I got a Sleeping Baby Productions ring sling in linen and it has been totally fine for hot weather (I'm in California so it's very warm but not humid).

http://www.sleepingbaby.net/index.php

She has some available in French twill for $45 (plus shipping).

I've been very happy with mine! It took me some time to break it in, so if you find a used one, I'd go for it. But I'm looking forward to using it with my newborn this time around!

@wheres_c: thanks for the input! That's what I'm worried about...a lot of people said it's pretty thick, and I remember being so hot during the first couple months postpartum last time, I don't want to add to it! I'm much further north than you, but our summers are still in the 80's-90's and humid.

I have the beco after not being able to justify the $$ for a sakura.
Honestly I haven't quite got the hang of it yet. The fabric is really heavy also - I'm in Texas and I think it would be too hot for our summers..

I haven't tried the beco RS but I agree with @MenagerieMama: in that a used sling is so great bc it's already broken in. I bought one new and it took foreverrrrr to break in.

I haven't tried it but got a really nice and broken in used Sakura Bloom RS on a b/s/t group for $50. Maybe try there if that's what you really want? I didn't want to deal with breaking in anyhow!

I am due with #2 this June and would like to try to babywear a lot with this baby. I had a ktan with my DS but it was a little tight and would definitely be too small now. I also didn't love it so I'm not interested in replacing it. I also have an Ergo, but will be selling it for something with better lumbar support. I like the idea of a ring sling for early on and have been looking at options.

I was looking at the Sakura Bloom after seeing lots of recommendations for it, but while looking I stumbled across a Beco ring sling for half the price ($55). I've found some reviews and a lot of people really it, especially for the price point, but several people mentioned that they disliked the weight and feel of the fabric. I'm worried it could be too hot for summer and about the possibility of skin rashes if the fabric is too rough. Has anyone here tried it? Any comments?

Not an expert at ring slings but I heard the linen blends take longer to break in. I went with a WC because I heard those can be more supportive. I bought my WCRS from LittlePeepersKeepers. I'm a fan of wovens that can be broken in with a first wash.

I have a linen single layer (Sakura Bloom classic) and loooove it. I could never really use my Ergo because it left me and DDs all sweaty messes. I rarely had an issue sweating with the ring sling on (only if it was insanely hot out or something!). It washes easily - as in, wipe clean, and never smells. I have washed maybe 4x in the entire time I've had it. IDK if that's weird but that's what the shop owner told me to do lol!

either way, love love it. It's so soft and floppy.

@Mae: @yoursilverlining: thanks for responding! I found this one, which is a linen blend. Do you think that's a good choice if i only want one wrap? I also have an ergo 360, so I can use that as well, especially when he's bigger. https://www.etsy.com/listing/244013102/linen-blend-wrap-conversion-ring-sling

So I've had two slings. The first was single layer linen. The second is a wrap conversion from Tula which is a cotton/tencel blend. The linen sling was very breathable and I'd say VERY comfortable up until about 15-16 pounds. At that point it got a bit dig-y in my shoulder and also a bit on the bottom rail under LO's legs. The wrap conversion sling felt very thick and stiff out of the box but after washing it just one time it immediately softened up and it is soooo soft and floppy now. LO is now 22 lb (19 mo) and I find it very comfortable to wear her still. This morning I wore her for about 2 hours shopping around target and the grocery store and wasn't uncomfortable at all. I did have this sling over the summer and never remember being too hot, but I don't tend to wear outside all that terribly much (because she was walking this summer, if we were outside she was running around). I'm sure it is not as breathable or cool as linen, but linen will not get you into toddlerhood. On the balance if you only want one sling, I'd go with a wrap conversion. Maybe research which wraps are supposed to be pretty cool for the summer? I feel like the tula one would be pretty good but I haven't compared to others so there may be better.

I never had a wrap conversion sling, so I can’t compare but I had a linen ring sling and several cotton ones and loved the linen one. It also held up well during all seasons of wear, wasn’t too warm in the summer for me and I used it with LO until she was 2.

You might not end up using a ring sling until your LO is a toddler though – many people have back or shoulders issues using them with babies that weigh more, like toddlers. Mine was comfortable enough, but I switched to using a tula when LO was a toddler and holy crap - - so much more comfortable than the ring sling. And my LO is a peanut too!

I tried a ring sling for the first time yesterday at my breastfeeding group and decided I MUST have one. Little did I know how many options there are! I'm trying to decide between a 100% linen sling or a wrap conversion sling. I currently have a 4 week old and am hoping to use it from now until he's a toddler. I live in Chicago, so it gets very warm in the summer and very cold in the winter. I guess I'm looking for something versatile, durable and long lasting. Which fabric do you prefer and why?

I wouldn't recommend a balboa. I won one at a baby event and ended up donating it to our babywearing international group lending library. They aren't easy to adjust and I'm not a fan of having the weakest point of the sling (the buckle) on a wearer's back. I would 1000% recommend a traditional ring sling over a pouch sling of any sort.

@ShootingStar: balboa sling isn't actually a bag sling. All "bag slings" in the US have been recalled. It's an adjustable pouch sling and is totally safe when worn properly, but there are still people who wear them incorrectly out there. The danger is in user error, not design.

Ring slings are better when bigger in my opinion. Those bag types as others said are even more dangerous for younger babies.

@ineebee: Thanks - I was only thinking of using it while he was small... but now I'm not sure.

@ShootingStar: Thanks for pointing out. I couldn't find much posted on HB about them so I figured something was up. I found these articles -
http://www.sleepingbaby.net/safety.php

It looks like it's the biggest problem is when they fall deep into the pockets, which is more likely when babies are very small... MAY be ok when bigger, but why risk it?

Sounds like I'll keep researching :) Hopefully this will help anyone else who is thinking about this brand or style of carrier!

Those slings are actually really dangerous. They're called bag slings, and can lead to asphyxiation. Baby's head can fall forward too much and cut off their airway.

I only have the Balboa ring sling and it's just okay. It works in that I don't need both arms to carry DS, and yes it's really simple to throw on and throw the baby in, but I still need to support his upper body so he doesn't fall out so its not hands-free. It's also totally different from the Ergo because baby isn't up against your body with the ring sling and it doesn't replicate being held, and so it's not great for naps. Now that DS is 5m, he only wants to stand in the sling, which is super awkward. I really wish we had gotten something else.

Has anyone used the Balboa Ring Sling: https://www.balboababy.com/product-tabs.asp?cat=1

A friend has one and she is ALWAYS wearing her baby, it looks easy enough to use. I've looked at some of the other ring sling options and this one appeals to me the most because it looks like more of a structured carrier that I can figure out how to use (some of the fabric ones look complicated). I currently have an ErgoBaby and the K'Tan and love them for their ease of use.

Anyone have any pros/cons or experiences to share with the Balboa Ring Sling?

She looks great! Can you get some of the fabric of the sling between you and her in the seat area? I try to go to the top of the diaper. That will help her sink down a little deeper and there will be less pressure on the backs of her knees, if you think it's tight there. She looks so cozy and sweet!
