Its not an app, but I'm a huge fan of MommaStrong.com - its $2 a month and they have prenatal work outs (as well as programs for postpartum).

I don't have apps specifically for prenatal exercise, but there are some that I'm using for exercise during this pregnant time.

I am a fan of the runtastic series of apps since I'm into running. They have a pedometer app and also a squats app that seem pertinent for maintaining prenatal fitness. Both are fun, but you have to pay a bit to unlock all the features.

I'm halfway through my second trimester, and finding myself in an exercise slump. I need to step it up and be in better shape, but I don't wanna do anything that's not appropriate for the pregnant body.

Anyone have any favorite prenatal exercise apps? I see a few yoga-related ones, which are fine, but I'm also looking for cardio and/or muscle building/toning exercises.

@CC Mommy: I've only had 2 appts so far, and they've both been with the same doc whom I like. She's not available for the next one, so I'll be seen by someone else. I'm going to try my best to have her see me at my appts, but I'm really only available one day of the week, so I know sometimes it just won't work out.

These docs and I share the same employer, so we are actually colleagues. I guess this gives me more sympathy to the various docs and also less pressure because I feel confident in making some value judgments on my own. There are just a few that I definitely don't want to see because of what I've seen behind the scenes.

The hospital where I delivered uses the "laborist' model- the doctor on call delivers you, period, so unless you schedule a C with YOUR doctor, you have no way of necessarily getting them. The practice my doc is in, plus one other, share the duties (all female doctors). They don't have you rotate doctors for visits because many that could be on call aren't even in your practice. The doc who did my C was in the other practice, and she was still amazing. And it was her, and her colleagues, who came to check me daily in the hospital, and I had never met any of them (my doctor stopped by to say hi/meet DS, but not to formally examine me.)

Also, since it's a large teaching hospital, the times I went to OB triage (for weird pains and then early labor), I just saw the resident on call, never one of the doctors.

@summerfruit: @Littlebit7: Update, I do not like rotating through doctors. It has been incredibly stressful and confusing. I have one doctor who is afraid of everything and answered all of my questions according to her fears, one who practically brushed all of my questions off with the roll of his eyes and approved everything and then a midwife who kept telling me to reference the book that they gave me at the beginning, but then turned around and told me to stop drinking caffeine (even though the very same book said 200-300 mg was fine and I only drink a maximum of 75mg... a shot of espresso or a cup of black tea).

Now, I am confused and trying to average out these three experiences. Definitely decided to make my next appointment with my first OB GYN, I really liked her and she knew her stuff (even though she was very restrictive).

How has your experience been, @summerfruit

With my first, I went to a larger practice and they started rotating doctors around 5 months. I was fine with it. In the end, the doctor who delivered my baby was someone I had never seen, but it didn't bother me at all. With my 2nd, I only had one OB in a private practice but because my L&D went so quickly (45 minutes!), the hospital midwife delivered my baby and my OB walked into the room 10 minutes after the birth!

I saw a large practice with both midwives and doctors. I chose a midwife birth early on, so I saw mostly the midwives for appointments, but I rotated through the different midwives. I also met some of the doctors, so in the event I would need a c-section I would have been comfortable with them. I was really glad I rotated through the midwives, because I was in labor for 48 hours, so I cycled through three of them between labor, delivery, and postpartum. I really liked the chance to meet them all, and I really thought they each brought different strengths to my care. Wouldn't change a thing!

There was a similar practice at the OB office with my first. I met most doctors but never met the one who ended up delivering my son, but honestly, it didn't matter - I spent 99% of me labor with an amazing nurse and liked the OB when she came in. Same thing with my daughter and a new OB office - I saw the same OB every time, but at the hospital you had a random doctor (of OBs from the same practice but who only worked at the hospital). I didn't like that doctor much but it was fine - the nurse who helped me was amazing. Anyway I liked having the consistency of seeing my own OB every appointment (or sometimes the same nurse practitioner) but if I had the choice I would cycle through (like with my first) and hope you would know the doctor who ends up delivering your baby (even if it's just a little).

I love my ob and went to the same practice for both pregnancies. She's part of a small-ish group: there are 4 doctors and 1 midwife, and at least 1 of them is always on call. Patients mostly see one doctor, but starting near the end rotate in order to meet everyone since your ob may not be on call when you go into labor. With lo1, my ob was on call when I was admitted, but I had a 36 hour labor and so was delivered by the midwife who was on call for the second half of that time. For lo2, I had a scheduled induction and my ob was with me the whole time (save a few hours at the beginning when I was being admitted).

I loved it because I definitely had a personal relationship with my doctor and very much trusted her and felt she knew my preferences, but also felt comfortable with the other people who I may have been delivered by (and the midwife who delivered lo1 was outstanding!).

I have a close friend who delivered at the same hospital but via a different practice; she had a single ob who wasn't on-call during her delivery so she was delivered by someone she'd never met. She wasn't happy with her birth experience--she ending up having a c-section and felt like it might have turned out differently if it had been her own ob, who didn't even check in on her for awhile during her recovery.

My practice has 10 doctors that deliver, you see your doctor until the third trimester (unless they are out) at which point they have you rotate through the ones that are scheduled to be at the hospital around your due date.

My practice always has at least one of their doctors at the hospital. They each take a week at a time for daytime hours and then have a rotating night and weekend schedule. Of course I went early so I hadn't met the ones who were covering the hospital when I delivered.

My OB practice has 6 doctors that deliver, and 2 NPs that see OB patients, too. They rotate us through for appointments, and like for us to see everyone at least once, so a total stranger won't be delivering your baby. I have a primary OB/GYN, and she ended up being the one who delivered my first, by luck of the calendar. I have really liked everyone I've met, though there are 3 new providers since I had DS. I meet the first new one at my next appointment in October. I'm hoping I'll like the new ones as much as everyone else I've seen!

Same practice for both pregnancies, but different experiences. For my first, I rotated through the midwives until I was forced to see one of the physicians because of higher risks. Then I saw that particular physician for the rest of my pregnancy. It was then an entirely DIFFERENT midwife that I had never met that delivered me.

For my second pregnancy, I just saw the same midwife throughout my whole pregnancy. She wanted me to see a physician at least once at the end, but I ended up going into labor before that appointment. :P It was again, a different midwife that I hadn't met before who delivered me.

@Littlebit7: We must have used the same practice, and I had a similar experience with mostly uneventful pregnancies and disliking 2/6. Of course, with LO1, the one I disliked the most came on call 50 minutes before I finished pushing her out. Luckily, he was only there for the very end and the stitching--although he did manage to piss me off during just those few minutes. =)

eta: the 2nd time, I had my daughter so fast, none of the OBs in my practice had time to get there, even though the office is like 1/4 of a mile away. So the random on call OB in the maternity ward helped, and he was AMAZING. So amazing that I would recommend him to anyone I know, except he doesn't have a practice.

My OB office has 6 OBs and a midwife. I only saw my OB throughout both my pregnancies and the on call doctor delivered both times.

I agree with a few others, the nurses provide most of the support during labor. I only saw the doctor at the very end. With my first I pushed for 3 hours, mostly with just the nurses. OB came in at the 2.5 hour mark to give me some options as I was getting too exhausted.

With my second the on call OB didn't even make it in time because things happened so fast. Luckily the hospitalist was able to rush in and deliver the baby. The OB made it in time to deliver the placenta and stitch me up.

This is pretty interesting to see how different everyone's experiences are! For me, I have a big HMO that has a hospital 10 min away from me in the next city, but I go to their offices in my smaller town. At the office in my town, none or maybe one of the OBs actually deliver at the hospital. I could conceivably go to the offices at the actual hospital, and possibly have an OB that delivers, but the chance of him/her being on call when I go into labor is so slim that I just stick with the convenience of the smaller offices! I did switch to a new doc this time, because I didn't love my OB from my first pregnancy (same deal in the office). You end up seeing them quite a lot and since I had complications with my first, I wanted to make sure I liked and trusted her! As for delivery, its just totally luck of the draw! And yes nursing care is such a huge part of your labor and delivery experience.

I saw one OB regularly until about week 34, then they had me rotate through the other 4 OBs in the practice so I could meet them first in case they were on call for delivery. I loved my OB and was dreading having a "stranger" on the big day. Of course that's what ended up happening, but the OB who delivered my son was ah-mazing as was the nursing staff. Everything worked out despite all my worrying  Congrats, and good luck!

