Nursing under a cover (we used the Dria) was like the ultimate challenge. So, I just nurse without one! I nursed a lot in the car, and eventually just out in public. One thing that really helped was my blessed nest nursing pillow- I cannot recommend it enough- we still use it at 12 months. I wear the panache sophie... but yeah, not exactly the kind of support I would love to find at our size!

When she was little in the beginning I had to lay her on the pillow and hold my breast (kind of like a cross cradle hold). I also did a lot of football holds, but that seems (like it might be) tricky in public.

If you want to use a cover, I would recommend the bebe au lait one I got from BRU. It has a wire around the top so it hangs around baby and I can look down and see him to help with latch, etc.

Until T was 2.5 months I took the Boppy everywhere and used it. Once he got some head control we could ditch it. I find that reclining a lot while feeding (without a pillow) helps. At home it's nice in my recliner but out in public I really gotta push myself backward to line everything up right.

I use a cover but I'm still pretty sure I flashed everyone a couple of times last time I nursed in public. Lol. Just gotta do what you gotta do.

@mrsrain: I ended up EPing because I had crazy low supply. I would pump for 6+ hours and only get 12 ounces on a good day, down to 4 ounces when I gave up at 5 months. BUT, I think I know why my supply was so low (severely limited my calories to try to lose weight asap - not so smart) so I'm giving it another chance this time! I started EPing at 4 weeks, and it wasn't too difficult. It was definitely easier at work (and I'd have been doing it anyway), but pumping at home required some assistance. I don't know how it would work once your baby gets mobile, because I quit at 5 months when she would still stay where I left her. DH was available to help with her about 75% of the time, but there were times when I had to pump and care for her, so I'd put her in the exersaucer, bouncer, tummy time, laying on the sofa next to me, etc. She was a really easy-going baby, so it wasn't too hard to pump and keep her happy. Oh, and you can set your baby laying down on the boppy next to you with a bottle propped up on pillows while you pump - killing two birds with one stone!
I didn't hate pumping necessarily, but I did hate it since my output was soooo low and I wasn't getting much for my effort - that was discouraging!

@swurlygurl: I live down the street from a Kohl's-- I will have to see if they have any that will fit! Side note: I would be interested in hearing more about your transition to EPing. It is something I have played around with. LO lost too much weight early on, so I had to supplement while waiting on my milk to come in. I pump almost exclusively for night feedings, and sometimes think I should just switch over entirely... but I am worried about the logistics of it.

@mrsrain: I have some obscenely large chest size (like, at least J+, I've given up trying to measure them), and Kohl's actually has some perfect bras!! They're just normal underwire bras, but no padding or much structure so I was just able to pull it down when needed. And really affordable!! As for nursing in public... I don't know that I can ever do it. I had to use one hand to keep my boob from smothering her, and then another one to hold her/keep the cover actually covering her but out of her face so she didn't swat it away. And then when she did swat it there is just SO MUCH white fleshy boob exposed, that it's super obvious even when only flashed for a split second. I ended up giving up trying, and eventually was EPing so it wasn't an issue anymore. I'm hoping I'll be more confident to try it with #2!

ETA: I think it's this one: http://www.kohls.com/product/prd-1731735/lilyette-bra-plunge-into-comfort-minimizer-bra-904-womens.jsp Definitely NOT very sexy, but the DDD size actually fits. I would totally recommend trying it on in the store! And if I'm remembering correctly, it was something like 2 for $35 on one of their constantly rotating sales.

Wow, thanks for the continuing suggestions!

@Pumuckl: When my family was visiting I attempted to nurse in the living room under and A&A blanket. What a disaster! I finally gave up and passed her to Dh so he could give her a bottle. Even that was tricky-- That blanket seemed determined to flash my breast to the whole room.

@My Only Sunshine: I have considered doing this. I actually wear an old underwire bra at night (more comfortable for sleeping in), and I just kinda pop my breast out to nurse when I am wearing it. unfortunately most stores do not carry my size, so not only would I have to order them online, they run much more expensive in general. If only my old bras fit better!

I've always used a cover because I feel really exposed even if I do the two layer, one up one down, technique. Lately, I've switched from nursing bras to mostly wearing regular bras that are stretchy enough to pull to the side to nurse. I've had a hard time finding nursing bras that were supportive enough, and Target has some great inexpensive regular bras. As long as they're unpadded (no thank you!) and unlined, they're plenty stretchy enough and they seem to do a better job of keeping everything in place.

I tried nursing under an A & A blanket but usually my LO would only fuss so I just did what I had to do. I got used to it and once we had the latch and positioning down and nursing wasn't taking 45min anymore I got a lot easier and was done within 5-10 min or so. I often nursed in more secluded spots and often in the car. I never got one weird coment about BF in public.

And I also liked the two shirt trick the others have posted about. But sometimes it was just too warm for that so then I was more exposed but I didn't mind. That attitude grew slowly on me though :) In the very early days when I knew we were going to need to feed out and about and nursing would be difficult I'd often bring a bottle of pumped milk.

