@pinkarmadillo: I purchased this tub and we love it. I got wayfair to match the total price with factoring in the free faucet offered by Kardiel, because the tub was backordered on the Kardiel website and we needed it right away for our remodel. It’s acrylic but not as lightweight as most acrylic freestanding tubs. We get so many compliments on the tub.

Has anyone purchased a freestanding tub online that they love? If so, could you give details and/or link it?

Thanks!

Same as Mrs. Yoyo. There are always some very picky people out there that always want to trash products. I look over reviews and try to see if the negatives are things that are recurring complaints and whether or not I could accept them. I also don't like to really count reviews when there's only a handful of them. 83% out of 500+ reviews seem like a really good product in my opinion!

There will always be a small and very picky minority that expects to get 10 times what they pay for a product. So take the negatives with a grain of salt unless you see the same thing over and over again (and it's a deal-breaker for you) or multiple people are bringing up a safety issue. I also put a decent amount of stock in a company's overall reputation (found Baby Bargains helpful for assessing this).

I have a love/hate relationship with online reviews. On one hand they are great to get more information on a product especially if the description is lacking, but they can also be so jaded about a product that might otherwise be fine for my needs.

How much weight do you put behind reviews when you are shopping for products that you can't physically see or touch before purchasing?

For example: while building our registry we came across what seemed like a good mattress at BRU with great reviews (5 in total) and a great price.... Today i stumbled upon the same product on Amazon with 530 reviews listed 83% were 4-5 stars but the reviews that were 1-3 stars were rather concerning (fit issues, smell, quality not consistant, etc) Do I just cross my fingers that the one we get is in the 83% of this mattress is great?

PS: my mom already ordered the mattress so i guess I'll be able to see for myself in a few days if its a keeper but i just wanted to get other thoughts

Yep, I used it big-time when building my registry. I think the 9th edition is the most recent one but they have a website you can check to make sure.

We bought it. It was helpful for some stuff, like giving us new places to look for bedding, and directing us in the right direction on mattresses and furniture. But honestly, most of the information can be found online if you like to research things. I know some people who just follow the recommendations in the book to the letter, which definitely cuts down on the uncertainty/need to research the heck out of everything!

Yes! I'm not sure I would have bought it, but a recent mom sent it to us as a gift when she found out we were expecting. Lots of it is logic and common sense, but the general ratings and things are fairly useful. Interesting to note, though, that their ratings use kind of a sliding scale: they are based on value, not purely quality, so the expectations are lower for a lower-priced item. For example, they give Ikea cribs an A-rating, because they are so cheap--and good enough, basically, whereas a much higher priced crib line would have to be much, much better to get the same A-rating. It's definitely nice to have though, when shopping at big box stores where the employees are not always super-knowledgable!

I LOVED this book. Like others have said, it is great for the big ticket items - like your stroller, car seat(s), crib, and crib mattress. It combined all of the research in ONE place (which saved me so much time) and helped me make informed decisions. Of course, I also got tips/referrals from my mama friends, but this book helped tremendously. I would definitely recommend it.

@Thehistoryofus: Even with the big ticket items, it can help you make a good purchase. For example, if she wants furniture made in the US vs China, or if she wants solid wood vs wood composite. And it's not all bargains - they go over EVERY make of things, from the $150 cribs to the $900 cribs.

I bought this book and it was totally my bible. Now that we've completed our registry, I gave it to my sister, who is 12 weeks pregnant.

A friend lent it to me - I found it really useful especially when trying to choose a brand for our Crib. I also referenced it for strollers and carseats... If you can borrow it from someone I think that would be best, or see if there is one in a library like lemonlong mentioned!

I had it, but I honestly didn't use it much. I think I looked up baby monitors and breast pumps and that's about it. It wasn't worth buying to me- I should have just checked it out from the library!

I read it, liked it and have used it a bunch. It can be overwhelming. The book pictured looks like the edition I ordered last summer. the author's website lists the latest edition and you can order it there, but it's usually cheaper on Amazon.

Thanks! I heard a lot about it. I am thinking of getting it for a friend that just told me she is 9 weeks pregnant. My only concern is that they have a lot of close family that will probably help with the bigger ticket items, so I don't know that they will be needing to find a lot of "bargains".