@CC Mommy: so I had no idea how everything worked with my first. And I'm certainly not an expert now. But this go round, I'm going to ask that the nurses take baby to the nursery for a few hours in the middle of the night on the first or second night. That sounds awful, but with my first, I had her at 930 pm, didn't get to our room until midnight and then of course zero sleep since your delirious and full of adrenaline. Next night we were both SO exhausted and the nurses didn't offer the nursery so I wished I had asked. A tech came to take her for her hearing test overnight and took pity on us and "kept her a little longer". I was SO exhausted from labor and no sleep for two days straight that I was a mess when I got home. Now heading home to a toddler this to round, I want to try to arrive home ready to go.
I wished I had asked for more support learning to breastfeed. The LC was available but rushed since it was a quasi holiday. The nurses have some knowledge of this, so I wish I would have asked for more help, in hindsight. Or at least asked for more visits from the LC
Also there was one nurse who just wasn't pleasant. She was probably "old guard" and was brusque and hurried. I'm easy going. She stressed even me out. I should have asked the nurse manager to have her switched on the second day.

Oh and congrats by the way! The prenatal visits can be overwhelming (no matter what setting you are in). Try to stay off dr google if you can. And ask any question you want (and write down the answers)...don't hold back! That might help you to feel more control of the situation

Hi! Thanks for sharing your experience, this is my first pregnancy (15 weeks) and I was very emotional when I found out that this was how my O.B. office worked. So far, I have seen 2 doctors and honestly there are things I appreciate about both of them and things that made me feel slighted from both of them. Still not 100% sure about how I would like to proceed, but I am thankful that one noticed I needed thyroid supplements and the other noticed we needed to keep an eye on something else. It's just that I feel that some of my concerns have been glossed over by both of them. I have an appointment with a 3rd person (a midwife) for my next visit (we will be going over test results and performing an ultrasound) and I have some particular questions for her and also some particular fears related to seeing yet another practitioner--plus, this is the first time I am seeing a midwife and I know nothing about them.

@Littlebit7: How do you voice preferences about nursing staff?

I've done both. My first was at a practice but I mostly stuck with one OB but have seen someone else. Actually, she out right said she most likely won't be available for my birth, and I was okay with that. So I saw her until the end and someone else that I never met before delivered. I trusted all the nurses/doctors there so it was all good.

For my 2nd I went to a one woman office and she delivered and it was good too! I admit it was nice to see a familiar face!

My OB office doesn't do this as an official policy but my first pregnancy I saw a couple different OBs, midwives and NPs too. This was just for convenience in scheduling appointments. I wasn't concerned with who I was going to see in labor and it ended up being a midwife and an OB (c-sec) that I didn't know. This time I am trying to stick with the same OB and midwife bc I didn't like feeling that no one in the office really knew me. I'm assuming it will the same in the hospital that it will likely be someone random for deliver but I'm ok with that.

For baby #1 they had me stick with one OB through the second trimester, then rotate through until 37 weeks, then back to your primary. The upside is I realized that I strongly disliked many of the doctors and switched when my OB moved. I had an OB I never met for the delivery and it didn't go well. That's part of the reason I switched, but in a normal labor you'll barely see the OB

This baby I am rotating through the midwives. I like having a personal relationship, but honestly I schedule around convenience

I'm rotating through a team of 9 midwives, and there is no way of knowing who will attend the birth. However, I can already tell that the midwives have been in communication with each other about me, and it gives me confidence to know that they all know who i am, even if I don't see one of them in particular. They do give the option not to rotate through, but I think I'd rather get to know them all a little then just meet someone when I am in labor.

My practice has 8 gyns but only 4 deliver babies, so I rotate between the 4 of them. I don't mind and with EMR I feel like they do a pretty good job of at least glancing at your chart before coming the the room. Obviously if you have a scheduled c-section you can pick which doctor performs it and if you have a scheduled induction you might get a shot at picking the doctor who at least starts it.

with my first, i had a large practice of 5 OBs and i rotated through all because it was whoever was on call OR could be whatever OB was at the hospital if it was "after hours" or on the weekend. so i wasn't super attached to any of my OBs knowing that it could be a total stranger. the hospital i delivered at was known for being very natural birth friendly though, so it was most important that i deliver there. i got lucky and my fave OB was on shift when i delivered. even then, she was only there for 15-30 minutes of the whole delivery!

my second, i had an solo practice OB and honestly, it was annoying. appointments took forever because he didn't have any coverage when he was delivering until the end of my pregnancy, where i regularly saw his backup (which i didn't mind!). so he delivered my second, but then he didn't even see me for the 6 week check, which i thought was really annoying.

for the third, the highly recommended OB here (i will have delivered in 3 different cities!) is also a solo practice, but does have a NP. so i'm hoping for routine checks, i can just see her. i'm not sold on having only one doc because i really think it's about the nursing staff and the hospital and have picked my doctors based on where i wanted to deliver.
