Ya know, I thought it was pretty odd that I got a phone call from a person at Makena yesterday, whose job it was to make sure insurance covers patients. I guess that's a pretty important job if they are charging that much for the medication. Insane!

My doctor actually ordered them from a compounding pharmacy. I paid for them bc it wasn't on the approved list but it was $12 a shot- like $60 for a vial that did 5 shots. My do thought it was criminal that it would be like 800-1000 per shot and constantly complained about ridiculous healthcare costs so he did his bests to keep costs down where he could.

@pinkb: I've been taking daily progesterone suppositories since the end of June, and all I had to pay was my prescription copay. Not sure if it would've been different had I needed the shots, but I was under the impression that my insurance would cover all treatments that were recommended by my doctor. Good Luck!

I'm on Makena (and my insurance practically begged me to go on it) but when my OB first discussed it with me she said all of her patients who want it but get denied just go through a compounding pharmacy, any of which, presumably, could ship to you. After all, my insurance ships Makena to me. I'd be surprised if your location really mattered.

@Mrs. Lion: I am in Florida. I read that online about the compounding pharmacy, I wasn't able to find one near me, but I would be willing to drive to get it cheaper! I am definitely going to look into any option available if they get denied again! Yes $80 is way better :)

@pinkb: where do you live? I just thought about it and my out of pocket may have been cheaper because my first 4 weeks are actually not makena. My ob sent me to a compounding pharmacy close by who apparantly makes the meds in house. Maybe thats why mine was cheaper? Maybe you could check and see if you have one of those near you? If you have to pay out of pocket 80/month is a whole lot more reasonable.

@MarieJ: That is what DH said today when we found out, way cheaper than NICU time. I would think it would even be cheaper than the 4 day hospital stay I had for preterm labor.

My Dr. office made it sound like they are having a really hard time with the appeal so I am just worried about the outcome. I had preterm labor at 32 weeks, no known cause. I was able to keep her in until 36 weeks with bedrest and medication. I just don't see that there is any other option for injectable progesterone so it has me worried. I called Makena Care Connection today and they offered the first dose for free so we have more time work with UNC. I am suppose to start them on the 1st.
@Mrs. Lion: everything I read online seemed affordable, but I guess it was outdated. I found information that since they made this synthetic progesterone an "orphan drug" this company kind of has a monopoly on the market.

That is insane! I just got a call from someone at makena and mine should hopefully be covered 100%, but there was a mix up yesterday when i got my first one and i had to pay out of pocket with no insurance...and it was only $80 for 4 weeks worth! I dont understand why yours was so expensive!

I have similar situation to @MarieJ, my son was born at 34 weeks. I currently have no issues with cervix or preterm labor.

I get them due to my water breaking with LO#1 @ 34w3d. I've been receiving them weekly since 19 weeks of this pregnancy. My insurance didn't make a fuss & covered them. I am on a 90/10 plan so I pay 10% which equals out to about $400 for the entire course of shots. My insurance rep says they barely get denied because they would rather pay for the injections rather than a NICU stay. I hope they accept your claim.

If you had to have them later in pregnancy to help prevent preterm labor, did your insurance cover them? Was it denied at first? If they were not covered what was the cost?

I was prescribed Makena and so far United Healthcare has denied them. My Dr. office is appealing it and we are hoping to get an approval next week. But in the mean time I have called UHC and the cost to me would be $4000 per month! That is not even an option for us to be able to afford. I read online why it is so expensive and it is infuriating.

I had preterm labor with Chloe. I delivered her at 39 weeks, though.

I don't have more frequent appointments, but they do take everything very seriously and don't brush off any concerns I have. I have to call for any amount of spotting, regardless of color, and be seen (it was my first sign of labor with Chloe, and I dilated to 1cm at 23 weeks). I've bled a lot this pregnancy, have had two ER trips and have been on pelvic rest (with modified bedrest in there, too). Each non-routine appointment earns me a pelvic exam and cervical check.

They also remind me at every appointment to remain hydrated. Dehydration made contractions start the summer I was pregnant.

I had twins at 27 weeks. One had severe IUGR and was born at only 12 ounces. Yes, 3/4 of a pound. The other was born at 2lb 1oz. The bigger baby spent 101 days in the NICU. He's perfectly healthy now. Unfortunately our smaller baby died at 5 months old; he developed a heart condition that's incredibly rare, with no treatment.

My coworker had her baby at 26 or 28 weeks. After 3 months in NICU, she finally put on enough weight to go home, just in time for Easter. My coworker was due a month before me, so when she came back (after the birth and before starting maternity leave when she could take the baby home) she would say "Hey, you've now made it further than I did!"

My SIL gave birth to her first son via emergency c-section at 30 weeks. I'm not completely clear on all the details, but I know she had pre-e + a blood incompatibility problem.

Have you read Half Baked by Alexa Stevenson? You can read a bunch of her experience on her blog, Flotsam, too (http://flotsamblog.com/). But I think her little girl Simone was born at 27 weeks? It is a really outstanding read- she explains so much about the NICU just in the course of her story. I devoured it when my son was in the NICU.

My small sir was born at 34 wks, 4 days per my obgyn's calc, I would say it was closer to 34 wks even based on my charting. He stayed in the NICU for 10 days, my story is much like @krsmall in that my water broke and we headed to the hospital. He was 5 lbs 12 oz and had no problems with breathing, etc, but my hospital had a rule that any baby under 35 weeks went straight to the NICU. Because he had no problems the nurses kept saying that he could prob go home with me, and then the doctors said no way on their rounds on Day2. I was crushed. Later someone explained to me that you should expect that the baby will stay in the NICU until you would have been at least 37 weeks gestation, maybe until your actual due date. Wish someone had explained that to me at the beginning!

I don't have any first hand stories.....but know two incredible people that were preemies (micro preemies?).

First is BIL who is now 30 years old. He was born at 26w, two months NICU time (back then!) and was valedictorian of his undergrad class, and dentistry graduate studies class and is now a hugely successful dentist, nothing "wrong" with him because of preemie, he is perfectly normal!

Another is a friend's daughter born at 25w. Three months in three different NICU's. She is 7 now and aside from "small" (though adorable!) her Mom is petite so it could just be a product of that, she just seems a little small for her age! Friend said that at school she just had to remind her teachers to treat her like a Fall baby instead of a Spring/Summer baby in some scenarios, but she said each year that seems to be less and less important.

I don't know if this is even useful, but healthcare and science are pretty incredible! I hope your LO stays in and cooks as long as possible, and hope you stay well as well, thinking about you!!!

I had a nephew born at 31w in May and he just turned 4 months old on the 24th, you already wouldn't know he is a premmie :)
