I'm potty training my daughter right now. We tried pull-ups for a day, but she thought of them as diapers too. My daycare is super accommodating and doesn't have rules about potty training. During naps, they put her underwear on under a diaper. That way she can still feel when she is wet, but there isn't a risk of a mess. Would your daycare be open to having your son wear actual underwear under his pull-up and do that for the 2 weeks period without accidents?

A while back, a friend of mine said her daycare wouldn't allow the little potty either, but it's literally all her son would go on and they basically reached an impasse with potty training over it. She ended up talking it over with their daycare more and they agreed to try a travel potty (like this one: https://www.amazon.com/Cool-Gear-Travel-Potty/dp/B002RAYVKG) for a little while - it turns out some of their resistance to the little potty was over the cleanup, and they agreed that since this used bags that could just get thrown out, it helped . No idea if that's even an option where you are, but thought I'd toss it out in case it sparks another idea!

Have you read the book, "Oh Crap?" She specifically addresses this issue in one of her chapters. I guess I'm lucky that my daughter's daycare just requires underwear, and if they have 3 accidents in a day they get put in a pull-up. One thing I have noticed is that my daughter is more likely to have accidents when she is wearing underwear. Her first day of daycare was accident free, but she's had two days so far that she had an accident. Last Saturday my husband put her in leggings and underwear, and she had an accident, so we took off the underwear and just put the leggings on her and she did fine. If it seems like my daughter is regressing we just go back to the basics. She has a history of tramatic pooping due to constipation, and she had an accident in her pants one day. Now when it gets obvious she is going to poop (she pops on and off the potty several times) we put her in a dress with no underwear, and it worked!

As far as your son goes, I would get the book if you haven't read it yet. It may not work, but you don't have much to lose. If your son is having accidents on the weekends take off the underwear but still leave him fully clothed. If he is still having accidents then take off his pants or shorts so he is half-naked. Each layer of fabric feels more and more like a diaper to them, so they are more prone to accidents.

What kind of toilet do they have at daycare? In my daughter's room they have a small mini toilet, but also have the portable potty chairs. My daughter is okay with the mini toilet, but still won't use the big potty at home. I bought something like this for home use: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CJRTJ4S/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I'm hoping that helps her. We haven't set it up yet. It's kind of hard to go out in public with her because she won't use a big potty. I bought a travel toilet insert for her to sit on but she won't use that either.

I don't know why your daycare won't allow a little potty. It might be worth considering changing daycare because this is a very important life skill for young kids. Also, I totally recommend the book, "Oh Crap." It helped us a lot :)

@peachykeen: I hadn't thought of cloth trainers. I'll look into them, thanks for the brand recommendations! He vastly prefers boxers though so they may not go over well (facepalm) but I'm trying everything at this point...

Will they let you use cloth trainers? That could help separate the diaper/pullup thing. We were lucky in that our daycare didn't require a specific time period with no accidents (that seems untenable for that age!) and we used Gerber training pants successfully, but your daycare may prefer true trainers like Super Undies or Grovia.

Daycare has an understandable policy that a child must have two weeks in a pullup without accidents before they can wear underwear. Not a problem, right?

Except now my 4 year old believes pull ups are just nicer diapers. He refuses to use the toilet at daycare (and has for two months now). We did boot camp over the holidays and he was totally potty trained at home. After two months of trying to switch to underwear when we get home and on the weekends it has become clear he is regressing. He had three accidents this last week because he just forgot he wasn't in pullups like he is ALL DAY at daycare.

I can't take two whole weeks off of work to give him two weeks without accidents, the pullups clearly aren't working and daycare won't let us bring in a little potty for him that he is willing to use.

Any ideas? His little sister is almost 2 so I'm wondering if she's trained if that will get his butt in gear, but I don't think he actually cares that much.
