I started taking prenatals 3 months before we started TTC. I'm still taking them now, and we're still waiting :(.
But just like last time I will take them all through pregnancy (whenever that happens) and as often as I remember during nursing.)

Yes took them while TTC, pregnant and nursing. Studies have shown taking them in advance of becoming pregnant help decrease risk of spinal cord defects and also has been linked to decreased risk of autism (obviously these are correlations and not causation).

I took them for a few months before we started TTC, then all through pregnancy and nursing. When I stopped nursing and we were taking a break from TTC, I still took a half dose daily just in case (which ended up for the best since it got pregnant by accident). Hopefully my body had built up enough from before.

I took them all through TTC & have continued through bf'ing. It has seemed worth it to ensure I had plenty of folic acid & all other vit/minerals on board throughout the entire process.

You could use this time to find the prenatal vitamins you like before dealing with morning sickness, etc, since some people say their prenatal makes them nauseated. Good luck with TTC! :goodluck:

When I told my OB that we were trying this month and I had just started prenatals she said that's great but ideally I would take them for 3-6 months before TTC. So I definitely think it's best to continue taking them daily until you get pregnant!

I took folic acid for about 6 months before ttc. Then Prenatals through 6 months of ttc, an early miscarriage, more ttc, my pregnancy, and 9 months so far of breastfeeding. I don't plan to stop taking them before we ttc again. So many Prenatals.

My doctor told me it is not necessary to take the prenatal before becoming pregnant, however it IS necessary to be taking folic acid. She wanted me to be on folic acid for 3 months, ideally, before even TTC.

I started off just on folic acid, but I have been taking the prenatal now because I wanted to see if it had any side effects before becoming pregnant. My doctor told me that if the prenatal made me nauseous or constipated to stop taking it and switch to just folic acid. They have been fine though.

Do you ladies take prenatal vitamins during your entire cycle or only during the TWW? AF came today and I impulsively took one this morning but then thought maybe it wasn't necessary. Does taking a vitamin all month help boost your folic acid levels in general? Or does it only really matter when you've potentially got a bean in the burrito?

@Rainbow Sprinkles: Which ones do you take?

I think what I will end up doing is taking the vitafusion prenatals, and then when I actually do get pregnant, find out from my doctor if she'd rather me switch to something with iron, or take a supplement.

I mostly want to get in the habit of taking a vitamin too, but I feel that if I start taking the prenatals then I'll just be ready once things start to happen for us!

I initially took the gummies, but found them to get expensive really quickly. I switched to a normal vitamin (Rainbow Light) and split the pills in half and always took with food. I then switched to NatureMade since their pills are smaller in size.

I took the Nature Made prenatals because it's one soft gel pull a day and that was WAY easier to swallow than the hard pills. It has iron so I would take the gummy calcium fiber prenatal chews at a separate time of day to help absorption and that worked really well for most of my pregnancy after my awful MS passed. My doctor did say if my MS was bad I could just take a folic acid until 20 weeks because prenatals were for my health and not baby - baby was gonna suck whatever it needed from me anyway!

I took gummy prenatals and did not supplement at first. I ended up being iron deficient and eventually had to add iron supplements (but that is very common).

I don't think adults need to drink milk every day. I haven't had a glass of milk in years and there's research coming out now that indicates that we just don't need it. Just find your calcium in other places, like veggies and seafood.
