My son slept in the R&P and he did not have any flat head issues. Just make sure to do plenty of tummy time and also try and rotate his head when you lay him down. For example, head right, head center, head left.

My LO was in his RNP until about 4-5 months old. He always has lots of tummy time, so no flat head that I can see.

We used the RnP and I was scared of a flat spot too, so I bought the boppy noggin nest. DD ended up sleeping in the RnP any more so we didnt need the noggin nest. You could also use it when your baby is in the crib but supervised.

We went through plagiocephaly with DS, and his physical therapist said extended periods of time in any bucket shaped baby device (e.g. infant car seat, bouncy chair, swing, etc...) can contribute to flat spots. She suggested limiting the amount of time we use those devices and counter the effect by doing lots of tummy time and holding the baby upright while s/he is awake instead of in a cradle hold.

We used the RNP for naps and nighttime sleep from 4 weeks - 4 months. No issues here, and my ped was totally fine with it. I didnt really use it for daytime use until he was taking longer naps b/c it was in his 2nd floor bedroom.

@MaybeBaby: We are still using our RnP at 5 months (LO has reflux, so the incline really helps) and haven't had any issues with flat head. Our LO naturally turns her head from one side to the other while she sleeps--if your LO doesn't, you can gently position him/her like @SorryCharlie described.

We love our RnP!

@maybebaby: it worked great for us.....he slept so well in it...BUT
Yes, he has a mild case of plagiocephely (flat head).
I don believe it was caused directly by the rnp....more so, just that he was asleep on his back for an extended period.
Dr has prescribed an hour of tummy time a day and we will re-evalute at our next appt.
We are no exclusively using the crib and only using the rnp if i need to put him down for a second

My son slept in the R&P exclusively at night until he was 16 weeks old - I didn't get worked up about the reviews about flat heads, and he doesn't have any more of a flat head than any other baby!

We've registered for and received a Rock n Play, but now I have been reading reports of extended time leaded to a flat head and other issues including the need of a helmut to discuss said issues. I imagined that we would use the Rock n Play for nap time and maybe even initially as a next to the bed sleeper. Has anyone faced this issue or had feedback from a pediatrician about how much use of the Rock n Play is safe for baby? Obviously, tummy time and lots of time outside the sleeper is planned, but I am now getting a little freaked out by some things I am reading. If you use/d the RnP, did you put something soft under baby's head to avoid such issues? Thank you for any insight you can offer a FTM!

We tried to put him down earlier for his first nap today, like Sandy said -- he DID nap for about 20 minutes just now (we're giving him another 10 minutes to try to find sleep again before we go pick him up). We also switched his background noise from the lullaby list he had been listening to for daytime naps to ultrasound white noise. (We use ocean music at night, and I always wanted to distinguish between nap noise and night noise.) He slept for about 11.5 hours in the crib last night, so that is still going well.

I hope we've turned a corner, but I guess we'll see...

Also I used the rock and play for 5-6 weeks (i think) and then stopped bc I was scared the transition was going to be tough. Hang in there :)

like rubies said, try again in one hour. nap training took us a long time for charlie not to cry at all. it was sooooooo hard when we were going through it, but sooooooooooooooooo worth it i can not tell you. pre nap training he was so exhausted he could barely play. post nap training we plopped him in his crib awake and he'd sleep 2-3 hours.

with charlie, i limited the crying to 30 min at first, and then 20 min. i was too weak. if he didn't nap, i often took him out in a stroller. but it still worked eventually!

We nap-trained and we kept at it, even though it was very hard. If LO cried for the full hour, instead of waiting until the next nap time, I tried again one hour later and it helped. I encourage you! It will get better!

We are trying to transition my 7-mo old from sleeping in the rock and play to sleeping in the crib. We've been trying all week for naps (he cries the full hour Weissbluth says to allow, but has twice fallen asleep, once at 55 minutes and once at 62 (whoops). We decided yesterday to totally take away the RNP and try at night... After 2 hours of crying he passed out and slept pretty well until 8 am.

I'm just really struggling with the napping issue... If I limit it to 60 minutes of crying, he doesn't fall asleep, which just means he gets more and more delirious as the day goes on. (Weissbluth says if he cries the whole nap to keep him up until his next nap time... But that has always been determined by when he woke up from his last nap, so I've just been letting him play until he starts to get really fussy, and then try for another nap.).

I know this is a limited time period of training, and it will hopefully go faster now that we got rid of the RNP entirely, but it's just really hard. Does anyone have any advice for sleep training? Would you just keep going for a few more days and reassess? Let him go for as long as it takes for naps?

He's outgrowing the RNP and it just isn't an option anymore. Sigh...
