My son is almost 3 now and he isn't diagnosed reflux (diagnosed as an infant but stopped meds at 6 months old). He does definitely still reflux especially when he gets ahold of soy for sure and other times as necessary.

Weight gain is finally great. He doesn't seem to be in pain but he has a VERY high pain threshold. Symptoms are coughing alot when not sick and randomly vomiting (reflux) but with no sickness. He also wants to drink constantly when his stomach is like that.

@Mrs Green Grass: Based on your bump, do you want to edit the title? More reflux moms of younger babies might click on it if they know it's not just aimed at toddlers. Just a thought since I almost didn't open this because my boys are only on the verge of toddler-dom.

I'll jump in even though I think we're on the tail end of it.

1. Elliot & Finn
2. Off meds now - were on Zantac for a month, then Prevacid for 6 months. We weaned off of it about 3 months ago.
3. Issues/Symptoms: Finn has never been a great eater since the reflux really kicked in at about 4-5 weeks. He fights bottles constantly and it has been a huge, stressful battle for most of his life to get enough food in him. Thankfully, he likes and does well on solids, so I do feel more relaxed now than I did when he was only/primarily on bottles. This is totally speculation, but I blame the reflux for his bottle hate. When he was first born, even though he was the smaller one at 4 pounds, he ate ferociously regardless of whether I was BFing or bottle feeding. It took me a couple weeks to figure out the reflux might be a medical problem (I just thought they were spit-up prone babies and that something about my BFing wasn't working because they would pull off and scream and scream), and ever since then, even when the reflux was pretty well controlled by the Prevacid, we've had issues with him eating bottles. As for Elliot, his reflux was milder than Finn's but seems to be lingering longer. We weaned him off Prevacid at the same time as Finn, but he projectile vomits his bottles more often. It is often the bedtime bottle, but I'm not sure if it's from reflux or if it's from drainage from allergies. Thankfully, neither of them seem to be in pain anymore when they eat. Weight gain is going okay; both boys are at least on the growth chart now. Other symptoms that I have no idea if they are related to reflux or the allergies: runny nose, sinus/respiratory infections, and poor sleep.

If anyone read this that is switching from Zantac to Prevacid, in the spirit of fair warning, that was TERRIBLE and we eventually started giving a tiny bit of Zantac also to help with the acid battle transition. Those 8 days were hands down the hardest of our whole reflux dealings. Also, there's a pretty good group on Babycenter that I found a lot of helpful posts about the medicines and what they do/how they work/etc. if anyone is interested.

Anyone else out there still dealing with reflux? Based on what I've heard, most reflux in babies clears up by 6 months or so and that the worst cases often clear by about 18 months.

D is exactly 12 month adjusted today (today was his due date, but he was born in October). He's been on Prevacid since before he was term and our current dose is 4mg daily, 2 in the morning, 2 in the evening.

Recently he's been throwing up in the middle of the night and he also frequently throws up his bedtime bottle. Google has sent me various places including worrying about a brain tumor, but I think it's probably the reflux.

I found this list of symptoms on ask.com:

*Abdominal pain above the belly button
*Chest pain
*Burning sensation in the esophagus
*Extreme pickiness about foods or refusing food
*Eating only a few bites despite hunger
*Gagging or choking
*Poor weight gain or weight loss
*Bad breath
*Constantly runny nose
*Frequent sore throat
*Sinus infections
*Respiratory problems (such as bronchitis, wheezing, asthma)
*Nighttime cough
*Nagging dry cough
*Hoarseness
*Poor sleep, frequent waking
*Frequent ear infections and/or ear congestion
*Excessive salivation or drooling
*Intolerant of pressure on the stomach

So I'm curious how reflux looks for your lo and what med/dosage lo is on:

1. Lo's Name and Age
2. Medication and Dosage
3. Reflux-related issues you are dealing with.

Thanks all. I guess my trepidation comes from thinking it was low-supply for so long and not being entirely sure what is the root of our issues. I was hoping for a slam-dunk diagnosis and not having one makes me uneasy. I guess we'll give it a shot for a few weeks and keep our fingers crossed for improvement.

ETA: we're seeing the ped again in a month and then if no improvement a gi specialist from there.

@Ellie: Reflux is at its worst from 4-6 months, so it makes sense that your LO is showing some improvement. I would definitely continue with the meds, and also follow up with a Ped GI Specialist.

