Our doesn't get too gross. We also compost, so it cuts down on food in the trash so we haven't had any issues with smell. I also take the plastic tubs out and wipe out the cabinet once every couple of months. It's mostly crumbs. </p> <p>Our cabinet doors are still on the hinges, so we have to open the cabinet door and then slide out the trash can. I keep cleaning supplies in it. I think it would get icky awfully fast, especially since we don't have a/c and the summers can get hot. I love it. And it has this removable rim thing that gets gross. (Goes on top of the can to hold the bag down in place.) And inevitably, stuff falls out of the trash can, onto the "floor" I guess, of the cabinet that it's housed in. We have a separate compost, so we don't have much food waste in the actual trash can, so I suppose that helps. It really just irritates me more than anything. But I make DH deal with it all, lol!</p> <p>I also kind of feel like whatever smells there are, get trapped in the cabinet, and then when you open it they all rush out at you at once. Growing up, (and at my parents house now) we had/have a traditional stand alone trash can, and I never feel like it smells or anything. Of course that could be because my dad takes the trash out about every other day. Here, our bags are something crazy like 2.50 per bag (it's a "trash tax") so DH tries to cram at LEAST a week's worth of trash into one bag. I have to ask him for like, 3 days in a row before he'll take it out. I'm considering getting a pull out trash can built-in to replace the trash compactor so we would get slightly more space in our kitchen. Do you like yours? I'm afraid the built-in will get a bit gross and muggy in there and be hard to clean!! What do you think? </p>
