Now that ds turned one earlier this month, I am in the process of pump weaning. I hope to continue BFing at wake up and bedtime for however long it is mutually agreeable. However, I work late Wednesday nights and don't get home until after bedtime. Will I need to pump every Wednesday or will my body figure it out?

@abmamma: i don't remember perfectly but I think I was only pumping once a day when I started dropping time. I never pumped at home in the morning - I did it at the office right when I arrived - and I know that I stopped pumping at work before I was able to stop at home....so it must have been evenings only by that time

@abmamma: oh my gosh, I can't believe this was practically a year ago!
I used Kodybear and AmandaB8 recommendations to reduce time every few days, and took Sudafed during that time. It worked great! Oddly, taking just 1 Sudafed killed my supply for a full week a few months prior (I panicked!)but I don't think it helped it all while I was actually trying to wean.
I'd say it took a solid 2-3 weeks before I was certain it was over. The first week I was finally "done" I had to do super short pumping sessions every 3 days for relief. Then, the next 2 weeks I was anxious but fine.
Good luck and congrats!!

We just gradually replaced bottles with snacks. I think he was doing bottles at 7, 11, 3 and 7. We introduced small meals for lunch and dinner, and when we really ramped up dinner he was never hungry for his 7pm bottle, and our ped was fine with cutting it out. So for a while he got a bottle at 11, lunch at 12, and bottle at 3. We then replaced the 3pm bottle with a small snack, and a week or 2 later, the 11am bottle with a small snack as well.

The last to go was the morning bottle, because it was just so convenient for me. I used to get DS up and put him in the PnP with a bottle while I got ready, and then we'd leave. It was more of a hassle to have to feed him a real breakfast, so I put that bottle off the longest.

@petitenoisette: my girl is doing 3 four ounce bottles so I think I could def drop one of those in a month or two and just pump once a day to have enough for her.

She is actually doing really great with solids which is surprising to me! My first was never big on them - he much preferred to nurse!

@littlebittyhouse: 2 four ounce bottles. If I weren't going on break soon what I would probably do would be to just cut down to the one bottle before her nap (she's down to just one a day) and then reduce the amount of that bottle gradually and then cut it out entirely.

How is your LO doing on solids? Mine was really slow on solids and wasn't until a few weeks ago that she would regularly eat enough so that's part of it too.

I like the idea of dropping from 3 bottles to 2. Do you mind me asking how many ounces she was taking?

I would rather not do WCM to be honest...

@littlebittyhouse: Wow, props to you for pumping that long the first time!! My LO also can't have WCM (yet, hoping she'll outgrow it soon enough) so I'm still pumping once a day at 15 months. We dropped from 3 to 2 bottles a day when she was about 13 months old. One day her DC teacher asked me if I wanted to send her breakfast because she had been having a bottle when all the other kids ate real food! Oops. Anyway, when we went to two bottles I dropped down to just one pumped unceremoniously and I'm usually able to pump enough then for each day's bottles in the one pump and I supplement with my stash as necessary. I'm going to be on summer break soon and so hope to gradually day wean over the summer (as it is she often only nurses once during the day before her nap on the weekend).

At the very least I think you could easily go down to just 2 bottles before naps; I'm not much help with the rest since I have no experience switching to WCM!

@PawPrints: yes! Should have noted that I don't plan on giving up actual ounces per day until after a year! Just planning ha ha I pumped for my first until he was 2 (he had a milk allergy) so I'm a little antsy to get rid of the pump this go around.

That sounds like it was a really nice transition!

I waited until after LO had turned 1 before I started to taper down her daycare bottles. Since babies can't have cow milk before 12 months you really want them to be getting the full amount of breastmilk up to that point. I did drop my third pump around 11 months though, since I was still producing a lot from just those two pumping sessions and also I had a large freezer stash to dip into. Then once LO was 13 months or so I started to taper down to two bottles at daycare, and dropped to just one pump. Then a week or two later I stopped pumping entirely and gave LO one more week of one bottle per day from my freezer stash, then cut the last bottle. That gradual transition allowed time for her daycare teachers to start pushing the cow milk so she was used to consuming plenty of that before the bottles went away. She was still pretty angry for a few days after we dropped the final bottle, but she made it through that transition fine. Now we breastfeed morning and evening and on weekends and that's it, no pumping. She is 14 months.

My little will be one next month and I'm looking for some guidance about pump weaning and feeding schedules!

She is still taking 3 bottles a day while I am at work 9/12/3 and then we nurse while we are together another 3(ish) times and then on the weekends on demand.

I pump 2 or 3 times while I'm at work.

Should I start to space out her feedings? Tie them to her naps at 10 and 2 with lunch in the middle? I usually nurse her at about 6am and then again when I get home at about 5:30.

Would love to hear what others have done!

I had a crazy oversupply - at 2 ppd I was still making 50+ oz.

I dropped time on both pumps. 5 minutes for a few days, then 5 minutes more for a few days, etc. Once I got down to only making 6 oz or so a day, I stopped. I also cut calories, oatmeal, and beer to help stop production. It also helped me to not gain when I weaned!

I will warn you - you will be engorged around day 10. It will feel awful. Hand express a little, and after day 14 or so without pumping you should be good to go.

Also - you'll get crazy hormonal...you'll be angry and sad and happy all at the same time. It's normal. It too goes away around 14 days post pump. You just have to battle through (and warn everyone!)

@MrsLonghorn: I EPd and when I was down to 2 pumps, I dropped the morning pump first because I couldn't sleep at night if my boobs hurt too much. The first few days, I carried around a hand pump in case I was super uncomfortably engorged and would pump out a quick oz. I think I stayed at 1 pump for two weeks, until my boobs weren't engorged and then I went on a girls' trip and just took the hand pump to express an oz or 2 before bed. By the end of the trip, I didn't feel like I had to pump anymore!

Randomly a week after I stopped pumping entirely, I got a plugged duct and had to pump it out--i pumped just once, emptied the boob (about 3-4 oz) and never had to pump ever again.

My supply was so much lower than yours that I doubt our experiences were similar. I'd prob just wait a few days before dropping again. You might need to go a different amount apart, like instead of 12 hours, move to 15 or 20, so you aren't totally uncomfortable.

That's amazing that you are at 11 months!!

I EPed for 6 months, then I got a nasty bout of the flu which killed my supply. I decided to wean and just slowly started dropping one pump a week until I was at 2. By then I was barely making anything so after a week or so at 2x a day I just went cold turkey and didn't have any problems

i eped for both kids and at the end, i just dropped the last two sessions together. normally i would pump 20 min/session. when i wanted to wean i decreased the time to 15 min for a couple days, then 10 min for a couple days, etc. once my output got low enough i just dropped them both. i was engorged for a couple days but then was fine.

I EP and it is finally time to pump wean -- woohoo!! DS is 11 months, and I have a massive freezer stash. I have spent the last 11 months battling countless plugged ducts, and still have oversupply, so I'm more than a little nervous about this process.

I dropped to 2 pumping sessions (7a and 7p) 5 days ago, and after about 3 days, I'm no longer crazy engorged at night. I'm also down from ~35-40oz of output to ~20, which is definitely moving in the right direction! But I'm not sure where to go from here. This is the first time I've dropped a pump session and not gotten plugged ducts the next day.

Right now, I'm using this website for guidance on how to go from 2 -> 1 -> 0, but I'd love any personal experience or advice from this group! http://exclusivepumping.com/weaning-from-the-pump/

Which session should I drop next -- am or pm?
Has anyone successfully used Sudafed to help with pump weaning?
