Like @Smurfette: said, I think you should frame the top piece and reupholster it! That way you get to see it AND use it :)

Oh! Horsehair? That's repulsive and interesting at the same time!

Another thing you could do is just frame the top, it seems that is the piece with the most embellishment. You could also put it under a glass table top.

@looch: hahaha oh my. I've reupholstered stuff with horse hair in it, which is what I imagined would be inside this stool, although I haven't looked yet because I wanted to figure out what to do with it before I start pulling it apart!

We had one of those things in our house when I was growing up...the only thing I would be concerned about is what it is filled with, so if you really want to keep it, I'd think about removing the filling and stuffing it with something else and then sewing it up again.

Thanks so much ladies! A slip cover might work very well. I kind of wanted to keep the imprinting on the top visible, but if I do what @Smurfette: said then I think I can have the best of both worlds! Now, where would I hang something like that? ;)

@MamaMagpie: I do sew, I've reupholstered a few pieces before, but never anything like this one. It seems like a bit more of a challenge than what I've done before.

@Weagle: I think it's real leather? or maybe some sort of vinyl? It's as old as the hills really so I'm not totally sure. I've thought about taking it in somewhere and seeing what they suggest, I've just been lazy. Also, The green could work if I found the perfect place for it, but I currently have zero green in our house at all!

I've actually had someone comment at my office to take a thin piece of fabric and wet it and lay it on top with sand on it so that it re-creates the imprint, although I have no idea how well that would work either!

Thanks for all your comments ladies! Any more suggestions/ideas would be awesome. :)

I kind of love the green. Is it real leather? It looks like a fairly simple tear. Any place that can reupholster furniture or a cobbler (if it's leather) should be able to fix it.

You could make a slipcover for it! That way, you're keeping the original green intact but can make it more to your liking/decor. Pus, you can always change it out and make different ones as your tastes change. Do you sew? It looks like it would be pretty easy to make one yourself, but I don't know how to sew so I could be wrong.

If I were you, I might take the top piece and frame it. That way you have the reminder of your grandma. Then reupholster the ottoman.

Since the rip is on the seam, it shouldn't be too difficult to fix. If you don't want to reupholster it completely, maybe you could make a slipcover for it? You can change those easier to suit your taste or room.

I agree with @mrs. 64: about reupholstering it. That way you still have the piece that is special to you, but it's just modern so you can actually love it and get use out of it. You could always make it a fun print for kids to use too....

If you don't want to cover it, I think there is some type of glue you can put on that. I'm not sure if it would work the same, but my parents had leather type couches with a rip and they got some glue/solution that went on it and it fixed the hole.

Not sure if I've put this in the right place, so please move if necessary!

I have an antique foot stool that was my grandmothers. I'm not sure how old it is I just know she had it for as long as I can remember. It's kind of all I've got from her.

I'm not entirely sure what to do with it as it's a hideous green colour (but it reminds me of her and I loved her dearly) and it also has a piece that is torn.

I'd love some advice or inspiration on how to use it and/or refurbish it (even just how to fix the tear).

Or, maybe it's not salvageable and I should just let go of it. :(

Here's pics!:
