We have a private school that we like to know more about (that goes all the way from preschool till high school!), and have signed up for a school tour this coming Wednesday for their preschool to grade 4 facilities. I am not sure if we may actually switch school next year, the year after, or kindergarten at the moment. What questions should I be asking on Wednesday? Any advice? I just read about an amazing sounding all girls middle school (private) where we live now, though we'll almost certainly be moving in the next year or so. We specifically bought a house in a good school district for this reason. The only private school in our town is a Catholic school and we would never send our kids there because we are not religious. Also, because unfortunately this particular school has done a lot of hateful things in our community. If we stay where we are now, I will join a homeschool co-op, then private school from middle school onward. If we move to a different area (which we expect) she will go to public school all the way. But if that doesn't work out by the time our future kids are school age, we would definitely go with private until we could move. </p> <p>But to your point about admissions, I'm not sure that you would necessarily have a huge amount of trouble if you don't switch to a preschool now. My elementary school was one of the best in the city, after 6th grade about a third of my classmates went to private school. My brother also attended my elementary, but my parents put him in private school in 3rd grade. Later he attended a public school magnet program.</p> <p>Some public school pre-k programs are half day. Hire someone to take your child to daycare. Could be a high school student, nanny of a friend etc. </p> <p>Pick the school or program that works best for your child. You are lucky to be able to include private schools in the mix. If the school system doesn't benefit ds, then I'll either homeschool or find a private school in the area for him and LO. He's a real smarty pants, so I'm not sure if a low rating school would be ok for him, or if he would get bored there.</p> <p>We do have some sort of option of area to move to, but it has to be within an acceptable area of dh's warehouse, cause of the cost of gas and time. We have one of the notoriously worst city school districts in the nation - seriously. There have been national news specials on it. The county school district was fine, but now they've consolidated. We are taking a little bit of a wait and see approach, but if the schools don't improve we will be doing private or moving out of the county.