@NovBaby1112: Zantac is such a crappy med to give for Reflux because it is so weight dependent . . . and babies are constantly gaining weight, especially in the early months!

I think even your lo's refusal of formula sounds like reflux.

My lo has been on Prevacid forever (he's about a year) and it's fantastic. My lo refused the boob and bottle and did a lot of arching of his back when he was very little. Now that we are eating lots more solids, he's having some more frequent symptoms in the evening. But overall, he eats much better than he did at first.

Tons of people take prevacid! Also if it is reflux, not taking it can actually do more harm because the acid can damage the gi system.

My lo also needed thickened feeds when helped to prevent the milk from coming back up. I've been dealing with this forever, so please feel free to ask me anything!

I had strong suspicions my LO had silent reflux when she was about 2-3 weeks old, so her doc put her on Zantac which seemed to help slightly. It didnt make a HUGE difference, but it made a slight difference, so not sure if it was worth it. The thing is, ALL of her symptoms of silent reflux were SO similar to oversupply issues, colic/gas, tongue tie/lip tie, food intolerance...that it was hard to know exactly what was causing it. By 3ish months though we took her off the zantac and she was fine.

What made me start thinking silent reflux with my lo were a few things. She did that silent spit up thing that you mentioned, and then would swallow it. She could not sleep on her back and would have that reflux a number of times a night if placed on her back. She also had a lot of mucus and sounded very congested when she would breastfeed. A consultant pediatric pulmonologist I spoke to said that the nasal passages producing mucus is its way of protecting the nostrils when the acid comes up and hits the back of the nose.
Those were the clues for me. Hope this helps.

Give the prevacid 2 weeks at normal doses to see if it work, this is what our doctor told us was enough time to see if it is effective.

Our daughter's reflux was awful (diagnosed by an upper scan) & this helped her be more comfortable & relaxed. To me my child being pain free and comfortable outweighs my dislike for medication & I will do anything to make her life better quality.

How did you know that your LO had reflux issues? What was it that made you look into it or convince you of it?

If you have a minute or ten to read this, I could use any and all insight:

My LO is a week shy from 6 months. She's had sleeping and eating issues since day one and I've attributed most of that to having a low supply (I EBF not by choice, but because LO refuses formula - we used to combo-feed until she weaned herself off of the formula) and to her being sensitive, I guess.

She cries on the boob and often seems upset or frustrated. This usually happens within 3 seconds to 3 minutes of feeding. I then switch boobs and she seems happy for a second, then gets upset. I switch back. Repeat repeat repeat. This is our normal feeding behaviour. If I hand express or pump at this time, barely anything more than a drop or two comes out - hence my feeling that it's low supply. But she's overall a good weight and is gaining, so she must be getting something.

As for sleeping, if she makes it to 2 hours I consider it a blessing. She doesn't cry when put on her back, she just wakes up after about 1h45min and cries. I usually nurse her back to sleep, but sometimes rocking will do the trick. She sleeps in a dark room with white noise, after a bedtime routine, etc etc..

She doesn't throw/spit up too much, at most once a day. But she does do the 'silent' spit ups that you can't see because she swallows them. I don't know how many in a day, but I've tried to watch her closely and she perhaps does 2 or 3 of these a day.

Anyway, we finally got into see a pediatrician (there are only 2 in my town and the waiting list to see one is nearly 2 months) and I suggested that it may be silent reflux. The doc agreed and gave us a prescription for prevacid.

But here's the thing: that night, 10 minutes after giving my LO her 1st dose of prevacid (which she took like a champ), I had this horrible gut feeling that she should'nt be taking it. I suddenly feel like silent reflux isn't to blame and I don't want to overmedicate when it isn't necessary. When I made the appointment 2 months ago, her crying at the boob was near-constant, but she was also overtired and fighting her naps and her bedtime a lot. Since then, it's gotten less worse and less dramatic and it feels like it's improving, slowly.

I am practically delirious from lack of sleep and I don't know what to do about this whole thing. It doesn't seem obvious or clear-cut as to the cause of her upsets and lack of sleep. Should I just give her the prevacid and see if I see improvement? I'm not usually anti-medication, so this is unlike me. Should I just wait it out some more, since babies often outgrow reflux? Otherwise she's a happy baby.
