We tried it, but it didn't work so well when he was teeny tiny. I needed to support him a lot more to get a good latch.

I do the cradle hold, but once he's latched I lean pretty far back in my recliner, so I kind of end up like that, except still holding him across my chest, so I can still use my boppy! It seems to help him not choke on the milk

I feel like my breast would suffocate her. I have issues with side lying because of my breast size. I have to hold my breast back so it doesn't cover her nose. I stick to traditional holds.

I can now that Sawyer is older, but as a newborn he would have suffocated on my boob (I have H cups boobs) I suspect it is better for smaller busted mommies. I also have very flat (borderline) inverted nipples, so I had to be more active in getting him latched.

i'm still brand new at this (LO is 1 week old), but i find that football hold works best for us. she hates laying on her side, so the cradle/cross-cradle doesn't work and this reclining position only worked once or twice because her neck control isn't strong enough and she gets all frustrated if we can't get a latch right away because her little face gets smushed.

We sort of morph into that position sometimes now that she moves all over the place. I feel like we're a circus team nursing at all angles anymore, she's rolling around and flopping all over, then looking for the boob again!

I agree, football was the best for me when she was brand new. I also found that because I'm left handed, I hold her in football for my left side, and cross cradle for my right side so that my left hand is the one supporting her most of the time.

I use this position a lot because of a forceful letdown. I've only dozed off in that position once during the first weeks of feeding in the middle of the night.

Mrs. Bee, that's the reason I don't do side lying for night feeds!

The laid back position for me was SO good for me when I was having trouble breastfeeding. It was the only way I could get her to latch on when it didn't hurt. I usually only did it on the couch, thus during the day.

I read what Mrs. Bee said and honestly, I never had a problem being tired when feeding M. It wasn't easy for me, so I stayed wide awake when feeding her. No chance of falling asleep. Now that she's older, we do the lying down in bed feedings overnight and that is amazing and YES I worry about falling asleep in that position!

I did this a lot in the beginning. She had problems latching on in the beginning plus my forceful letdown led us to this position. The first time she latched successfully on her own was with this position.

@Mrs. Tricycle: i would just be cautious when they're little babies and can't move their necks. i fall asleep in the glider with olive almost every single morning and have been doing so for a while! i don't worry though since she's older. and i need to get more sleep so i don't pass out while nursing her all the time.

I did that when my letdown was too forceful. I have a friend that used that position because her babe was taking SO long to eat. Once she started using it, he drastically reduced his feeding time and started gaining weight like a champ.

When I was pregnant and read about this I was like 'oh yea, that's what I'll do'. But then I had a jaundice baby who had a hard time having the energy to eat, so I had to do traditional stuff.

But THEN a month or so into it I ended up having a really forceful letdown and baby was choking and gagging and so we did the recline/ nursing uphill to help with that.

Now that he's older (6 months) he can handle the force and only nurses for a short time, so it's just easier to do a quick traditional-hold feed, and side-laying for twilight when I'm tired and baby is having trouble sleeping.

So it's good to know lots of stuff and you'll use different positions for different reasons! :)

Yes, but it didn't work well for us until he was a few months old. I think he had to suck harder and didn't like it until he got bigger. Now I mainly do side-laying and cradle (9 months).

We nurse like this ALOT b/c I had oversupply & still have overactive letdown issues. Leaning back helps keep my milk from coming out so crazy so DD can keep up easier.

It's pretty much either laying back or side lying.

I do in the glider when she starts to look sleepy and wants to lay on my stomach. It helps her sleep since shes a tummy sleeper. We didn't really use it until she was around five months old. We had lots of latch probs and I was afraid to try anything new until we really got everything down. Since I didn't use this position until much later, I can't really address whether it would have helped in the beginning.

So I'm reading my first breastfeeding book, and it talks a LOT about the benefits of using a reclined nursing position - see photos below -- especially in the beginning. I guess it allows for a deeper latch, gravity helps maintain position, baby feels pressure on tummy and thighs which triggers desire to nurse, etc.

I never thought of nursing this way -- it's not the traditional cradle hold that I have always associated with BF-ing and using a boppy.

Did you use a reclined position? Is it as amazing as my book suggests?
