@peaches1038: she was on Zantac. It was the first thing prescribed to her. She was EBF. There were a couple nights in a row where we weren't home for dinner/in a rush the next the morning and I kept forgetting to give her the medicine. When I realized that her symptoms hadn't come back, I decided to hold off for a few more days and she's been fine ever since. She does still spit up randomly sometimes (maybe twice a month) and occasionally has bad breath (maybe once every month or two) which makes me think that it's still a small struggle for her but since she is completely happy all the time, I don't really feel as though she needs meds. I just do my best to not feed her many acidic foods or over feed her.

@Mrs. Sunshine: thank you so much for responding! Did you have to try different meds before finding one that worked? Which ones did she take if you don't mind sharing? Was she breastfed? How did you know when she didn't need meds anymore? Sorry for so many questions, I'm just so glad to have someone to share their experiences with me.

My LO didn't get diagnosed until after we started solids (6.5 months) looking back she had always had mild symptoms but it didn't becone wildly apparent until later. She is also a seemingly very happy kid and never had trouble gaining. She was on meds for about 3 months before it finally phased out. She still has a few symptoms sometimes (14 months) but not really anything that indicates the need for daily prescription meds anymore. I know how hard it is to feel as though you're baby has been suffering for so long with no relief but it's okay. He's growing well and is happy. You're searching for the answers to his needs and you're doing an awesome job. I'm glad you're going to see a doctor that will take your concerns seriously.

DS is 7 months old and had trouble with coughing and choking while nursing, spitting up, arching his back and chronic wheezing and congestion, which significantly worsened after he was diagnosed with rsv and bronchiolitis at 3 months old. For the past several months, he has been on nebulizer breathing treatments and Zyrtec with marginal improvement. Wheezing is pretty much gone, but he still coughs and sputters while nursing, spits up, arches his back, etc. our pediatrician said that those other symptoms are due to my overactive letdown and possibly allergies/asthma. I made an appointment with a pediatric pulmonologist who thinks its reflux. We have a swallow study scheduled for tomorrow to rule out any anatomical abnormalities and then we will move forward with treatment. Im wondering if anyone else has experienced a reflux diagnosis with an older infant and am looking for any tips, med recommendations or advice. I feel terrible that he's been suffering for this long and I didn't really know. He's generally a very happy baby and has always gained weight well so our ped never really took it seriously (we've since switched practices)

thanks everyone it is so hard to deal with!

the oddest parts of this saga are that he hardly ever spits up, is very happy and didn't exhibit any issues prior

poor sweet babies have to go through so much! hugs to you and your families for dealing with it all

My LO had severe reflux and was on Prevacid u til about 18 months. Definitely avoid lots of jostling after eating as well as feeding too much...our worst phase was right around a year. So much puke! Also avoid in feeding while moving.

My Lo was diagnosed with silent reflux when he was around 2 months. We got him on Zantac and I eliminated dairy and nuts from my diet. That seemed to help immensely. We weaned him at 7 months and he's been doing great ever since. I have added most dairy back in (no milk or cream) but haven't added back in peanuts or peanut butter as we think that was the main issue. I keep meaning to do an at home "allergy test" with peanut butter but haven't gotten around to it.

I'm sorry - LO2 was 6 weeks early and spent 4 weeks in the NICU, in part because she would reflux and it would cause her to stop breathing and her heart rate would drop dangerously low. I get how scary it is. We ending up using an AR formula (alone and combined with breast milk) and Zantac. She outgrew the painful part just recently at 6 months but she still spits up a ton.

My 4 month old spits up so much! It started recently. I wonder if it's a sign she has reflux. She also likes to stick her fingers in her mouth, not just the thumb but a few fingers at a time so not sure if it's causing the spit up.

I'm so sorry your going through this. My LO 5mo was diagnosed at 4weeks with reflux the Zantac did nothing for us, and after a week was switched to Nexium. The 6 days it took for the Nexium to kick in was the worst 6 days of my life! He screamed for 12 hours every day. After that though he still spits up there's just no acid in it to burn his throat. We're going to attemp to wean him at 6 months, and if it's still bothering him the ped says well go two more months.

so glad he's doing better, but it must have been so scary to go through all that trauma and testing. i don't have similar experience, but a child of a friend got really bad reflux around 5 years old--the specialist they saw said that sometimes reflux can flare up during a growth spurt because the digestive system is changing. so hopefully this is just a phase for your LO (whatever the reason).

so our little man has been diagnosed at 10 months with severe reflux, previously no problems.
he began to have episodes where he appeared to be choking/ not breathing/turning blue
after 8 million tests he's on zantac, zyrtec, sensitive and no spitup formula which has helped dramatically
I can honestly say this has been the worst few weeks of my life and I've never been so scared.
has anyone had any similar experiences? did your kiddo grow out of it?

DS1 was a big mess of spit up until 8 or 9 months. He still spit up occasionally until around his first birthday. He was a happy spitter, so he wasn't on meds; we just had a ton of laundry! Sounds like this is a common pattern.

I did notice some improvement when he started crawling, maybe because his core was stronger? I hope this happens for your LO!

@charlotte: ugh, I'm sorry :( I was so worried for awhile. I knew she had to be uncomfortable. And it was so frustrating when I would head out the door and spit up would cover both of our outfits from shoulder to shoes. The furniture stains were awful too!! It would get all over her crib, her nursery rug, the baby gates, and there were always big spit up puddles all over the floor. I wish I could've made it better for her.

My youngest spat up A LOT and it didn't slow down until 11-12 months. Her ped wasn't worried but I think her weight reflected how much she spat up (she wasn't even on the charts at 12 months for weight and by 15 months she was finally in the 3rd percentile).

So sad for her and me and our furniture and everything + I feel like it's holding her back from maximizing tummy time and practicing sitting.

Mine was a happy spitter until she was almost a year old. I think we might have taken the bibs off a little after she turned 10 months, and it completely went away by 11-12 months. She was on Zantac, Prevacid and Elecare until she was 4 months old. We decided to wean her off all of it and see how she does, and honestly, being without meds and special formula didn't seem to make a difference, she spit up regardless and didn't seem very bothered by it after 4 months or so. Maybe talk to your doc to see if you can try going without the drugs? I agree with @sweetiepie about the slow flow nipples - those were actually worse for my LO so we stuck with regular ones. It did stop eventually, though it felt like it never would.

We had a MAJOR spitter. Also Zantac and Alimentum. I want to say it slowed down around 6 months, but was still significantly more than most babies. I would say it wasn't totally gone until 9/10 months.
Also, did your ped tell you to do slow flow nipples? Mine told me NOT to do slower than he could handle because then he might be sucking harder and taking in more air - which meant more burping/spitting. Slow flow was my initial thought as well, but once she told me that we went with the appropriate speed for his age. I can't say if it helped though because we didn't do slow flow for too long. (Not a lot to compare it to).
It is so annoying while in it - laundry all the time! Rug and couch covered in spit up! I always had to carry spare clothes for myself, changed my outfit no less than 3 times a day. But now at 17 months I can barely remember it. It really does become a distant memory. xoxo

My daughter was AWFUL. At one point, we were averaging 12 bibs and 2-3 outfit changes at day care. It was just constant. I'd say it improved drastically around 7-8 months and now at 9 months it's about once or twice a day. I really didn't think it would ever get better but it did.

LO, who had reflux, still spit regularly until about 7-8 months. We weaned off Zantac around 9 mos, and she was pretty much done with spitting up around then, and completely done by 1 year.
