@Mrs Hedgehog: DD (now 11 mths) had diarrhea for about 2 weeks early last month. DH is a doc and wasn't too concerned because she was otherwise healthy but after a week we both decided it was time to see her doctor (by this time I was having symptoms too). He took one look at her and said he was sure she was fine and it was most likely viral but did stool cultures anyway. Cultures came back negative and after about 15 days it was resolved... We made sure to keep her hydrated and avoided foods that could have exasperated her symptoms.

DH has rotovirus in med school and had severe Vomiting and diarrhea for about 36 hrs, then spent two days in bed trying to recover!

Hope it's nothing - but whatever it is wash your hands (and hers) as often as you can. This crap (pardon the pun) spreads like cray cray!

We had a really bad experience with this when she was about 11 months old (almost exactly 2 years ago!).

It usually does start with vomiting for like 24 hours, but I guess you could have probably skipped that part.

The diarrhea is unmistakable. She wasn't able to keep anything down, it would immediately come out and the smell is overwhelming. It lasts about a week and is HIGHLY contagious.

As soon as the Dr opens I am going to try to call and get an appt. I'm worried she might have rotavirus based on Dr. Googles suggestions. Nothing fits completely but that seems to fit the best. No real fever or vomiting but for three last 3 days she has had really bad newborn yellow diarrhea ( I'm talking blow outs here) at 11 months. She is extra cuddly so I know she doesn't feel well. Her diet hasn't changed and the BRAT diet isn't helping.

If it is rotavirus, what was your experience?

Rotavirus is a very scary illness. Especially in infants, it can result in hospitalization and sometimes death. Our daughter had a mild reaction to the first part of the vaccine- she had diarrhea for about a week, and was dehydrated enough at one point that we brought her in to the doctor (she was fine). Despite this reaction, we decided to give her the second part as well- because mild diarrhea and dehydration is so, so much better than the actual rotavirus.
I encourage people with concerns to talk to doctors about vaccines, not just do some Internet research. Consider asking your pediatrician what they would do for their own children. My husband spent four years in medical school, and is now completing a residency in pediatrics. Googling does not equal a medical degree. There is not a big conspiracy by the AAP or companies that make vaccines (in fact, they make such a small profit on vaccines that they have to be obligated by the government to produce them). My husband cares deeply about our daughter, would do anything to protect her and not cause her harm, and we vaccinate fully and on time.

We skipped it because after researching the diseases versus side effects, it seemed to be a "glorified flu" type of disease. Also, just as THOU said, it wasn't even all that effective so we skipped that one. I felt confident in my decision and researched both sides extensively. I'm a bit of a research enthusiast when it comes to vaccines :)

L got the Rotavirus vaccine at 2 months. The doc explained why he recommends it and the other 2 month vaccines but I can't remember what he said about that one! I remember the look on her face when she took it, though--it was the first time she drank anything other than breast milk and she was both confused and loving it.

@shopaholic: I would go to another ped to get it. Rotovirus is still pretty prevalant despite there being a vaccine and it really sucks for LO to catch it.

I will be the first to admit that I am not very "into" researching and reading all the different sides of vaccinations. It's mind-boggling and as our ped says, it's "like religion!"

DH is VERY adamant and Pro-Vaccines. All that are recommended. I definitely believe in vaccinating, though I am content with the way our ped is spreading them apart for us. I thought we were going to get our 3rd and last "2 month shot" and the Oral Rotovirus one today. TBH, I don't even know what the 3rd one is, but he didn't have it and we go back Friday for it.
Then our Ped tells me he doesn't give the Rotovirus. Something about it being a live virus and the reactions it can cause. He is a rather "hippie" "crunchy" doctor, and on the Dr. Sears recommended list. He was also referred by a couple of DH's co-workers. One took her kids to another ped for whichever vaccines ours doesn't provided. The other does selective vaccinations we think.

So... all this to ask. WWYD in our case? Would you take your LO to another ped to get the Rotovirus? If you selectively vaccinate, which ones do you skip or delay and why? I know I'm basically asking for the Cliff Notes version of vaccines. (Or if someone HAS a Cliff Notes link to this kind of stuff, I'd appreciate it!)

@zippylef: I'm so glad. For kids that are doing ok, sometimes I recommend 1 tsp of pedialyte every 5 minutes til they are tolerating it for about .5 hr without throwing up, then increase to 2 tsp then liberalize. It allows their guts time to absorb what's being given to them and breaks the ketotic cycle :)

So... it's been since last night since I've seen any really wet diapers and even yesterday, she had diarrhea every diaper so it was hard to tell if she was wet.

I've been through this twice with my youngest DD at 6 months old and just last month at 18 months old again. I pushed fluids aggressively... One doctor told me that some kids don't like pedialyte because of the sodium content/taste, so Gatorade was fine. We gave water, Gatorade and Vitamin Water because that's what she would take. I kept nursing her too. She tolerated crackers and plain rice after about one or two days and I slowly have her other foods from there.

Three wet diapers in 24 hours is the minimum... If it gets close to that, or lower, take her in!

My DD did need IV fluids the first time... I'm a nurse, but it was so completely devastating to see. I hope your baby won't get to that point.

Hope she feels better! It took my DD around 7-10 days to get completely back to normal both times :( It's hard for us caregivers too... Take care.

when DS had it we gave little amounts of pedialyte at a time because nothing was staying down. and when you start giving formula, if it's milk based i wouldn't give it 'full strength' because their stomachs are so blah. DS couldn't keep his formula down for a while after, we ended up on soy formula for 2 weeks.

We knew that my daughter needed to go to the ER when she had just woken up from a nap and was sitting with my mom and closed her eyes again. She immediately fell back asleep (even though she just woke up and went through a diaper change) and when we called her name and picked up/dropped her limbs she didn't wake up.