I can't give great recommendations on nursing bras, but I can say this: I used a SPORT nursing bra instead of a regular one and found it to be SO much more comfortable and supportive. I bought three and with my two kids I basically wore those things out!!

As for nursing in public, taking the boppy (or whatever nursing pillow you have) with you is a great tip. I constantly struggled to roll up jackets, blankets, etc. to support baby because I needed two hands to nurse: one to hold the boob / push back top of boob so it didn't block baby's nose, and the other to hold baby's head in position. Both my kids were kickers so I couldn't use a nursing cover without flashing someone, so my husband would just stand in front of me holding up a blanket or REALLY large nursing cover. We rarely nursed in public because of this. I did a lot of nursing in the backseat of our car! (tinted windows!)

I second Elomi bras- I could never get enough support in a Bravado. Also, we did the football hold FOREVER. I also did the tank top underneath whatever I was wearing so that I could pull my shirt up- always so jealous of mamas who can nurse just by pulling their shirt down. Impossible for big boobs! I also think that the more you nurse in public, the easier it gets, and the more comfortable you get. I'm still bf at 23 months but we don't do it in public any more as DD is way too acrobatic and I can't stay covered at all. Good luck!!

Have you tried nursing in the ergo/Moby? One of my big busted friends swears by this and tells me it's easy because she has more breast to maneuver around (ie she can get it to where it needs to be for baby to latch). I've not figured out nursing in the carrier but it seems really convenient/private.

If you live near a good bra shop they can convert any bra into a nursing bra. They also sell the little clips that let you convert them yourself (you cut the strap and then add the clips. Some people say not to wear underwire while nursing, but I always feel more comfortable in underwire bras and used the whole year I nursed. nursing tank or bra under button down is also helpful. I hated the nursing covers and would not use them. You will figure out what is comfortable for you in public.

I love my Elomi 5D bra. Nordstrom carries them and has free shipping. As for nursing, I usually tried to find somewhere private - nursing rooms at baby stores or the mall, or even the backseat of my car. Sitting in the car with tinted windows is way better than trying to deal with a cover, IMO. And it will get better and easier!

Thanks for the recs, ladies! I am going to check out the bra that several of you mentioned. We took LO out on Saturday to do some shopping and eat out at a restaurant for the first time. Before we went into the mall I sat in the car and nursed her for the first time in public. It was an experience! Then I ended up picking up a nursing cover while we were in Buy Buy Baby. I think I will start practicing in the house with the cover (and maybe the diaper bag) to get more comfortable with it for next time.

I wore a 34 H/I postpartum, and I second the Bravado Bliss nursing bra. Not as supportive as my pre-pregnancy bras, but my favorite nursing option. I also loved Glamourmom's full bust long tanks. If you can, try and find a place where you can try them on though. It makes such a difference at our size!

As for public nursing and positions, first, I promise it gets better with time! Second, until DD was 6-8 weeks, I could only really nurse her in the football hold. My LC suggested the laid back position, but I just couldn't get her nose clear of my boobs when she couldn't lift her own head. At home, I used pillows. In public, I sat the diaper bag next to me and laid her on top of it for support. It was winter, so I used a pashmina scarf over us both (or just the A&A from my diaper bag). Like others, I wore a tank I could pull down while I lifted my top shirt. Once she got bigger (and her mouth got bigger), we found cradle perfectly comfortable.

Finally, I don't know whether it'll be the case for you, but my chest eventually settled down to a size smaller than pre-pregnancy!

I loved my Bravado bras and tanks. Is there a close near you that specializes in fittings for nursing moms? There was another brand that I also tried that was quite supportive but I can't remember the name. Getting fitted at a local store specializing in nursing related things was life changing for me! I nursed in public all the time, it got easier after 6 weeks or so. I wore a cover the "Booby Trapper" or something like that...it was nice and big so I never worried about exposing myself. I eventually did drop the cover though cause I always wore a tank and lose shirt and that provided enough coverage. If you need some extra support maybe use your diaper bag and blanket to lay her on top?

I recommend Bravado Bliss nursing bras. As far an nursing in public goes, wear a regular top with a nursing tank (target nursing tanks in XL worked for me). Shirt goes up, tank goes down, very little is exposed and nothing's visible once baby is latched.

I'd sit sideways in a chair with the boppy between the back of the chair and me and kick my feet up on the diaper bag.

Hello ladies,

I am in need of some advice/tips. My LO is 3 weeks old today and I am getting to the point where I would like to be able to get out of the house. That said...

I have large breasts. They were big before, and now they are a massive 38J. I am struggling with nursing bras that are way less supportive than I am used to, and I can't seem to figure out a way to nurse my daughter around others that doesn't involve baring my entire breast to the world.

I really, really hope that somebody will be able to share some tips for anyone that sells a more supportive nursing bra for larger cup sizes, positions that might make public nursing easier, or other ideas for making public nursing a possibility for us.
