safe to drink while pregnant?
It didn't even occur to me that it wouldn't be safe, but when I googled it, I came across one thing where someone said it had too much (many?) nitrates in it, and that can cause birth defects!

My first doctor's appointment isn't until April 23, which is a lifetime away!! So if you have any insight, please share!
