I have been through a very similar situation and it’s so stressful and emotionally draining. I too had a wonky cycle while trying for number 2. It was super short like yours, and the bleeding was not normal. A month or so later, I had some stomach pain that woke me in the middle of the night. It was excruciating, but it passed after a few hours, and I felt fine the next day. A week later (at this point I was unknowingly 9 weeks pregnant) I had a sense I was indeed pregnant, so I took a hpt. It was positive, so I went in for betas.

My HCG was high, like 1,500, but my progesterone was 0.2. I immediately thought it was likely an ectopic given the circumstances, so I asked my fertility specialist for an ultrasound. The ultrasound showed blood flow to my right tube. I opted for surgery over the methotrexate.

I had laparoscopic surgery to remove the pregnancy and my tube, but when my doctor went in, he saw that the pregnancy wasn’t actually in my right tube, but on my right ovary, which is pretty rare. He removed it. Luckily, my tube and ovary were both saved. I fell pregnant with twins 4 months later.

It was an exhausting ordeal, but once I had the surgery, I felt a sense of relief. The unknown is so hard. I hope you get some answers soon. I’m really sorry you are going through this. I’m also happy to answer any questions you might have.

One other thing that I will add that I was unprepared for once I had a successful pregnancy is that an ectopic pregnancy (or any pregnancy that doesn’t end in live birth) will be noted in your chart as an abortion. So when you go in the future for the happy ultrasounds and you walk into the room and all your info is on the screen it will say that you’ve had an abortion. Which sucks and was hugely triggering for me because, like you, I deeply wanted each of my pregnancies.

Hi, I’m so sorry you’re going through this it’s so stressful... I’ve had two ectopics (which is extremely rare). These betas are very similar to my ectopic pregnancies—rising 50-90% in 48 hours. It’s unlikely that they will be able to positively identify the ectopic pregnancy. It happened with one of mine, but I was told it almost never does.

If your HCG keeps going up and there’s nothing visible in your uterus, they may want to do an in office procedure that’s like a d&c but not called a d&c because of how early it is and check that for embryonic tissue just to confirm that there’s nothing growing there. Or at least that’s what my doctor does to confirm an ectopic pregnancy since they rarely show up on ultrasound. Even if it’s confirmed that way it will stay ‘unknown location’ because they know where it isn’t but not where it is. The procedure is quick but does hurt. You might be offered another round of methotrexate or your doctor might recommend surgery. I did three rounds of methotrexate with my first ectopic pregnancy and I will tell you the side effects get worse with each dose. Surgery is really the only way to know where the embryo is growing, so it might help you in that sense but I was told it’s rare to keep the tube/ovary because of the damage the surgery causes.

Good luck, and if you have any other questions I will do my best to answer them 💜

I’m so sorry you’ve been through all this. I don’t have ectopic experience myself (hopefully someone will chime in who does!) but IF is hard enough on its own, not to mention adding all this back and forth. Hoping all resolves soon and you can have some peace

I’ve been on a rollercoaster the last week. I haven’t posted since my now almost five year old was born but figured I would check out these boards again ❤️

We are on an 18 month journey to have another child. We were set to start IUI in January. Monday 12/21 I went in for a hysteroscopy/
Polypectomy. As I was being wheeled into OR, surgery canceled due to positive HCG (I had a cycle start 12/16 and end 12/20, weird for me to be that short but I’ve been stressed). Went to fertility center for a beta.. came back as 71, progesterone 0.7 ish. Diagnosed as a chemical pregnancy. Went back two days later (12/23).. beta 252.4, progesterone still at 0.7 ish. Diagnosed as probably ectopic. Went 12/24 for another beta and ultrasound.. beta at 410.1, progesterone 0.93. Started having left side pain a few hours later. Consulted with my doctor and was told based on labs and ultrasound to do methotrexate. Got methotrexate 12/24. Went back today for repeat labs and ultrasound.. beta up to 1260, progesterone 4.02, increasing tenderness / sharp pains on lower left side into lower back. Ultrasound repeated, no obvious intrauterine pregnancy noted but a slight indication of “something” in uterus. Was sent down to MFM.. had a very long abdominal and TV ultrasound done by a tech and doctor.. large cyst noted on right ovary, a slight shadow of “something” in uterus, not believed to be a viable pregnancy, if pregnancy at all. Nothing significant aside from the right sided cyst noted elsewhere. The plan is to go again Wednesday for repeat labs, which should be going down at that point. I’m exhausted and frustrated. I’m told if this is intrauterine then it’s a “highly abnormal pregnancy”. Right now I’m deemed “pregnancy of unknown location”. I feel I really need this location identified so I can find peace. This has been such a wild ride.
